Websters Dictionary definition of Socialism: means of production and distribution of goods controlled by the government. However, most modern "socialist" countries are actually capitalist. They just tax the hell out of businesses and higher earning individuals. Meanwhile, these "socialists" criticize capitalism, even though they depend on it for money -- like parasites.

While I agree with you that there has been no socialist country, I would like to make a correction to your dictionary definition of socialism: Under real socialism, the means of production and distribution would be democratically controlled by workers (not necessarily "the government")

If u take psychology 101 you'll see that several experiments have been done showing that in non-competitive contexts people do better; if there is no competition and no pressure great things can be done. (often within moral guidelines as opposed to capitalism)

Do what better? In some contexts such as in the household for certain tasks but when it comes to an economy it does'nt work. You the consumer create competition, do you think the computer you use today would be anywhere near as good if there had been no competition in the market? You create competition because you want the best and thats fair enough.

Empirical evidence would seem to suggest the exact opposite, that things that are driven by competition and profit (eg computers, Fed Ex etc) are generally far more satisfactory to us than things that are driven by the "common good" (NYC subway, public housing etc). Pressure is part of the metaphysics of human survival. Competition is the fuel of progression. It is beautiful.

My work benefits the company I work for and in turn benefits me by giving me the salary that my employer and I mutually agree on. Nothing is perfect, but you cannot argue that the economic prospects of people are better under real socialism, I mean cite an example. Did you have any economists at your rally by the way? Profit is good for people, in the words of John F. Kennedy - "a rising tide lifts all boats." The reality is the relative prosperity of every person who can read this is due to the free market.

Most of the greatest inventions in the world were not motivated by money - eg. penicillin, and other great medical breakthroughs.  Capitalism has meant that medical companies concentrate on what makes them money - not what will help people - hence the fact they spend a huge amount on advertising paracetamol and little on research.

What makes money is what people want. People buy want they need according to their priorites. And reasearch is directed through self interest of the business, they then sell improved products because people want the better product. Therefor you and I are rewarding these peoples intiative through them receiving profits.

You do understand that the reason drugs and medical cost are so high is because of Government intervention into the market. To get a drug approved by the FDA cost close to 1 billion dollars and 10 years of time. You can not tell that is a good thing. Face it socialism is nothing but slavery. Actually all those products arose from a free market providing products to the consumer, in exchange for profit. Different manufacturers competed directly to provide more for less.
