Retired gunsmith Jali Timari (father of Jatimatic) made a scale model of Suomi KP - it used 6,35mm/.25ACP as ammo. Beautiful craftmanship, and, you might have guessed it - fully functional.
I did have opportunity to fire couple drums with that awesome weapon in Finnish army somewhere in year 87-88 and i did get the picture that there are plenty of those still in army storages.
@LivetysWiretys ofcourse the russians made a copy of it they are probably still pissed that the finnish beat them in the winter war it still pisses me off that they say they only lossed i think they said 450
@Kuhlfurst Enemmänkin sen ulkomuoto on kopioitu. Aseen toiminta mekanismi on toista luokkaa, mutta tuota asetta ei oltaisi koskaan tehty ilman suomi-konepistoolin mallina olemista.
Russian PPSH is planned on Suomi KP, but made it cheaper and faster to produce. Suomi Kp is planned on Bergmann MP18. So Bergmann MP18 is the "orginal" one.
Nice proper Suomi without the "suujarru" muzzle brake of the later models. The gun's designer Aimo Lahti thought that the addition of the suujarru was completely unnecessary but he was overruled by some Finnish army high brass. Apparently the correct way to shoot a Suomi full auto is to rest your thumb on the receiver end cap and let it absorb the recoil.
My grandfather used this weapon in the Winter War and the Continuation War and he pointed out how reliable this weapon. I tried it in the army and it was a enjoyable experience. Never went full auto of course, but still...
As another note anyone have a vid/ reveiw about the Thompson submachine gun. Id like to see that.
@Kuhlfurst that`s so true!!russian spy`s stole Aimo Lahti`s drawings at the late 1920` and make copy of suomi kp 31.that`s why the russian gun in also rather goog :)
@zewewx not really. the looks are the same. but ppsh41 is more like tomygun. suomi is more accurate, and heavier. it is the best submashine gun of the ww2.
Maximum range is 400 meters, depended on the model thought. There are about 3 different models of this gun used in frontline combat, so it really depends which one of them you mean.
The first model was rather expensive to produce and I recall that it had a slight overheating problem. Can't confirm this right now thought.
@LeDeux11 in my experiance with machine guns, pistol caliber guns do not get nearly as hot as rifle cal MGs do. i can burn out a brownings heavy barrel to smoothbore in about 10,000 rounds because of the heat, but my sterling has over 10,000 rounds through it and still has 85% of its rifling. you can shoot this thing all day long without overheating. Max EFFECTIVE range on 9mm is only about 100 Meters. 9mm has about 250 ft lbs left at that range. My experiances only, your mileage may vary.
Last I checked, pre 1986 Stemple replicas ran about $7,000, with an original kp31 priced at $50,000. However, for my movie idea, there IS an armory that can probably build blank firing replicas.
@misterbill1911 I have seen a few in the $12-15,000.00 range over the last couple of years (real ones, not stemple tubes), and i know a guy who bought a Husqvarna M37 for $7500.00 several years ago. @Psycocat93 Painava? Noin 4,5 kiloa ei kyllä ole painava. Monimutkainen?
My interest in the kp31 sprung from my ongoing project of writing a screenplay about Simo Hayha and the resulting broadening interest in the Winter War. By modern standards it's hearvy and not the best ergonomically, but for its time it was an incredible weapon for trench fighting and woodlands ambushes.
Suomi KP. Quality extremely high but since in production phase that thing is expected to hit a small target 100 times from 100 tries, you can imagine it wasnt the cheapest gun to produce. Thats why only hardened veterans received SKP:s first.
@SuperFinnish ah, other comments support my statements for example: "PPSH is a clone of KP/31. Vilho Pentikäinen took the blueprints to the soviets, he was a damn betrayer." But I admit my mistake. They look like the same at least from a distance. The barrel cooler gaps are different.
It's nice that even Americans can appreciate Finnish firearms :) Seems like nowadays every Call of Duty playing fag/US Marine just goes "M4! M4!" despite there being thousands of better guns out there, no offence intended.
@jlmdfnbo Well, since i am a VERY proud former U.S. Marine i do take offense to this, especially since you placed the word Fag next to the term Marine. I normally do not care what people say about me, but start talking crap about my beloved Marine Corps and it starts to get on my nerve, and i only have 1 left, so please kindly kick rocks :)
@oldsrocketscientist True, he did put the word 'fag' next to the word 'marine', but I think he intended to call the generic CoD player a fag, not the U.S. Marines. Anyway, nice video!
@ihaterobbie123 who said anything about there being something wrong with being gay?? If you take offense to the term fag being used in a pejorative manner then you need to ask JLMDFNBO about that because he is the one who used the word Fag in a derogatory way, and it could even be taken like he used it in a derogative way towards U.S. Marines which is what frosted my balls. If that's a problem for you then you may kick stones too - just watch the video and enjoy it for what it is.
@C172Pilotdude Whoa, calm down dude, I'm not gay but I don't see what's wrong with it. If someone's attracted to people of the same sex then there's not really anything that they can do about it. I don't see how you can morally condemn someone for the way they are. Even if they were bisexual and chose a relationship with the same sex, I don't see how that's a bad thing. It's none of anyone else's business and it's between two consenting individuals.
@ihaterobbie123 This video is about the Suomi KP31/M31 sub machine gun, not about being gay, or homosexual, and its not about the video game Call of Duty, or about the U.S. Marine Corps. so let's keep it on topic (KP31 suomi), and save all off topic comments for places better suited for there discussion eh? Most of my other videos have the comments turned off for this very reason. If you want to see cool video about the Suomi then hang out and lets talk about the suomi - otherwise move along.
@jlmdfnbo Suomi is a quality firearm, but the M4 is in a completely different class both literally and figuratively speaking, both work on entirely different principles and fill different roles to compare the two is quite simply ignorant.
Suomi-KP is a lot better than Thompson or PPSh. Thompson is to shoot around, the hits are scattered and PPSh was a copy of Kp31. Suomi Kp is accurate and reliable at every weather.
a firearm is just a tool, and nothing more. In the immortal words of Senior Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann " It's a hard heart that kills". Should the Russians decide to invade my country I might have to use the firearm for what it was originally built for, but until then i enjoy shooting a finely crafted, nice looking, and pleasant shooting buzzsaw at defenseless paper targets, cans, and rocks - oh the humanity!!
