  • Plz tell me where I can purchase this kit. I live in Michigan and when I called a few vw dealerships here, they acted as if they had no clue of what i was referring to. Or can you tell me where to get the "new handle with keys" PedroRacing is talking about in his comment to you. Need help ASAP. Thank You. Joyce

  • @jwjwwash1 go to webpage autohausaz (dot com) and you'll find door handles there for a good price. /John

  • Thank you, sir, you saved me a bunch of money. Even got the repair kit for $40 online. Nice.

  • @garion333 Awesome. You're welcome. /John

  • Thank God for this video, it saved me a lot of frustration!!!!!

  • @chris39004 Thanks. /John

  • I'm having the same problem with my VW golf 2000.. my key would turn all around but would not lock or unlock my car... how much would u think the shop would cost me if I bought that part from VW and paid someone to do it for me

  • @sinamallie No idea. Call the dealer and ask. Mechanics usually charge between $1 and $2 per minute. Probably cheaper to replace the entire handle if paying someone to do it. /John

  • Very tru.

  • Pease dont tell me you spent $60 on that ! Cus if you did that was fckn dumm! you can get a new handle with keys for $20 free shipping .

  • @PedroRacing23 I didn't want to have two keys: one for the ignition, trunk & other door and a different key for that door or doors. I'm not that cheap.

  • you know what is funny, that this took one day for you, imagine how much time will take for me :D...when you start reparin this it was daylight and finished on dark :-)

  • @ionutzis If I remember correctly, I took it apart one day and the wife then went to VW to buy the kit. Then I put it in another day. I hope you can do it in an hour or two. /John

  • This video saved me about $200. Everything went perfectly. Thanks!

  • @VBRunn3r Awesome. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • My brothers locking cylinder in his car came out also but now he can't find it. Is there a way to get the pins needed for the new cylinder?

  • @sh115067 I don't know... maybe ask the VW parts department if you can buy new pins. Then file them to the proper length to fit the key. /John

  • Wow thanks. My last hook broke yesterday so i've ordered two new handles on ebay ($20 for both of 'em).. Now I know how to mount it! :)

  • @orsenn Awesome.

  • Thanks a million for your how-to video. Freezing temperatures and ice resulted in a broken lock. The parts department found the package with your part number and the install went well. (minus the flying spring that took forever to find).

Does VW sell those small springs? Mine are pretty rough looking...

  • @oxygen454 You used to be able to buy all the parts (including springs) separately but now I believe you have to buy the kit. Best to ask the VW parts dept. Thanks and I'm glad the install went well. /John

  • Hi guys, I have a 95 golf gl and my door will not close. I think the latch mechanism is jammed or something. Also the cylinder type thing that the key goes in to comes out of my door. I'm more concerned about the door closing than the lock. In can't drive to work if my doors wont close right.

    Thanks

  • thanks for this info, got a replacement piece with a good hook from a junkyard jetta and fixed my lock in 15 min using this video. Thanks!

  • @petecc1 You're welcome. I'm glad the video helped. /John

  • Hey bearing,

I was wondering where I would purchase this kit from?

I live in Sydney, Australia and do not want to pay the mechanic a stupid amount of money to install.

    Thanks

  • @tozacs I got mine from the VW dealership parts department. That's the only place I know where to buy it. /John

  • @bearing01 Thanks heaps, just finished it then.

you saved me a few hundred dollars doing it myself.

  • @tozacs That's awesome. You're welcome. Glad I could help. /John

  • This mechanism is not representative of my American 2002 Cabrio. There is no 'loop' on the back of my lock cylinder, and therefore all of the parts connecting afterwards in the mechanism are different. This does happen sometimes with VW's. Just wanted to point out that there are different mechanisms out there, and this video, although very helpful to some, does not cover all Mk3.5 Cabrio's.

  • This vid is awesome - anyone have advice on a cheaper sourcing for the parts? Given that this used to be $20 in parts and is now $60 in parts - that's messed up.

  • @Meatwad650 Thanks for the comment. I have no idea where to get the parts cheaper - other than a junk yard.. but then you're getting the old style part that will probably break again. /John

  • Brilliant video, very helpful. Thank you very much!

  • @wakeup2nwo You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • I replaced the whole unit rather than carry out a repair but the tips on removal and installing the replacement (mechanism ( particularly partial turning of the key and putting pressure on the handle ) was most useful. Much appreciated. Thanks once again. Chris ( UK )

  • @comfortablynumb1949 Thanks /John

  • Fantastic guide man, I'll be using it as soon as my new handles arrive.

  • @DementedGael Thanks /John

  • I ran into this exact problem yesterday, but both lock cylinders are shot/the keys fell out. What do I have to do to go about getting new ones? Do I have to get a new vw key for the doors that are diff from my ignition key? Thanks

  • @irollerblade89 You can get entire door handles with new keys online at autohausaz for $25 each. /John

  • @bearing01 ... thanks you just saved me some money..

  • @mtnbkr4ever Awesome. Thanks /John

  • All the information I needed. You rock! Thanks.

  • @kchoppin You're welcome. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • Thanks for the video, this is what I'm looking for.. how to remove the handle :) I have a polo, a bit different handle but I believe it uses the same method... Haven't done it though, still waiting for the inner part.. thanks!

  • @majestixblue Hope this video helps. Good luck. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • @bearing01 yep, it helped for sure.. I was thinking to open the door panel and access any screw from the back/inside.. apparently only from this 1 screw it opens easily. My polo doesn't even need to key to be turned, I think they have simplified the design, just slide and pull out. I think I'm done with the wole thing in less than 15minutes.. Thanks again!

