  • are they playing with an invisible ball?

  • @catcat33 Take it from an actual player. I don't usually grunt, however, when you're actually playing a point and it keeps getting harder to win it, you start to let off energy. It's not a malicious strategy, and for some people, that's just how they play. That lets you know that she takes every shot seriously. And on a side not, an exhibiton match and a WTA match are nothing alike. You don't take it as seriously because it's an exhibition. There's nothing on the line but to entertain the crowd.

  • seriously, if it wasn't Aravane Rezaï protest, no one would speak about michelle's scream

  • All of u that say that the screams are not a reflex are so fucking wrong! You guys understand shit about tennis!I play tennis and i have already practice with her and its something that she cant control when she s focus on playing good tennis. Its inside her! And for the assholes that think that a exibition match is the same of a wta match i ll tell you something:In a exibithion match u can be relaxed and enjoy what u re doing, u dont need to focus, thats why she doesnt scream in exibithon match

  • Michelle didn't make ANY noise when she played Serena at Wimbledon this year.

  • Ya, because she was warned...

  • As its described this was an exhibition match, so her efforts were not the same as would be in a WTA match... leave her alone, she will be a great tennis player...

  • am sorry bt how cn u play tennis and be quiet?? lool if ur quiet ur either dead or playin badly and these are pros i really agree with u COOLIOMAXIMUS1

  • Grita à vontade, Michelle, Portugal não se importa!

  • giler punyo video telampau pendek mna ble nak njoy pukima, sial kamurang. toto!!!!

  • aih ni video ni pendek giler mana ble nak enjoy pukima, sial kamurang

  • They may not have strong mics on the court either... She may be grunting louder than we're hearing.

  • nah she clearly cheats when she screams

  • who cares! I LOVE HER GRUNT

  • who cares! I LOVE HER GRUNT

  • haha i love this commentator every time a good point goes down he goes"mmmm"lol!

  • who cares if she grunts on purpose or not. she is a pro and if her grunting is cheating because its distracting then everyone else sucks because if they are pros then they should be able to play under any circumstance. leave her alone she can do whatever she wants. stop hating because your not a pro.

  • well all you people are complaining about these chicks playing tennis i just couldnt keep my eyes off jie zheng..WOW:O and de brito is kinda ugly and im 16 too so dont go around thinking im a perve!! haha

  • europe kills asia anyday :P

  • well defenitely not today haha and im reffering to you..sharapova 09' haha

  • It just clearly shows that she's using her grunts nowadays as pure gamesmanship end of story.

  • Yes, Jie Zheng

  • does anybody know against whom de brito played in this game??

    was it jie zheng?

  • off course taht means she wasnt doin her best, exactly !

go de broto fuck the rest ur the best !

go to hell u son of a bitches haters !

  • When a tennis match is quiet and no one is grunting it seems like they arent tryin hard enough for me. I wanna hear that power and if u cant concentrate when people make noise then u suck lol

  • Not trying hard enough?

This kind of ear-splitting, high-decibel grunting is a relatively recent phenomenon started by Monica Seles in the early 90s. Very few great players have done it (with the exception of Seles and the Williams sisters)

  • kind of agree with you pandaman260

  • yay!

  • its amazing that there are a lot of people who are angry and hate her and say she doesnt have talent she is 16 and is on top 100 of course she is talented!

  • Grunt is cheating? Stupid question... Dont like to watch this games? Change channel... WTF IGNORE ALL THIS BITCHING... It seems like she´s the only player in the world that sreams at every stroke...Keep going Michelle

  • Off course she can!! She is a cunning player who has not talent and is trying to grab media attention by making a lot of noise. What they should do is penalise her when she disturbs other players (take a point from her) or better totally IGNORE HER!! That will hurt her even more.

  • get a life man...

  • It's gamesmanship and blatant cheating. Should be banned. Only ever watch the men play now as watching the women is just unbearable.

  • She knows she grunts and she clearly does it at least partly on purpose.

