While it costs more to ride a train with a sleeper accommodation, Amtrak provides the meals in the dining car. If you ride in coach you have to pay for your meals in the dining car. I welcome the privacy although its very modest, well cozy in size.
Ive ridden coach on an Amtrak Train (crescent) and I ate in the dining car....now what I have to say is this...in coach i didnt sleep as well as I could have and I dunno about being that close to people I dont know lol....now as for the dining car I met a computer programmer and a lady that was a scientist for the Atlanta CDC
@burchified This is true, although I did have very good experiences meeting people in the dining car. I will be riding coach later this year (the Carolinian) and will post a new video about my experiences soon after.
thanks for the post - on the site they do not give you an interior view. One would be leary of booking a room because its hard to guage the scale of the room.
Thank you for posting this. I'm from Dallas, TX and I'm going to Chicago probably next summer so I'm basically seeing where I'm probably going to be at.
When you buy the sleepers you buy the food in the diners too. Community dining means they will sit you with others at your table, 2+2 =4 or 3+1=4. Doing so provides for interesting discussions, some make friends for life. Everything on a train is related to space, which there isn't much of.
The consist of a sleeping car is as such. 15 roomettes (10 on the upper level, 5 on the lower level), 5 bedrooms (all on the upper level), 1 accessible room for the physically challenge, 1 family bedroom, 1 shower stall, 3 restrooms and a changing room. I hope this info is helpful and useful.
Its actually a 10-5 configuration on the top floor with 4 additional roomettes on the lower floor along with the family bedroom and the accessible bedroom.
Hay thanks for showing the video now I know what to exspect, I'm looking forward to going to Newwark NJ from Gainvill Ga it's 16h 27m trip. This beats being stuck out on a runway tarmat for 3 hr or so anyday. Pluse you get a grat view also. Once again thanks for posting.
Very nice and useful video. I always wanted to see how a Superliner railcar was like. I'm planing to traver either on California Zephyr or Empire Buider and I can't wait!
I'm going to take the train from Cincinnati to Seattle. I'll be taking a Viewliner from Cinci to Chicago so I'll have my own toilet. I was wondering about the Superliner toilets and showers though. Was it awkward or frustrating having to share with everyone else in the car? Were the toilets clean? I'm very nervous :|
The rail car attendants on my train kept the restrooms clean and stocked full of necessary items. The water had good pressure and was hot. The rocking of the train may be awkward in the shower, but it's not bad.
The rail car attendants took care of me pretty good. They made the beds in the morning, etc. The bathrooms were small, but the water was hot. I liked the dining car experience, but be prepared for community dining. If you really want to dine alone, request your food be sent to your room or go to the snack bar. Enjoy your trip.
A long distance Amtrak trip is something you'll take with you for the rest of your life. DO IT. I just got back from a round trip on the Southwest Chief, La Plata, MO to Los Angeles. It's slower than flying but who cares? Amtrak feeds you more than you can eat & the food is great, you get to meet & eat with all sorts of interesting people (there were several Amish on both legs of the trip, for instance), and of course, you take the train for the scenery, which is excellent.

@ac30165 - When did you ride the Crescent? I just rode it recently myself from New Orleans to DC.

I'm sure you sleep better in a room, but what about all the interesting people you miss out on by not riding in coach?

I love how the K5LA sounds from the inside of the sleepers, that is of course when the sleepers are up front like they should be all the time

I've taken this to San Antonio and New Orleans, all in the roomettes. - In a few months going straight through to Chicago - is an adventure.

aiptek3019 4 years ago 2
I think there were about 8 to 10 rooms per liner. But it's still pretty private.

So did you only have one electrical outlet in your roomette?

I recall there being two outlets -- one on either side of the room.
