Just a warning to anyone who is watching this instead of reading the book I suggest you watch the version with Emma Thompson as Beatrice as it almost sticks exactly to the original play. But then watch this because it's really funny :)
Holy shit! Rose Tyler is the weather girl. she must be stuck in time without the doctor :) nah, I know it's Billie Piper. She's epic and seriously hot
i was recently in much ado and cause we're quite young my drama teacher suggested watching this to get our characters and their background a bit more.. my beatrice went on to get a lot of laughs and a good review ;D
haha lol at school we are doing about this and we watched this one and the one in shakepreres time lol xx im such a nerd why am i watching it tonight lol xx but i just love it xx
Love the movie... but Tom Jones singing reminds me of grandmother and all my maiden, spinster, & widowed aunts gathering around the TV set on Friday (or ? Sat.) nights when I was in residence (nursing) - I had permission to spend days off at my grandparents. Tom Jones in 1969-72 was like listening to an old "crooner" like Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby. (tho' he did sing with Elvis & THAT was appealing! Tom has such a magnificent voice but I shall never recover from the images of '69-72!
I'm not a fan of the Shakespeare Retold series in general as the adaptations didn't really work for me, but this is actually very faithful to the play except for Hero growing some ovaries in the end, but that's an improvement as far as I'm concerned.
@GrainneMhaol I agree that adaptations of Shakespeare are tricky at best, and need MASTERFUL direction to pull off if you're going to update it.
This was.
And, if you haven't seen it- the "Taming of the Shrew" one is astoundingly well done and faithful to the concept as well... a bit too "modern" in parts, but pretty good overall, and the actress that plays Kate is PERFECT.
Here's an American for BBC's "Shakespeare Retold" and the Master in general!
@obiwanobiwan13 I did see Taming of the Shrew and to be honest it didn't appeal to me. It was probably very faithful to the source but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. There was something almost misogynistic about the portrayal of Kat and most of the characters were deeply unlikeable. I prefer this one.
@GrainneMhaol Actually, I think that "Shrew" is a highly feministic piece; the fact the male dominance is so overdone satirizes and criticizes it, while Kate is depicted as being a strong female (one of the first strong female characters, and earliest strong ones) and her end speech in the play, which is basically saying that men are great and women need to be subserviant, is so contrary that i may be speculatted that she's faking her concession so she might actually get her way- well, anyway...
@GrainneMhaol "'growing some ovaries"! I love it! I'm going to always say that now, you rock! Thank you for taking a giant leap for feminism in one comment
@GrainneMhaol To me, no adaptation of Shakespeare is faithful if they replace all the dialogue with modern English. Shakespeare *is* his dialogue.
This is just a ploy to get viewers who don't want to bother with studying the original interested. It panders to people who don't want to learn to appreciate the real thing.
@al1936ful To some, "Clueless" is the most faithful adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma" that is out there. It captures the spirit and wit of the original, despite the fact that it is set in a different time and place. Something can be considered faithful to the overall story while making changes that are appropriate. I think they did a great job of retaining the plot, characterisation and emotion of "Taming" while updating some of the more archaic elements.
@GrainneMhaol Lots of intelligent people (including myself) enjoyed this one, while appreciating the original. Please don't make assumptions about our motivations for doing so.
@rbain007 As much as it pains me to say so, I prefer the Gwyneth Paltrow version. It has a light-heartedness that the 2009 version does not, while retaining the wit of the novel. I also prefer the chemistry between Paltrow and Jeremy Northam who is delicious as Knightley.

just finished seeing The Taming of the Shrew Shakespeare-told and had to come find something else by BBC. hope this one is just as great as the other. thanks for posting.
1niloc3 - I know, me too. Shakespeare is always brilliant but 'The Taming of the Shrew' was a legendary retelling. I loved every minute of it. BBC have outdone themselves.
I'm really impressed with this Shakespeare Retold stuff! I was a little wary at first, thinking it was going to be some bad attempt to modernize such a great play, but it really is good! I'm watching it for a second time! XD
oh, i actually remember catching the end of MAAN on tv recently, forget what channel, and dont know about the rest of the series, im sure they do them sometimes..
Watched 'The Taming of The Shrew' and its perfect cast. Adored Rufus Sewell who was good looking wearing feminine clothing and doing great comedy. I also very much enjoyed 'Macbeth'. I'm very sure I will also enjoy 'Much Ado'. Casting for all 3 'Retolds' are perfect. Thank you for uploading this.
