I've been watching non-top videos of cops detaining and questioning citizens for open carry. And every time they say something along the lines of "Well we've stopped you because you're carrying a gun, people can see you carrying a gun and that scares people" And the only thing I can think to myself is.. Open carry lets the suspect know where your weapon is, allowing them to alter their plans for robbing you! Example: In scottsdale, a man turned a corner to find a shotgun in his face and demands for his keys etc. The kicker was, he had a handgun strapped to his side but still lost his car and wallet.

If everyone did open carry then yes, there would be next to no crime because no one likes eating lead. But being well versed with concealed carry means the BG has no idea you can fight back. I fully believe that an armed population leads to a safer community. I have been a law enforcement officer for 7 years. I carry every where I go. In uniform, I carry open, knowing this makes me a target. No way to fix that but situation awareness. Off duty, I'm concealed. I've been in WalMart standing 5 feet behind the open carry guy. He had no clue I was there. I was well aware of him. Does open carry make sense? Criminals don't tell you what they have, why show your hand?

Open carry may be a deterrent....MAY BE....according to Charles de Gaulle "A true leader always keeps the element of surprise up his sleeve..." I believe that concealing a weapon makes you much more unpredictable, much less of a target, and thus in combination makes you, the law abiding citizen, a dangerous person. This is great news for you and VERY BAD for the bad guys. The element of surprise is one's best weapon and has worked for various armies for centuries.

Criminals do come prepared when doing their job but then so do I (anyone with a firearm should be prepared to respond to incidents like that). The police carry loaded handguns - openly. Sometimes they shoot innocent people and sometimes they shoot someone when a net thrown over the perp would be a better choice (in the case of a citizens who has ingested something or has suffered a brain problem and is acting in a dangerous way).

It truly bothers me just how much people overreact when they see a firearm. Guns are fascinating pieces of engineering and one of the greatest modern innovations. You can kill a person with thousands of different objects just as effectively, but for some reason, guns are looked down upon the most. More people die per year in car accidents than anything gun related. You don't see people freak out when a car passes by.

That is a fallacy. You're always going to come up against someone who is bigger and stronger than you and even come up against someone who "just doesn't give a fuck" and who'll try and take it from you.

if i was going to victimize someone i wouldn't care if i saw a gun.
i would just alter my plan of attack.
i would PREFER to see the gun, it lets me gather relevant detail about the target.

If everyone did open carry then yes, there would be next to no crime because no one likes eating lead. But being well versed with concealed carry means the BG has no idea you can fight back. I fully believe that an armed population leads to a safer community. I have been a law enforcement officer for 7 years. I carry every where I go. In uniform, I carry open, knowing this makes me a target. No way to fix that but situation awareness. Off duty, I'm concealed. I've been in WalMart standing 5 feet behind the open carry guy. He had no clue I was there. I was well aware of him. Does open carry make sense? Criminals don't tell you what they have, why show your hand?

That city has the lowest crime rates in Ga because they don't know who has guns. When Guns were fully banned in the UK, rape went up 50%. Mass shootings happen in places where gun are prohibited. All you need is that instant cash you show up to the black market. Cops aren't always there to protect you when you need them. I believe that concealing a weapon makes you much more unpredictable, much less of a target, and thus in combination makes you, the law abiding citizen, a dangerous person. No way would i live in america, The only country that has no gun laws? No we don't have many people that even own a gun where i live. So there is no need for them. And if i was going to get robbed at gun point, i would give them my money? Not a big deal...Money is nothing when you are dead.

@FoundInBetween .....that was not meant as an insult to all Aussies, Brits, or anyone else. Obviously we have growing number in the US who beg to be subjects instead of Citizens and who would relinquish their freedom and responsibility to choose as well as attacking the freedom of others. I also know there are Aussies and Brits who are fighting against these types in their countries as well.

@MyPurpleMushroom The whole point behind the right to keep and bare arms in the US is to overthrow the government. That's why the second amendment was put in our constitution. The founding fathers wanted the people to be able to overthrow the government if it got out of hand.
Besides that, there is personal protection, hunting, and recreation.

I think they just hit the crux of the issue: a criminal doesn't wear his weapon openly for fear of police attention. Does that mean if police stopped checking people carrying openly that criminals would begin to carry openly?

The police carry loaded handguns - openly. Sometimes they shoot innocent people and sometimes they shoot someone when a net thrown over the perp would be a better choice (in the case of a citizens who has ingested something or has suffered a brain problem and is acting in a dangerous way).

It truly bothers me just how much people overreact when they see a firearm. Guns are fascinating pieces of engineering and one of the greatest modern innovations. You can kill a person with thousands of different objects just as effectively, but for some reason, guns are looked down upon the most. More people die per year in car accidents than anything gun related. You don't see people freak out when a car passes by.

I would rather a felon have no idea who's carrying concealed, than open Carry and be his first target. Plus let's face it...most retailers will begin to display no guns allowed signs, giving hope to criminals that this would be an easy target because there will be few law abiding citizens carrying in that establishment. Thus an easy target.
