  • I wish i could do this. i hav that same bike but to lazy to fix it

  • Really love what you did but i would have put some track grips

  • dam ! pretty sick job ! :D

  • Nice rebuild, man. I just started stripping down a Raleigh Winner for a new fixie project. Next step: sanding!

  • too mucha, nice work

  • <3

  • good music, cool bike

  • what is that pading on the the bikes uper frame whats it called and whats it for ? i want one for my classic roadbike to cover up the bad paint job

  • You fixie snobs make me sick. Cool bike man, do your thing.

  • love everything except the grips... rather put on a tape...

  • WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO....NO DONT PUT THE GRIPS ON LIKE THAT!

  • fail grip

  • The supercourses are sweet bikes. I actually have a '73. They would make a nice conversion in every aspect except the bottom bracket height. Way too low for fixed gear in my opinion.

  • I don't know WTF all these dudes are talking about!!! I saw this video and even though I am a novice rider at best I still think what you did was art 100% the parts you've selected were better than average and the whole DROP BAR thing was creative plus will turn heads,I have no problem.... way to go man these haters kill me cause there is hardly any rebuilds on youtube if you can do better PROOVE IT!!!! I have built 2 bike since seeing this video....

  • i like it more doing projects, i hate how most of the kids buy them pre made as single speeds as a fashion statement, good hard work is far more satisfying, good job man!

  • Bloody sacrilege, doing that to an old Raleigh.

  • nice work dude ! i actually just inherited my dad's 1970's grand prix. it's in rough shape and i don't know much about bike repair.. but i'm hoping to fix it up by the time i move to NYC and have it operational with some new parts.

  • SickAs hell

  • How much was it to powdercoat it?

  • oury got raped

  • to be honest, in the begining i was doubtfull in your reconstruction. but by the end i was thourougly impressed!!

  • Can anyone help me with the removal of a 70s style, Raleigh road bike fork? I took the bolt off the top of headset and it still wont release. I've never took apart a bike before so I'm really at a loss right now. I've done everything I could meanwhile, but I need it off now and I'm trying to do it myself to save money.

  • @1ASMA3 You probably have a threaded fork. This should help you w w w.parktool (dot) com/blog/repair-help/threaded-headset-service

  • @marc240792 Yea, I ended up getting it off (your guess was right too). Turns out there was just a ton of rust in there and that's why it was ceased up; I used an air hammer at my buddy's shop it popped off. Thanks for the response though.

  • @1ASMA3 try holding the front wheel with ur legs, and put some bars in the stem and twist back and forth to break the cease if the stem and fork

  • lol, you painted over the heads

  • This is my favorite bike of all time!!!!! Stop The F'in TRolling

  • good video, nice build, top marks

  • @gayforwesley I should be forthright in stating that I nearly fell prey to the same mistake which is spending the hours to convert something that already is functional into something that's, albeit slightly, more aesthetically pleasing. Veterans and aspiring new members of the cycling community, myself included, ought bear in mind the dichotomy that lies between function and aesthetics. This project I feel to be exemplary of an overemphasis of the latter.

  • Poor old Raleigh turned into something it doesn't deserve.

  • why not just tape the bars???????????????????

  • You have no right to call your bicycle a Raleigh. What was once eloquent, refined, and functional has been made a cheap whore with you as her pimp, riding her. A pimp with panache doesn't ride his own girls.

  • @phroboi so the bike spoke well? nm the pun

though i agree his style choices were lame

  • use grip tape

  • You should have sprung for a decent stem.

  • LOL the grips on the drop downs

  • i have a raleigh to and i fixed it up and converted into a fixie dam it took me whole days and nights to sand it down completely what kind of paint did you use (:

  • Lots of work but a great outcome.Very unique,very original.Great job,enjoy your bike.

  • bllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrghhhhhh

  • haha the grips on dropbars. get tape stupid. nice bike though

  • i feel like if you put ourys on a less curved drop bar they would look better, i saw one earlier today with a similar set-up, and then they wrapped the rest of the bars. it looked nice

  • i have the same one but mine is black and red and the badge is in great condidtion

  • Comment removed

  • Although I love multi-speeded mountain bikes more, I must say that your build-up is very nice and that frame is a real beauty ! Cheers mate !

  • im rebilding a raleigh i think there frame is really nice!

  • i agree that it was more beutiful with the original parts, but some ppl here seems to think that the looks is everything i dont care if i got pink/puke colored bike if it rides good

anyway it looks like a nice bike good job

  • i like the grips and everything on this bike...i have a Raleigh Record and i cant wait to get the paint done, fixies are the shit and the people that hate ar just mad they dont have th balls to ride em hahahaa

  • oh my god.. ruined a nice frame and destroyed the original parts. You know if you don't want to ride a drop bar, theres risers available for grips like that. Well hope your friends think you're cool doing nohanded skids. Thats rad.