  • Yeah, right! But her strokes aren't half as powerfull as if they were if she was indeed giving her kiai, releasing the energy that allows her to give her very best! Why would energy release be unethical? Because this is a snob-only sport? Why do the audience have to remain silent? Christ, are they trying to save a life? Golf is the same thing.. Is it unethical for a crowd to be shouting and chanting and booing when a player is about to shoot a decisive penalty kick?

  • Came to see this like tennis ?? I like the Asian backhands stability, and baseline very much, even she is doublehanded ! Look like she could do this all day long. Just my type, Babe´! ( Tennis´ly seen ) Maby the low kinetic, is one of the reason.

  • "And Martina Navratilova, winner of 59 Grand Slam titles and a stoic non-grunter, believes it's a diversionary tactic. She recently said that grunting was a form of cheating and should be banned, because it masks the sound of the ball on the racket - something that top opponents read to their advantage." --- I honestly believe she is doing it as a tactic to put off her opponents. It's unnecessary and I'm sure she will 'magically' be able to stop if it's ever banned.

  • WOW cat....just unbelivable that you have embarked on this journey to bad mouth Michelle everywhere now since Zheng lost against her in RG!

I can tell that you're young and got a real trauma out of this....I feel sorry for you, actually. But don't worry, you'll grow wiser and learn from your mistakes...

  • "Her excessive screaming gives her an unfair advantage over her opponents." WTH with this argument? Unfair advantage?? So I guess Serena and Venus should be banned from tennis, physically they have strength and power like men,so they have unfair advantage against women, Sharapova also screams, lets ban her too...everyone's just picking on the girl because:

    A) she's only 16 and she's winning where and when she wasn't supposed to win...B) she's not american nor russian

  • You got it REALLY well there!

  • I'd go a step further and say that B) she's portuguese. Or shall I remind you guys of the Portuguese football national team? Or even Nelson Evora, the olympic gold medallist for triple jump? Or maybe Obikwelu who was "hated" for making too many false starts (when he didn't do it on purpose and when he corrected it he still won..)? Give us a break! We're a small country, but we have great potential!

  • This has nothing to do with her being Portuguese. I love Portugal! MLdB is already an excellent player at 16 and will get even better. The screaming distracts attention from her game, and she can control that. She doesn't have to allow herself to be billed as a freak show. She needs to let her game do her talking for her.

  • As for why she grunts louder on WTA tournaments.. I think it might be due to nerves and pressure. I myself make more noise when I'm stressed out. She is young, I would bet her grunting will soften when she gets older.

  • There is NO POINT in voluntarily screaming during a match. Anyone who plays tennis knows that if you force yourself to scream every hit, it would only mess up your own rhythm. To accuse her of cheating because of her grunt doesn't really make sense. I also hate grunters and hate her style of play. But people should not accuse her of cheating because of it.

  • Give me a break, what's the difference between an exhibition match and a WTA match except that exhibition match doesn't give out ranking points?

Clearly she knows that screaming is a way (and an unethical way at that) to help her win a match.

  • It is simply not convincing that her exaggerated screaming is a ''reflex''. And according to my knowledge of reflex action, if screaming is her reflex action, she should scream in both WTA and exhibition matches. Sadly, she just screams in the WTA tour and this proves that it is not a reflex action but a voluntary and intended action.

  • Some people also noted that she can be completely quiet in practice courts.

I may judge her again when she can tone down her scream, but right now my impression of her is only negative.

  • @fiendish23 The intensity and the importance of the game, at least clearly for her, is completely different whether she's playing in WTA, an exhibition match or merely practicing. I don't see how that wouldn't influence her level of concentration, her level of anxiety, her effort, her exertion, etc. If grunting or screaming, whatever you want to call it, is a reflexion of that, then yes, sometimes she will scream more, sometimes less. Is it allowed? Yes. Is it annoying? Definitely.