@oldsrocketscientist Is this an original Konepistooli M31, or is it one of the later replicas sold as an Stg 45? I was wondering given the stock appears in extremely good condition. Even the pre 1986 Stg's are byond me at $7,000 and I've read of an original Suomi going for $50,000-if you can find one in the USA.
@misterbill1911 It is not a BRP Corp replica suomi built off of a Stemple tube. It is 100% M31 Suomi. Centerfire systems used to sell Suomi replacement parts sets for $19.95 and i bought close to 10 of them, and every one of them had perfect stocks. VERY easy to get a very nice stock for a Suomi.
@misterbill1911 hell... you can hardly find one in finland. i mean functional one. not deactivated. i am finnish and i`m dying to get my hands an original m31, but i can`t find any :(
@JykaZ This gun is absolutely beautiful no matter what it was originally made for!! It has very nice arctic birch furniture on it. It is made of very hi quality steel alloy with alot of nickel in it. It is hot blued, and shoots very very nice. It is a very well made firearm and to those who can appreciate something like that it absolutely is very beautiful.
@oldsrocketscientist Agreed. The figuring in the wood furniture is absolutely gorgeous. I've seen a couple of 'em that were tiger striped and were so beautiful it was almost poetic. On a related note, I detest the parkerizing on the TGI semi-auto ones. It just ruins the look of a classic weapon.
@vihannes3 Ei kaikkia pyssyjä ole suunniteltu ihmisten tappamista varten...ilmakivääri, hirvikivääri etc... suomikonepistooli on suunniteltu ainoastaan pysäyttämään toinen ihmisapina.
@JykaZ would you call a halk or an owl beautiful? I would they are designed by nature to be killers as with leapords and tigers even human beings as omnivores we are built as hunters and as hitory has shown we are the best hunters, yet many people don't kill others or if they do(say in self defence) don't enjoy it but does that make them less? no, this gun may be designed to kill but it never has to its the operater not the gun, weapons are beutiful some people arn't
@JykaZ wait wait wait wait. I thought that the russians used the ppsh 41 in WWII, so why would it be used to jull them? please forgive me if I am wrong, I dont really know the ppsh 41's hisory after WWII.
@JackAndRizoGunSmiths What? PPSH is not the same version of the Suomi-KP... First was created Suomi in 1931, then during war communist Vilho Pentikäinen took blueprints to soviets who created their own gun (PPSH-41) similar to Suomi. PPSH is basically the same gun as Suomi, but it is still completely new and different version.
@JykaZ That fine Tool saved my grandfather life so it is more than beautiful. we did not want war, russians try to invade here. so what is country wich does not defend it's independence? Main purpose was to defend small country where more than 10 times bigger country try to invade.. so if you love dictators and communist then i understand your comment...
Main difference between PPsH41 and M/31 Suomi SMG is that M/31 has changeable barrell. Dem russkies copied M/31 after the Winter War -39-40 when they met some resistance in snowy forests.
BTW the most illegally copied Finnish design is not those orange Fiskars scissors, but that 75 round drum magazine iconic to Suomi SMG, mag. model Koskinen.
@levaslevas drum magazines hold 72 rounds of 9mm Luger ( 9x19mm ). Coffin mags are 50 rounds triple stack magazine, and the standard stick magazine was a 36 round double stack mag.
@SuperHooCee I have messed with a Husqvarna made M37 and the gun in this video is a FInn M31 Suomi. I have also loaded the drum magazine more times than i care to, and at 981 rounds per minute i have spent a fair amount of money sending ammo downrange in this gun, and i promise that the drum mag holds 72 rounds of ammo. I also saw a earlier comment that the mag holds 71 rounds with 1 in the chamber, but this is an open bolt subgun and that is impossible with this gun. 72 rounds in this gun
where did you see that recommendation if i may ask? The drum must be wound all the way to the end before you can start to load it, and it doesnt matter if you put 72 into the drum or 60, the thing works the same way no matter how many you load into it. Its not even close to tight putting the 72nd round into the drum. As you can see from the videos, the gun runs perfectly with 72 rounds placed in the drum.
@TaZ101SAGA they both have their advantages and disadvantages. The PPSH 41 has a lighter barrel, making it overall lighter but less accurate. The KP 31 has a much heavier barrel which makes it more accurate but also more tiresome on a soldier in the field who has to carry it around all day. I think the weight difference is about two and a half pound if i recall. They both have the same rate of fire from what i could tell and have the same magazine capacity with the 71 round drum (+1 chambered)
@baronofcheese It is fairly accurate for a submachine gun because it is so heavy that it doesnt jump around much when shooting it. it also has a very fast rate of fire which i personally don't care for much, and it has a blade style sighting system. The barrel is not that tight of a fit into the receiver and barrel shroud and it can move some. This personal gun had shims cut to take out some of the slop in the barrel, and shroud fitment to the receiver which helps a great deal.
@oldsrocketscientist continued from above. I own a Sterling L2a3 which i consider to be the finest shooting sub machine gun made, and maybe im just used to how nice the Sterling is, but i found the Sterling to be more accurate than the suomi mostly because of rate of fire, better sights, smaller lighter and more ergonomic package, and im used to shooting the Sterling. One HUGE advantage the Suomi has over the sterling is mag capacity. wish the sterling had a 72 round magazine.
Looks like southern Utah, I was born in Finland and now live in Colorado, the KP31 has always fascinated me. Is yours a dealer sample? Thanks for posting this video, I might have to look into a semi-auto conversion KP-31.
@123karismith Southern Utah is 70 miles away from us. The firearm is a dealer's sample that belongs to a business here. I wish i had a transferable one, but it is still nice to be able to shoot one. This one runs perfectly with Winchester white box 115 grain bulk pack, federal 124 grain, and independence 115 grain ammo in drums, coffin mags, or 36 round stick mags. It will not run steel cased wolf brand ammo.
@oldsrocketscientist "It will not run steel cased wolf brand ammo." I would sure hope that it would not eat cheap Russian ammo, this fine piece of Finnish war-craft should only be fed the best, without these KP31's Finland would be speaking Russian!!!! Suomi's have real Sisu! Igitur qui desiderat pacem praeparet bellum