  • Where you buy that single speed crank/Gear. If you know any websites that are secure that sell cranks please send the address thanks.

  • how did you get that badge off/ plan on putting it back on?

    im also rebuilding a raleigh

  • No brakes?

  • No brakes?

  • No brakes?

  • What size bottom bracket do you have? I'm rebuilding a late 70's Raleigh Rampar R1 and have no idea what size bottom bracket it needs....thanks for your help if you read this!

  • Beautiful.

    Great job.

I have an early 1970's schwinn passport that's a single.

    Enjoy.

  • shoulda kept the badge

  • how did you powder coat it ?

  • wow that bike looks super uncomfortable to ride

  • hey how much did the fixed gear parts cost you?

  • nice i like it

  • How much from start to finish if i may ask? im just trying to get an idea ... this is one of the cleanest i ve ever seen man great job. i like the stance.

  • everybody her is crazy!!! :D

  • Raleighs are a good of frame as any. If the dementions fit you well, they are more worth restoring than any vintage bianchi etc that doesn't fit you as nicely....thats my opinion.

  • is this bike worth restoring because i see these bikes all the time on junk day and everyone says there worthless. some please respond!

  • @WHOSYOJEFE: Like any project, it's about the love you have you have for the hobby; and having fun making something great again. It could be a sidewalk special or a pro bike, makes no difference.

  • the bike might of been good back then but why would you restore it? is it really worth all restoring because i see many raliegh bikes like these on junk day and every says that they are worthless. Someone please respond to me!

  • It's great to see enthusiasts like you, please keep on the work! Do you protect the inner tubes? If so, how do you do it and what do you use? Good luck, Gerhard

  • dude i have that exact bike same color and every thing i got it for free from a neighbor

  • put some bar end plugs in or that h/bar will come around and take a chunk out of ya

  • You left the headset top and bottom cups on and powder coated over them. LOL =)

  • those grips are not made to be used like that

  • @johngorgis do you have to do everything the wasy its supposed to? no you don't, otherwise you would use capital letters and punctuation.

  • haha

  • @johngorgis do you think he doesnt know that? i love that its different. im restoring my 79 le tour iv at the moment. but when im finished im totally killing my 89 sprint. :D

  • @johngorgis The idea of building a fixie is that you make it the way you want.Personally I think it looks great.

  • @johngorgis haha that guy is a dumbass

  • @johngorgis This his Liking ....

  • Beautiful bike

  • Raleigh Professional Mark 4 still more them 30 year. Is there better?

  • ............... Puffff

  • seat's crooked

  • Haha

  • I don't get this fixie thing at all.

I have 4 classic Raleigh racers (Record Ace, Road Ace, Team Replica & Quasar). All with a full compliment of gears.

  • then fucking convert one dood!!!!!

  • dude, awesome paint job. but i have issues. #1 is the oury grips on your track drops? seriously dude? and the handlebars aren't even put on correctly. they should be more parallel to the ground.

the top tube pad clashes a little. but it's mostly the handlebars. would be a great looking bike otherwise.

  • not with that stem, it works better if the angle of the stem flows into the angle of the handlebars

  • @c0ximo not everyone thinks like you.

  • Is that powder cote? nice paint job...

  • Very nice!!!

  • totally agree with kimsterjizznugget on the handlebars, bit too narrow and the owrys are kinda outtaplace (i would imagine it with white tape, rather). other than that a nice clean conversion.

PS. a bit of a personal problem with the marco seats. dunno why i think of dolce & gabanna everytime i see them.

  • The narrow handle bars are for messengers so they can easily weave threw cars.

  • duh

  • Your saying duh to me are you?

  • The Ourys on dropped bars that really shouldn't have any grips were an EPIC fail!!!

  • @kimsterjizznugget stfu dude u dont know what ur talking about they are perfect

  • @bugs9410 um too bad i do know what i'm talking about. ourys only look good on risers. cock mouth

  • @bugs9410 Actually they do look cool. neverminnnnndddddddd.

  • @kimsterjizznugget it was his wierd choice leave him be

  • why didnt you do it to another raleigh frame of ebay or somewhere, and leave this original.

the parts look in fine condition,a good clean would of done it proud.

    what a sad day:(

  • you might as well of gone and bought a new of the shelf racer.

You have killed the character of the bike as soon as you stripped her down.

We get these old bikes to enjoy the era,not to change it.

you should of just cleaned and changed parts if needed and a good polish.

