  • i love those little hints towards the play:p 'Not all woman Leonard, not all women."

  • Not all women Leonard. Not all women.

  • What?? His 'Hamlet' is NOT dire!!

  • BILLIE PIPER

  • Ok, the second Damian sprayed 'himself' I lost it.

  • Just a warning to anyone who is watching this instead of reading the book I suggest you watch the version with Emma Thompson as Beatrice as it almost sticks exactly to the original play. But then watch this because it's really funny :)

  • @itsNOTaSALAD

i agree entirely. Kenneth Branagh's directing is impeccable as always, the on-screen interactions of him and Emma Thompson are to die for :)

  • @janistonbest As always?! His Hamlet is dire x.x

  • @MalsLeftEye

mmmm, arguably :D "as usual" better? :)

  • @janistonbest Much. Although after having seen Thor I'm not so sure any more!

  • @janistonbest As always?! His Hamlet is dire x.x

  • @janistonbest As always?! His Hamlet is dire x.x

  • what year was this in

  • @TomLawson11

do you mean when this was released? i think they showed it on the BBC 2005 or 2006.

  • Good film :)

  • I know that Damian Lewis is also in "Your Highness", but to find out that the guy who plays hapless manservant Courtney is also in this?! SCORE!!!!

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! As an English teacher, THANK YOU!

  • Beatrice as a cheese commentator on Wessex local TV. If Shakespeare had thought of that, he would have used it too.

  • @thallassocracy To taste or not to taste...

Now THAT is the question! ;)

  • Holy shit! Rose Tyler is the weather girl. she must be stuck in time without the doctor :) nah, I know it's Billie Piper. She's epic and seriously hot

  • I had to watch this video for my Shakespeare class homework...

  • @amandavannie They asked you to watch this for Shakespeare homework? Why it is not Shakespeare?

  • Billie Piper's adorable. :>

  • i was recently in much ado and cause we're quite young my drama teacher suggested watching this to get our characters and their background a bit more.. my beatrice went on to get a lot of laughs and a good review ;D

  • I loved all the Shakespeare retold. :D Favorite is the taming of the shrew!

  • Sarah Parish and Emma Thompson: BEST BEATRICES EVER!!!

  • i love you for uploading this.

  • hehehee "not aall women leonard... not aall..."

  • Billie Piper is my fave actress :)

  • haha lol at school we are doing about this and we watched this one and the one in shakepreres time lol xx im such a nerd why am i watching it tonight lol xx but i just love it xx

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you so very, very much for sharing this. :)))) It's been YEARS since I've been able to rewatch this!

  • Thankyou so much for posting this.

    Muchly Appreciated

    x

  • thanks so much! i have been looking for this everywhere. it is sooo funny!

  • Damian Lewis :P

  • i love this so much.

  • Love the movie... but Tom Jones singing reminds me of grandmother and all my maiden, spinster, & widowed aunts gathering around the TV set on Friday (or ? Sat.) nights when I was in residence (nursing) - I had permission to spend days off at my grandparents. Tom Jones in 1969-72 was like listening to an old "crooner" like Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby. (tho' he did sing with Elvis & THAT was appealing! Tom has such a magnificent voice but I shall never recover from the images of '69-72!

  • lol, im just watcching this so i dont have to read the book

  • @MaxBurnout1200 ha ha lazy lazy u have to watch the actual Shakespearean to understand the book

  • Margaret reminds me of a young Margot Kidder

Thanks for uploading, great, funny rewrite! Love the music, Tom Jones ha ha

  • I meant Beatrice, played by Sahar Parrish, reminds me of Margot Kidder from the Superman movies with Christopher Reeves

  • i like this version, its cool :)

  • rose tyler is in this

  • Billie Piper :L

    ROFLMAO

  • "Hero...how do you just know about the weather!?" LOL love him XD

  • @fuzziecat16 of course it is in modern setting but still the flow of story is like the original

  • I'm not a fan of the Shakespeare Retold series in general as the adaptations didn't really work for me, but this is actually very faithful to the play except for Hero growing some ovaries in the end, but that's an improvement as far as I'm concerned.