If you want to see cool video about the Suomi then hang out and lets talk about the suomi - otherwise move along.
oldsrocketscientist 4 months ago
@oldsrocketscientist In the spirit of what you just said, the suomi is one beautiful sub gun.
ihaterobbie123 4 months ago
@jlmdfnbo Suomi is a quality firearm, but the M4 is in a completely different class both literally and figuratively speaking, both work on entirely different principles and fill different roles to compare the two is quite simply ignorant.
blaketheawesomedude 6 months ago
Suomi-KP is a lot better than Thompson or PPSh. Thompson is to shoot around, the hits are scattered and PPSh was a copy of Kp31. Suomi Kp is accurate and reliable at every weather.
Troller1500 7 months ago
@Troller1500 PPSH-41 is not a copy of Suomi M31, only thing that was copied was the drum magazine.

a firearm is just a tool, and nothing more. In the immortal words of Senior Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann " It's a hard heart that kills". Should the Russians decide to invade my country I might have to use the firearm for what it was originally built for, but until then i enjoy shooting a finely crafted, nice looking, and pleasant shooting buzzsaw at defenseless paper targets, cans, and rocks - oh the humanity!!
oldsrocketscientist 7 months ago
@oldsrocketscientist Is this an original Konepistooli M31, or is it one of the later replicas sold as an Stg 45? I was wondering given the stock appears in extremely good condition. Even the pre 1986 Stg's are byond me at $7,000 and I've read of an original Suomi going for $50,000-if you can find one in the USA.
misterbill1911 6 months ago
@misterbill1911 It is not a BRP Corp replica suomi built off of a Stemple tube. It is 100% M31 Suomi. Centerfire systems used to sell Suomi replacement parts sets for $19.95 and i bought close to 10 of them, and every one of them had perfect stocks. VERY easy to get a very nice stock for a Suomi.
oldsrocketscientist 6 months ago
@misterbill1911 hell... you can hardly find one in finland. i mean functional one. not deactivated. i am finnish and i`m dying to get my hands an original m31, but i can`t find any :(