It could of been a cool retro ride, shame :(

  • that is ugly.

  • nice conversion i have an English Raleighfixed conversion , not feeling the ourys on drops so much but still a nice bike

  • Ew, it's a fixie.

nice job other than the handle bars and I like your $10 seatpost ( 1:13 ) ya cheapass hahaha

  • I stumbled upon this video, i just sold a raleigh super record frame set up for fixed gear. I love what you did to this bike, a true work of art and a great tune to showcase it. thanks for posting and sharing

  • dont like handel bars but nice bike

  • great song

  • How come there is no breaks !!!

    Nice work still :d

  • The oury's are such a fail.

  • nice bike!!!

  • that is a fucking wicked ass job

  • great bike, i did the same with a raligh super course i had thatw as from the 70s, its all white with black pedals, seat and tape. everything else is white

  • top tube pad is so nasty

  • Pre 90's frames make for poor handling.

  • @likestoride93 You're not supposed to have a really tight chain. tight chain= increased drive chain wear and tear.

Thats the nicest conversion I've ever seen, I would have liked it more if you didn't put Oury's on the bars.

  • im in love!

  • sweet, i bet it was fun

  • dude that thing gave me chill's

and steven62313 highier seat post means that your more arodynamic

  • Hey dude ! It's pretty good !

How did u repainted your frame ? Did u use a spray or liquid's paintworks ? Maybe a professionel car painter ?

  • how the hell could you even ride it....you would be sooo bent over lol

  • i like it all except for the chain. like all that hard work in and then that slack chain! its driving me crazy man!

    p.s. i love the ourys

  • technically you can put a cog on an old rim, but the chances of it working are low. I have a flip flop hub on my velocity deep v's which are laced to a miche primato. I suggest getting a fixed hub, you'll find that you have less problems in the long run

  • Great looking bike...very nice work...good form!

Enjoy it! After all that work, you derserve it.

  • sick bike, but wierd grip placement??

  • What happened to the beautiful badge?

  • I saved it all the way until the end, but during the cleaning process, mineral spirits spilled on it and the paint melted away.

  • oury grips are for risers or for straight bars. other then that the bike looks great!

  • Awesome work! Bike looks great!

  • Raleighs are great for single speeds

  • I fucking can't stand it when cunts put oury grips on dropbars like that. DO you really think it looks cool??? It is like wearing long johns with cut off denim shorts and hiking boots. You fucked up a great bike

  • for putting grips on his bike, you flip out like that?

  • Good job! I'm working on my Raleigh Grand Prix 1977...after many years of sun and mistreats by crackheads in miami.

  • haha remember me? i like to come back and watch this because it reminds me of my pains of converting a really beat up raliegh, but now i ride iro yah

  • Awesome job!.

  • reminds me of the kids who spend $10,000 to pimp their $1500 Hondas...hey at least they found a hobby

  • Hardly a good comparison of what I've done.

By this point, nothing is original except for the frame. The reason being because I value the frame based off its geometry.

  • hey you have tubular tires right?

  • It's a Raliegh, you really think something like a Surly would compare. If anything, it's like restoring an old hot rod.

  • @snakerivercycles this isn't bike ricing, this is art.

  • You gotta buy quality parts first!

  • sick ass bike. Im working on a fixie right now. but one question. How the hell can you afford a san marco racing seat? haha nice job

  • Really nice job, but the top tube cover is trendy garbage in my opinion.

Again, excellent job on the conversion. Lots of work put into that bike, enjoy it, flaunt it!

  • why didnt you take the cups out of the frame when you powder coated it?

  • they were taped off and unaffected by the powder coat. In the future, however, I would take them off. It is useless to question it, they've already been replaced with a Chris King headset.

  • oh good, chris king FTW!

p.s. contrary to what everyone else is saying, i think this bike is a sweet bike, i actually took an old raleigh and repainted the frame orange for my girlfriend. (i have a video of it on my youtube account) but the bike is sweet

  • Agreed, but go back to high school and learn how to express yourself without looking like a tool.

  • A+ dude! Great job!

  • wtf, these bikes are fun as shit to ride. fixies are sexy

  • Wow! A hater on the Internet who uses the words "faggot" and "gay"?!? What is this world coming to?

  • The internet is serious business, good sir, and the words "faggot", and "gay" exemplify the insult two-fold. It almost seems like you are insinuating that the internet is a place where you shouldn't take everything seriously, and at the same time, I believe that you are taking the internet seriously also. While being a façade, I can see through the sarcasm and into the root of your problem. You indeed DO believe that the internet is serious business, and I applaud you for your stupidity.

  • Pip-pip, cheerio and all that.

  • there was a lot of chain slack on that

  • Way to fucking flashy.

