You can use aircraft paint remover to take the plastic off. Apply walk away and have a nice lunch, play a quick game and come back to wash it off. Just make sure to do this outdoors.

Ppl. he cant lose a finger the way hes doing this..his hands and tools r facing the back of the car and wheels spinning forward. Like when ur little and take the guard of a fan and let ur fingers skim across the blades. but point them the other way and they get caught and it HURTS. Hes going the right way here. If he did touch the spokes his fingers would bounce off. He is however using the file in the WRONG direction. They only cut FORWARD! probly woulda taken half the time if he did it right!

There are acids, that remove the paint, no need to "almost" lose your fingers just to polish a rim.

I was considering using this method on my SVO rims. Pretty much flat so I think my digits are safe.  Now that I see someone is as crazy as I am....I'm gonna! As with anything just use your head and you'll ne okay doing this. Jackstands and some concrete blocks will keep the car stable and unable to touch the ground just in case.

@nirsg0un I'd check the fan on the radiator, make sure it's kicking on, shouldn't have overheated. Does it get hot when setting at a light with the A/C on?

I agree with the other posters, doing this without guards and supports for your hands (like on a lathe) risks the tool getting thrown into you or getting your hands ripped off or broken if they get caught in the wheel. Car engines have a lot of torque, the wheel's not going to care if your arm is in it, it's going to keep turning.

Dude, nice job!-people got all these negative comments when they are obviously looking for a cheap way to do it themselves to. I feel like this, if you don't wanna do it this way, cool, go to a rim shop and pay for it or find another way. don't insult a guy trying to show you how to do something! I just did it to my rims and they have a 4-6 inch lip staggered and it worked. I'm sure there is a better way out there, but it does works...Obviously! the video proves that and it has worked for me!!

I have been polishing aluminum for yrs. this is a bad way of doing it. to remove the coating you need to sand blast it. sandblasting will remove the coating plus any other dirt and anything else on the rim then you can start to polish it but by hand with some nice fine grit paper. takes longer but much more safer plus he is only polishing the actual outer rim he doesn't show polishing the inside which you will have to do by hand anyway.

I think this video is informative. Pretty much tells you how to fix deep cuts and scratches on your rims that simply "polishing" wont remove. And the guy obviously knows what hes doing, just because he does it, doesnt mean you have to. He does have all his fingers...

My advice don't try this at home or anywhere else, it's very dangerous. I am a metal polisher myself but we use big polishing machines, we do Harley Davidson parts but we have an uncle that specializes in rims and I know for a fact that polishing the side of the rim only will not cost you more than a few dollars and saves you from loosing a finger or hand!!! Really check with any polishing company before trying this and get a quote might not be worth the risk! Check our vidz on jmpolishing, Thnx

OR... you could do what i do. take the rim. get a DA sander. i think i used 220 on the rough spots to get the big areas and bad spots out. then stepped to finer paper and went around the wheel. then with 1000 dry, went around because i didnt want a shined look. just brushed aluminum. then taped it off. painted the rim. took paint off and cleared everything to prevent corrosion. because aluminum likes to soak up moisture.

You are more than just good at your craft, I have used sand paper and acid to remove iron dust . and then polish the rim out . your video is very impressive, The rims are badly damaged and you restore them to new NICE WORK! I when you have time check out my site how i remove paint overspray. When they are slamed with paint i use a razor blade.and the clay bar