  • *hooray* for growing ovaries, as weird as it sounds!!! :)

thanks for commenting. thought i was a major improvement to the original story, too.

    --J

  • @GrainneMhaol I agree that adaptations of Shakespeare are tricky at best, and need MASTERFUL direction to pull off if you're going to update it.

    This was.

And, if you haven't seen it- the "Taming of the Shrew" one is astoundingly well done and faithful to the concept as well... a bit too "modern" in parts, but pretty good overall, and the actress that plays Kate is PERFECT.

Here's an American for BBC's "Shakespeare Retold" and the Master in general!

  • @obiwanobiwan13 I did see Taming of the Shrew and to be honest it didn't appeal to me. It was probably very faithful to the source but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. There was something almost misogynistic about the portrayal of Kat and most of the characters were deeply unlikeable. I prefer this one.

  • @GrainneMhaol Actually, I think that "Shrew" is a highly feministic piece; the fact the male dominance is so overdone satirizes and criticizes it, while Kate is depicted as being a strong female (one of the first strong female characters, and earliest strong ones) and her end speech in the play, which is basically saying that men are great and women need to be subserviant, is so contrary that i may be speculatted that she's faking her concession so she might actually get her way- well, anyway...

  • @GrainneMhaol "'growing some ovaries"! I love it! I'm going to always say that now, you rock! Thank you for taking a giant leap for feminism in one comment

  • @GrainneMhaol To me, no adaptation of Shakespeare is faithful if they replace all the dialogue with modern English. Shakespeare *is* his dialogue.

This is just a ploy to get viewers who don't want to bother with studying the original interested. It panders to people who don't want to learn to appreciate the real thing.

  • @al1936ful To some, "Clueless" is the most faithful adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma" that is out there. It captures the spirit and wit of the original, despite the fact that it is set in a different time and place. Something can be considered faithful to the overall story while making changes that are appropriate. I think they did a great job of retaining the plot, characterisation and emotion of "Taming" while updating some of the more archaic elements.

  • @GrainneMhaol Lots of intelligent people (including myself) enjoyed this one, while appreciating the original. Please don't make assumptions about our motivations for doing so.

  • @GrainneMhaol the BBC 2009 version of Emma is the most faithful to the original!

  • @rbain007 As much as it pains me to say so, I prefer the Gwyneth Paltrow version. It has a light-heartedness that the 2009 version does not, while retaining the wit of the novel. I also prefer the chemistry between Paltrow and Jeremy Northam who is delicious as Knightley.

  • @GrainneMhaol I'm going to use that term from now on, "Growing ovaries," it's sounds better than growing some balls.

  • To the poster of the vid - if you were going to summarise this play in two lines, what would you say? Thanks in advance

  • omg, if they block the audio, that's gonna be piiiiissseed! >:( tards. tell me if it blocks, audio, in which case i will be forced to delete the vid, edit my original so that it cuts at the start and post again. cheers.

  • arrh, awesome, hope you enjoy!!

  • 1niloc3 - I know, me too. Shakespeare is always brilliant but 'The Taming of the Shrew' was a legendary retelling. I loved every minute of it. BBC have outdone themselves.

  • I'm really impressed with this Shakespeare Retold stuff! I was a little wary at first, thinking it was going to be some bad attempt to modernize such a great play, but it really is good! I'm watching it for a second time! XD

  • OMG where did u find this?? ive been looking for ages with no luck!

  • soames!

  • The BBC did an amazing job on this, it was brilliant and I really hope they show repeats again soon on TV.

  • totally!!! but this one is just a really great interpretation, i like this one too. i thought it'd be rubbish, but then i watched it and i was like "awesome!" but yeah, i agree, the kenneth brannagh one rocks!!! and wasnt that one 1993, not 2004? emma thompson played the role really well in that one ;)

  • yes it was a 1993 or 94 version, done back in the days when Brannah and Thomson were stillmarried, I think.Nonetheless this BBC version, together with MacBeth, are some f the bestinterpretations, not rubbish like 10 things i hate about you.