  • As clean as it looks, I still want to punch you in the face for stripping the original Raleigh paint and decals. They were pure beauty, in any condition. Otherwise, nice build.

  • I was pretty disappointed about stripping the original paint, but the build called for a bit of metal work which left the paint finish choppy. But to be completely honest, the high-gloss black finish doesn't look half bad.

  • @ 2:44 your seat appears to be of center, just a heads up (and just playin) and great bike I'm about to start a fixed gear project.

  • lose the top tube pad, tape the parts of the handlebars not covered by the grips, and you'll have a nice looking bike. imo the top tube pad just looks tacky

  • hello you did nice job on your bike. im newb at fixie bike scene but i want to convert my old bike. im wondering where did u take your bike to get it sanded and painted?

  • I live in the Cleveland area. I went to a place in Eylria Ohio that does media blasting and powder-coating. The guy that runs the place works with bikes a lot. It was a quality job.

  • Thanks for the reply. I'm coming from another place. I used to own/race a TEAM Raleigh(red, black, yellow) in the 80s. Lovely bike so I would love one original, in the team colours etc with good race gear. I also roadrace(geared race bike of course) now and train a lot on a SS(freewheel) but its set up like my geared roadbikes - it must be practical(and it looks good) for me. So - combining practical and retro in a classic Raleigh would be my choice.

  • Like the Curate's egg - good in parts. Why make it such a mess of good & bad. The seat doesn't suit, it needs bar tape and two brakes(it is a road bike) and the crankset looks 'cheap'. Put the Heron headbadge back one. Nice paint finish though.

  • i respect your comments. To a certain extend, you are correct. Yet, i'm a fixed gear nut, I can't change my ways.

  • Why would you need brakes on a fixed gear, road bike or not why does it matter. Also its not your bike, maybe all the parts he used were on sale.

  • Ok some people don't run brakes on a Fixie - & survive. Other bikes need brakes!

The guy has done a very good job with it(for the style he wants) he/it doesn't seem the type to put el cheapo stuff on his bike just because its on sale.

  • can someone help me figure out wat brand my fixed gear bike is ill put up slideshow. It was my aunts abandonded bike at my house no 1 used so one day i decided to convert it and did everything. But wen i was sanding it, it said sumthing like {full arrow speed} or sumthing like that cant quite remember and at the very bottom if i flipped it over i think the year said 1959 or sumthing similar pls sumone help me!!!!!!!! i really need to know

  • i have this bike.

i just converted into a fixie about a week ago

  • I think you'll love it. I'll be riding this puppy until it finally gives out.

  • what is that jacket cover that you put on the top tube of your frame called??? (its plaid)

    --nice bike btw---

  • It's a top tube pad made Bici Concepts.

  • what are the rear dropouts coated with? i noticed they werent powder coated

  • They weren't coated with anything because the black powder coat didn't include a clear coat because of its already glossy state.

  • i have a 1977 romic and on the front and rear dropouts the paint has chiped off and they are rusted. is there anyway to prevent that because it looked like your rear dropouts were like a flat yellowish grey color as aposed to balck where your bolt is.

  • you can remove the rust and then keep your bike out of bad weather. My bike rarely sees rust on the bare dropouts due to the conditions I tend to ride in. If you want a more permanent fix, remove the rust and put a clearcoat on the dropouts

  • thanks ill most likely clear coat em.

  • Dave, this video is awesome! Your bike looks great. the black powder coating is so slick and grips on your drop-downs is an inspired touch. More rebuilds and more videos like this one please.

  • Wow. You've given me some inspiration! I own a 1985 Raleigh Grand Prix with original Shimano 105 components. It's been hanging in the garage for over 15 yrs and in decent condition, but currently riding a 2007 roadie with aluminum frame. I'd love to get the ole Raleigh running again and compare cro-moly to aluminum. Been intrigued on fixed (or even single) speed set-ups. Thanks for your video.......and loved the Dear Prudence background!

  • Media blasting is done with a tool that shoots bits of material out at a fast rate which strips paint and other materials. You can sand it, however, it is very tedious work and usually of lesser quality compared to a media blast. The range from about $15-$30 depending on the shop. If you want a really good paint job, then go have your frame powder coated. But if you're low on cash, then spray painting will do.

  • what brand of paint did you use on it?

    really nice gloss. so shiny!

is it a spray or regular paint?

  • It was powder coated. Not really familiar with what paint was used other than "high gloss black." The local shop does its thing.

  • what did you use to clean the junk inside the bottom bracket thing? im doing the same for my old raleigh grand prix and im getting my ass handed to me because the headset is hella rusty and i cant get it off. help?