PPSH is a clone of KP/31. Vilho Pentikäinen took the blueprints to the soviets, he was a damn betrayer.

JykaZ 7 months ago
@JykaZ This gun is absolutely beautiful no matter what it was originally made for!! It has very nice arctic birch furniture on it. It is made of very hi quality steel alloy with alot of nickel in it. It is hot blued, and shoots very very nice. It is a very well made firearm and to those who can appreciate something like that it absolutely is very beautiful.
oldsrocketscientist 7 months ago
@oldsrocketscientist Agreed. The figuring in the wood furniture is absolutely gorgeous. I've seen a couple of 'em that were tiger striped and were so beautiful it was almost poetic. On a related note, I detest the parkerizing on the TGI semi-auto ones. It just ruins the look of a classic weapon.

@JackAndRizoGunSmiths What has PPSH-41 to do with this?
SuperFinnish 6 months ago
@SuperFinnish The PPSH-41 is russian version of KP-31 Suomi. KP-31 Suomi is older than PPSH-41.
rekifps 6 months ago
@rekifps Its not Russian version of KP-31, since they use different internal mechanics. Only the drum magazine on the PPSH-41 is copied from KP-31.

JackAndRizoGunSmiths 5 months ago
@JackAndRizoGunSmiths What? PPSH is not the same version of the Suomi-KP... First was created Suomi in 1931, then during war communist Vilho Pentikäinen took blueprints to soviets who created their own gun (PPSH-41) similar to Suomi. PPSH is basically the same gun as Suomi, but it is still completely new and different version.