  • you are an asshole who has never play a sport in your life, if you do you will notice that thos kind of scream are NOT a natural response of the body to the hit, the lenght and the time when she does it is something completely new in tennis and annoying. Scream is a reflex? cmon, she is just a kid and need some mater teaching, and a few slap on her face to make her understand.

  • Did you create your account only to do this kind of comments.

Hum!!! I think we have here a envious girl!!

Of course she will learn how to scream to do not hurt your sensible ears.

  • no i dont, i have my account a long time ago

    im not a girl

i dont see her play, and i wouldnt cause she scream, so she dont hurt my ears, just piss me off

so the 3 things you say, are all wrong, congrats for beeing so smart and right

  • @catcat33 Would you play an exhibition match the same way you would play a WTA? Would your concentration level be the same, your tension and anxiety be equal? Would you risk injuries the same, invest the same effort, give it all you got all the time every single shot for an exhibition match? Maybe you would, but I don't think professional players with so much more at stake than simply proving a point on youtube would.

  • @catcat33 two words FUCK YOU. The girl is trying she's bloody young, what did you do with your life at 15 years you bloody piece of shit. People like you are the haters who are on this earth to balance the ecosystem and perform no other task, jeez picking on a kid GET A BLOODY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • EVER SINCE I HEARD HER SCREAM EVEN now I CAN TELL she's JUST SUPPRESSing it AND WAITING TO EXIT HER MOUTH STRIKING FEAR IN ALL HEARTS. Maybe she's screamed her lungs out already. I WATCH TENNIS FOR THE PEACEFUL FEELING OF CLASS IT BRINGS. SURE THERES A SLIGHT BATTLE HAPPENING USUALLY AND THE GIRLS ARE ON EDGE OCCASIONALLY BUT IT NEVER SOUNDS LIKE A MURDER SCENE. This could actually be a publicity stunt, I wish she would stop I dread the yelps and the crys way over the top

  • She is also VERY good - get over the grunting and beat her fair and square or shut it. Her opponents only seem to complain when they start losing. And they are losers, having to make up an excuse for losing to a 15 year old.

What no one wants to admit is that she is every bit as good as Seles was at this age.

  • She recently lost, and the winner and others do have a valid point. Her yelling/screaming/grunting is excessive, and unnecessary. She's also grunting here, but nowhere near as loud as in other clips I saw of her. I can bet that if you were playing against her, you'd be quick to complain yourself.

  • Her excessive screaming gives her an unfair advantage over her opponents. It intimidates and distracts them. If she wants people to admit she's good, cut that screeching and beat her opponents in a fair way.

  • @catcat33 So you mean that for instance, Sharapova, or even currently #1 Williams are really not that good, they just happen to win more because their particular kind of grunts are more intimidating and distracting to opponents? Give me a break, the kid is very good for her age despite the grunting and annoying screaming. How do you suggest WTA sanctions this? By decibels? By a ratio between dB in practice vs. dB in competition? Her opponents need to start focusing on their own game more.

  • @catcat33 YOu say that is unfair???ahahah you re ridiculous, everybody can scream... If the other players dont wont to screamt that their problem!

  • @kikoairsofter yeah right, both players should scream their lungs out every match...and spectators should endure that noise non stop for hours. You can pay people to watch a match like that.

  • she sounds like an injured animal

  • The screams are there -- they just aren't as sharp on the audio as the sound of the racquets striking the ball. And they are long, lasting nearly the arrival of the ball at her opponent. This video actually supports the criticism of her.

  • I watched her LIVE, and I'm pretty sure that her screams are JUST LIKE THIS

  • Err....no. The volume is much, much smaller. Back then, I don't even know why people are making a big deal of her grunt.

But then, she didn't need to scream, because this is an exhibition match.

  • LOL? That's like a minute of an entire match.

Pretty sure she screamed the hell out on many points there.

  • I have the whole match, do you want it?

  • Ahahahaha.

  • She grunted at this level throughout the whole match, I just randomly cut some points out.
