The title of this song isn't "Dance Ballerina Dance," it's just "Ballerina." It was written in 1947 by Sidney Keith Russell and Carl Sigman and was a number-one hit for Vaughn Monroe.
@nero044 This wasn't the top song of 1919. It wasn't published until 1947. It was the #1 Billboard single from December 13, 1947 until February 21, 1948, when it was knocked out of the number-one position by Art Mooney's "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover."
i heard it in spanish, sung by grandmother, until i was about ten years old. we bought her the 45 of this very same recording. it was her favorite song.
This was the first recording by Mr. Monroe. The violins which were one of the best and contained several in ihe group. He redid it and the pause, brass was used instead of the violins. I saw Vaughn, Beryl Davis and Al Hibler at a large theater in Washington D.C between double feature movies I believe it was 1947. He was truly Great among singers, musician and movie Star. I have both movies he made and watch them ofter. I miss him after all these years still

Ok,I was born in 1949,love this song because my parents had plenty of 75's around, lol!!! As a teen ,Iloved all the current music ,most of the rock groups, but also developed a love of this kind of music. There are loads of young people who love the older songs, jazz, blues, etc. It's not old fashion to love all kinds of music; I also enjoy some of Lady Gaga's music, you can't judge a person by their age.
@gfks11 Kostas sent me this, too! I put this on my 1948 playlist 7 months ago. Only 30 songs on that year so far, but several have over 100! There are now about 7000 songs on my 111 lists for every year since 1900, Another listener here with me said 'wow, that was one of my dad's favorites!'
@weightfeather1 I should agree with you being a jazzer but I don't. Cole's does swing yes, but I think his version sounds forced (Tempo is to high and he's concentrating too much on technique than story) compared to this.
In my opinon this is far and away the best version. Its so relaxed and because of that the vocal has so much more conviction in the story being told.
On certain songs Cole is the master (for the reasons I give above), but on this one it's Monroe.
@Bacmaster Boy, you got THAT right!! No wonder the world's in the state it's in. Discipline is sorely lacking. Absentee parents and a good swift kick in the ass are what's needed. Amazing that this old song made us realize that today.
@Bacmaster My late mother was born in 1919. She told me stories how she got punished if her skirt was above her ankles! I'm only 52, but I was raised under very strict rules! What todays kids lack I still have. Yes, the world has changed for the worst. Greed is the demon seed of todays world. The only time people united was after 9/11 then it all did a Harry Houdini...The young kids control the parents today! I see it all the time. And the filty mouths they have! My God! What a disgrace!
@Bacmaster Fortunately, I'm one of the few born into a good family with strong unwavering moral convictions. I turn 20 in 2 weeks, we aren't all like you describe, but I will agree with you that respect, discipline, and motivation on the whole within young people today is atrocious.
@TheInfinite91 I hear you loud and clear. I don't believe we know each other, so why would you implicate yourself? The guilty ones know who they are. Just out of curiosity, what brought you here to this song? Do you like this music?
@Bacmaster Ciscero is the first recorded example of someone complaining about the kids these days, and I know for a fact that your own generation was considered out of control and lacking in morals and ambition - through records from the time there are many examples of this. The wise realize that this is simply a universal attribute of the generation gap, and that the complaints remain the same. The unwise think it is something new and novel.

This, according to time-life, was the the top song of 1919. Food for thought!

@nero044 ... Dear Lord, how far this country has fallen of any trace of respectability as a whole - sad indeed :O(

@789whatev
Funny you would say that. The first time I heard it was on a jet flying across the United States. That was 1974....I was 14 and loved it too.

@789whatev Not at all, I'm fifty years older thatn you and I've loved this song since I first heard it well before I was 14.

@789whatev Not at all dear! It shows you've got a good ear for a beautiful song beautifully sung. This is a rare thing with today's kids.

@19111ellyc I wish this were the "only" thing rare with today's kids! They lack respect, morals, manners and are spoiled rotten, just to name a few!
Respect from,