@JykaZ That fine Tool saved my grandfather life so it is more than beautiful. we did not want war, russians try to invade here. so what is country wich does not defend it's independence? Main difference between PPsH41 and M/31 Suomi SMG is that M/31 has changeable barrell. Dem russkies copied M/31 after the Winter War -39-40 when they met some resistance in snowy forests.
BTW the most illegally copied Finnish design is not those orange Fiskars scissors, but that 75 round drum magazine iconic to Suomi SMG, mag. model Koskinen.

how many rounds do the drum magazines hold?
levaslevas 10 months ago
@levaslevas drum magazines hold 72 rounds of 9mm Luger ( 9x19mm ). Coffin mags are 50 rounds triple stack magazine, and the standard stick magazine was a 36 round double stack mag.
oldsrocketscientist 10 months ago
@oldsrocketscientist actually m31 holds 40 rounds in drum. and m37 holds 70 rounds. so you have m37 not m31.
SuperHooCee 8 months ago
@SuperHooCee I have messed with a Husqvarna made M37 and the gun in this video is a FInn M31 Suomi. I have also loaded the drum magazine more times than i care to, and at 981 rounds per minute i have spent a fair amount of money sending ammo downrange in this gun, and i promise that the drum mag holds 72 rounds of ammo. I also saw a earlier comment that the mag holds 71 rounds with 1 in the chamber, but this is an open bolt subgun and that is impossible with this gun. 72 rounds in this gun
oldsrocketscientist 8 months ago
@oldsrocketscientist okey then. but its recommended to put only 70 rounds in the drum.
SuperHooCee 8 months ago
@SuperHooCee
where did you see that recommendation if i may ask? The drum must be wound all the way to the end before you can start to load it, and it doesnt matter if you put 72 into the drum or 60, the thing works the same way no matter how many you load into it. Its not even close to tight putting the 72nd round into the drum. As you can see from the videos, the gun runs perfectly with 72 rounds placed in the drum.

A very underrated submachine gun indeed, PPSh 41 isnt really as good.
TaZ101SAGA 11 months ago
@TaZ101SAGA they both have their advantages and disadvantages. The PPSH 41 has a lighter barrel, making it overall lighter but less accurate. The KP 31 has a much heavier barrel which makes it more accurate but also more tiresome on a soldier in the field who has to carry it around all day. I think the weight difference is about two and a half pound if i recall. They both have the same rate of fire from what i could tell and have the same magazine capacity with the 71 round drum (+1 chambered)

elvisp225 1 year ago
How accurate did you find this gun to be?
baronofcheese 1 year ago
@baronofcheese It is fairly accurate for a submachine gun because it is so heavy that it doesnt jump around much when shooting it. it also has a very fast rate of fire which i personally don't care for much, and it has a blade style sighting system. The barrel is not that tight of a fit into the receiver and barrel shroud and it can move some. This personal gun had shims cut to take out some of the slop in the barrel, and shroud fitment to the receiver which helps a great deal.
oldsrocketscientist 1 year ago
@oldsrocketscientist continued from above. I own a Sterling L2a3 which i consider to be the finest shooting sub machine gun made, and maybe im just used to how nice the Sterling is, but i found the Sterling to be more accurate than the suomi mostly because of rate of fire, better sights, smaller lighter and more ergonomic package, and im used to shooting the Sterling. One HUGE advantage the Suomi has over the sterling is mag capacity. wish the sterling had a 72 round magazine.
oldsrocketscientist 1 year ago

Looks like southern Utah, I was born in Finland and now live in Colorado, the KP31 has always fascinated me. Is yours a dealer sample? Thanks for posting this video, I might have to look into a semi-auto conversion KP-31.
123karismith 1 year ago
@123karismith Southern Utah is 70 miles away from us. The firearm is a dealer's sample that belongs to a business here. I wish i had a transferable one, but it is still nice to be able to shoot one. This one runs perfectly with Winchester white box 115 grain bulk pack, federal 124 grain, and independence 115 grain ammo in drums, coffin mags, or 36 round stick mags. It will not run steel cased wolf brand ammo.
oldsrocketscientist 1 year ago
@oldsrocketscientist "It will not run steel cased wolf brand ammo." I would sure hope that it would not eat cheap Russian ammo, this fine piece of Finnish war-craft should only be fed the best, without these KP31's Finland would be speaking Russian!!!! Suomi's have real Sisu! Igitur qui desiderat pacem praeparet bellum
