I've had two white rats and both of them developed huge tumors. The vet said it is very common in rats. There is really no way to prevent it from happening. We became very attached to the rats. It is amazing how one can find rats such great pets. I would never have thought I'd be a rat person but I loved those rats. RIP Kimber and Tabby.
Your rat looks just like mine! And hers grew basically over-night in that same spot. The problem is if you get it removed, it will probably grow back. I've done a lot of reading on it. And they are very expensive to remove.
@SuperKer17 Yeah the surgeries are pretty expensive. I've had 3 removed from two of my rats so far at around $130 each, and they already have more again. I only paid $15 for all three rats together when I first got them. I'm at the point where I have to decide whether it's best to keep getting surgeries or just have them put to sleep. Where is the tumor and how big is it?
@SuperKer17 You could ask your vet about surgery options. They're not going to die right away if they have a tumor, but you might want to check with the vet about it anyway.
grew it "overnight"? Took my girl several months to grow hers, and she had surgery on the 8th of December. And my brat has successfully pulled two os her surtures out as well, will have to use the staple gun on her too.
Yep, it was overnight because I had just played with them the night before. Pretty sure I would have noticed something that huge on her leg! I was shocked when I saw it. She's still tumor free almost 2 months later, but her sister, Emma, is not so lucky. Emma had one tumor removed recently from her tummy, and when she came back home, I noticed another forming on her chest/neck area. That one's growing slowly. I can't keep putting her through surgeries.. might have to euthanize her soon :(
Euthanasia only when her quality of life has been diminished not because she has a tumor. They are very suceptable to them dang things which sucks cause rats is the bestest! Good to hear that Lizzy is ok. My Miss Squeeks is getting around better each day and soon she will be able to take over the house again. As far as Emma is concerned, just love her, squeeze her and kiss her and cherish every moment she has left. We all know how short that is but the memories will last a lifetime.
Oh I know. It's not affecting her now, but it will some day. If I get any more females, I'm definitely getting them spayed so I won't have to worry as much about the mammary tumors. I'm glad your Squeeks is doing better too. I wish they lived longer. They're really awesome little animals.
Thanks! Her sister, Emma, also developed a tumor a month after Lizzy did. We had that one taken off as well, but yesterday I found another lump already. I don't think we'll continue to take Emma's tumors off. It gets expensive and is hard on her little body :(

How much did it cost you? My rat has developed a small tumor under her left arm and, for obvious reasons, I'm worried.
