"a cover of The Merseys"....which was a cover of "the McCoys". something i just discovered tonight - never knew about the mersey's version. i've thought all these years it was a david bowie song - he perfected it, for sure. i checked out the McCoys version - not terrible, when put in context. "pop" band at the fringe/beginning of garage rock straight outta indiana/the midwest. still, i will never forgive that band for "hang on sloopy". ugh. it'll be stuck in my head now for days.

Pinups is a great record! I read he tried to get back some of his publishing rights from the label/publisher and they wouldn't budge. So, in a "I'll show them" moment, he did all cover versions on this album with songs held by different publishers so his label/publisher wouldn't get any income on the publishing end. He did this to fulfill his contractual obligation and to force his record label into sharing future publishing on songs he wrote and apparently it worked. In the end, he got what he
