Well, clearly, I disagree and think Carly showed more "personality" than anyone else on the cast this year. The "front runners" like David Cook and David Archuleta have show almost zero personality, but clearly you think America is "voting" for this cast, so I'll leave it there. Since I have no clue as to what you think constitutes "personality" I guess we are coming from totally different places with regard to that. Cook's Idol stuff sounds absolutely nothing like his heavier pre-Idol sound.

Personality, in my opinion, doesn't mean being different and stuff. It means being true to yourself... Which (again in my opinion) Carly wasn't.

You could see Cook, Archie and MJ doing songs they could fall in love with and arranging them to suit their style. Carly didn't... I didn't feel connection between her and her songs.

and i think what your not getting here is that you dont have carly figured out. to YOU she is just a rocker chick, to her (and to her fans that know her) she is more. the reason you didnt get the connection from her on non rock songs is because you werent looking for her to do these kinds of songs. that doesnt mean she wasnt true to herself tho.

This was the only great singer in the cast this year. I suspect that America, the non-fangirl portion of America, knew it too because American Idol's ratings are in freefall. David Cook? Lol, his vocals aren't even close to Carly Smithson's...not even close.

You see, I LOVED HER. But I wouldn't buy her CD. I don't know what kind of tracks I'll find there. Who is she as an artist? Because if it's something like her pre idol stuff, HELL NO. Ballads?... her voice needs something more upbeat, as "Come Together" or "Jesus Christ"

She didn't know what kind of songs suited her best. She didn't know herself as well as DC knows himself. She wasn't as confident, as comfortable as he is. That's why she's not there.

Carly knows exactly "who she is", the problem for her is that Simon & Randy don't see her as that type of singer. The songs Carly really enjoyed from her Idol run were Crazy On You and Come Together. The rest of them were concessions to the theme of the week, whatever that might have been. Carly never saw Idol as a chance do try and define herself through a cover of somebody else's song. Carly used Idol as an opportunity to showcase her voice in a variety of genres and to this end did well.

You can define yourself through covers. The two Davids, Michael and Syesha did very well in this respect. Carly did excellently with Come Together, and you saw the judges LOOOVED her there. But then she started making "consessions" instead of trying to work those songs out in her style (as David Cook always did).

Clearly you have more faith in the "voting" process of this show than I do. I'm more or less of the mind that the show is a launch vehicle for select people, in this case the Davids, and the fan participation is strictly a gimmick to let the audience believe they are setting the agenda. Carly got sixth place and national exposure and I don't think anything within her control was going to change that outcome. I suspect Carly, Johns and Kristy already have albums ready to go in the wings too.

She could've done something as WOWing as Come Together . I was waiting for that, and that's the kind of artist she really is. But she chose to showcase her voice instead of her artist self (which would've showcased her voice too). And she actually recieved bad critics for that, and whenever she decided to do harder stuff, she WOWed everyone.

What I'm trying to say is that America, apparently, saw the same thing I did: The best vocals in all seven seasons, but no personality to reinforce them.

thats really untrue dude, she was extremely versatile, many different songs suited her. thats why she varied her performances from doin this one week and then doin Jesus Christ superstar the next, cuz she can handle different kinds of songs. she's was better at that than cook. and archuleta cant even do more than one key. Cook is worthy, but Carly got robbed, and deserved it more than him (he should be second or third to MJ)

she's not there cuz of the fuckin popularity vote, make no mistake.

Look... what I'm saying is that she wasn't true to herself. She's a rocker, a tough, funny girl. She knows that, we all knew that, we could see that... and yet, it didn't shine through on her songs.

She didn't convince me as an artist.

hell she actually went on record a couple of times saying that a big misconception of her is that she's a rocker chick because she has all these tattoos, when she didnt really see herself as only able to do that.

your more than welcome to like the rock side of carly, hell a lot of people do, but dont fool yourself into thinking thats all she can do. we do understand her. she is an amazing artist. if she's not your cup of tea so be it, but dont try to deny her brilliance.
