@SadisticMystic "Have you ever _played_ Supaplex (whether through RnD or through other means)?"
Nope. The are about 1000 different levels in the package I got. I fooled around until I realized that all of them were just intensely boring, then I removed the installation.
And the dynamite 2 second delay to drop it? That's just annoying.
TAS must be Tape Assisted ...something. Whatever. I'm just saying it takes more than a graphics engine to make a good game. Most levels totally 100% suck.
TAS stands for tool-assisted speedrun, referring to the precision tools the program has for making tapes (and some tools that the program doesn't even have).
In terms of levels that don't suck, I've also tackled all of Snake Bite (under 57 minutes) and BD2K3 (under 85 minutes). Heck, I've improved the levelset from this video by over a minute since I recorded it. However, I can't capture RnD right now without incurring an unacceptable amount of lag, and development is all but dead.
IT's not really about impressive skills, he is replaying tapes which are recorded while you play the level, you can do quicksaves and quickloads, so the replay looks insanely impressive and close to impossible. Try RnD and see, its a great game ;)
More importantly, the game lets you construct tapes using 1-Step mode, which allows you to make sure each move is performed without delays, or with the smallest delay possible, by inputting only 1 frame (for snaps) or 8 frames (for walking between squares) at a time.
There are references to it in the changelog going back as far as 3.0.9, and that reference said that it already existed but was just broken, so it's likely that it was in place before the start of the current changelog which goes back to 2002 and 2.0.1.
The control for 1-step is non-obvious; press the far left control button during a recording (the one that becomes Eject when you're not in a level). That pauses the recording and will keep pausing after every move you make.
The last level has the player affected by gravity, so that they have no choice but to be pulled down unless they're standing on something or (for some reason) if they're climbing up through dirt. That's why I fell 3 squares instead of 2 after the first bomb explosion--I didn't even have a choice there.

The problem with this game is that so many of the levels just totally suck. They are boring and repetitive.

Hey, at least I didn't try to TAS all of Supaplex.

@SadisticMystic "Hey, at least I didn't try to TAS all of Supaplex."
That statement makes absolutely no sense to me.