  • @majestixblue That's great. Glad you got it working again. /John

  • what do you do when the lock mechanism is already broken and completely loose inside, how do you take out the handle?

  • @Flamingo001 I don't know. My lock mechanism was completely broken and I just took mine off with this procedure. /John

  • @bearing01 Thank you so much! It came out anyway really easy. I fixed it myself just right now. Saves me a lot of money and especially time. Only spent about $31.00 for the latch including the door lock. It just took a bit of trying to get the latch back in but now I know how it's done:-)

  • @Flamingo001 That's awesome man. Yea, takes a little fooling around to get back in, but great that you got her fixed. Keep your eye on the other door lock now. That one will probably break soon also. If you can get the parts for that one for cheap it may be a good idea to change that one soon also. /John

  • Great video! Thanks for posting! $58 for the part. 30 minutes to install.

  • @mlehnertz Thanks. /John

  • wow what a huge pain in the ass! thank you engineers for fucking us over once again!

    bearing you are awesome!

  • @hendrxson Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • First, thanks so much for the great info! you are an asset! Secondly, we were able to get new handles for 12.00 apiece FYI of the net and rekey them with the old tumblers like in the vid! There are many vw parts sites online! happy hunting!

  • @sailorchaos1274 That's great. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • Wow this helped me alot! Thanks.

  • @kevinwong530 You're welcome. Glad I could help. /John

  • hi,i have 2 cabrios,1 has the same locks as these, the 2nd is slightly newer and doesnt have the hook arrangement as described, rather a rounded end with a paddle? do have any hints?

  • @jiminbmth Sorry, I'm not familiar with any other VW's besides this one. I suggest taking it apart to see what the problem is. Ask the guy at the VW parts desk about any kits that may be available. Ask to talk with a mechanic, they sometimes will tell you what you have to do. Good luck /John

  • What do I do if the entire lock cylinder of my car comes out when I put the key into the drivers side door lock? I have a 1999 Cabrio, and don't know where to begin. You just seemed like the most knowledgeable person i've come across! Thanks for your time.

  • @toriwalding That means you have this exact problem. It is the little loop and hook on the inside end of the cylinder that keeps the whole thing inside the handle. When the hook breaks off, the key can pull the entire cylinder out. Go to VW and tell them you want this kit and good luck. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • Just want to say thanks again. I finally done both side of my VW Jetta 97. I was very excited! Just a hint that I found the number on each of the key inserts. I found it helpful to writing down the numbers in their slot sequence prior transfer the keys to the new cylinder. I was chasing a few little springs too.... Thanks so much for the posting once again!!!

  • @joy96815 Thanks for letting us know about your success. Happy it worked out for you. Good stuff. /John

  • @joy96815 Hi

Also just used this DIY with my 96 Vento/Jetta 1.6 Mk3. It worked a treat! Many many thanks. the part cost 300NOK (Im in Norway) thats about 53 bucks. Miles cheaper than a repair bill though

  • @Cocoosi That's awesome. Glad it worked out for you. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • will this also work on a VW Polo 1998 (6n)? Thank you for this video, really helpfull!

  • @wodoguy I don't know. I'm not familiar with that car. I would expect most of the VW's of that time range probably have similar locks. /John

  • @bearing01 okay. I guess there is only one way to find out.. Im gonna give it a try when get back home from the holidays. Thanks for you help :-)

  • John, thanks so much for the video. Our cylinder actually snapped with the key in it and one of the tiny springs is missing. I am assuming they are necessary and their is no way we are every going to find it. Do you know where we can get one? Once the keys have been transferred to the new cylinder should it be able to turn when your key is in it. Ours does not and I fear we have placed the cylinder keys is incorrectly. Or is it because of the missing spring? Anyway, Happy Holidays/Claude

  • @cjstarbuc Claude, Yes, the cylinder should turn in the bore when the car key is inserted in the cylinder. If you lost a key-spring then I would just leave that particular key out of the cylinder when you assemble it. If you got the key order messed up you should be able to find their proper location by trial & error. Inserting the car key in the cylinder should make all cylinder keys to retract flush with the cylinder. Thanks for watching & commenting and happy Holidays. /John

  • Thanks so much. I'm about to do this and this vid has saved me a couple of hours of messing around!

  • @jlfoobar You're welcome. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • Fantastic thanks!

  • @Mr80Miles You're welcome. Hope it helps. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • great video...thx

  • @aleksandarm7 Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • This is one of the best instructional helping videos available for such need. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience. Very helpful!

  • @royurrego Thank you for watching and commenting. /John

  • This is an excellent video. Thank you for the help!

  • @drbizzocox You're welcome. Thank You for watching and commenting. /John

  • @drbizzocox Thanks for uploading this vid - very useful. A further tip, if you lose one of the little springs (like I did), just assemble the lock without that 'plate'. Putting the plate in without the spring will appear to work at first, but the next time you use the lock it won't work any more!

  • @fatmal2 Great tip. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • Thanks! Helped me lots.

  • @sotohj You're welcome. Thank you for watching and commenting. /John

  • I agree , it's an excellent video. I am going to try the process soon myself too. Still shopping for parts for my right and left side 97 jetta door locks.

  • @joy96815 Thank you for watching and commenting. More VW repair vids to come. /John

  • Excellent video, very helpful, thanks for taking the time to post a video on it :)

  • @mattd28 You're welcome. I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • great video. this was a HUGE help. thanks!

  • Thank you! This is really helpful.

  • @dogbuffs You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • my new best friend.... seems easy enough. will try soon! my old mk3 worked until one day the cylinder popped out. i just purchased another mk3 and the drivers door does not work so im sure this will fix it!! many kudos to you

  • @leperkuan I'm sure this is your problem. It's an easy fix as you can see. It happened on both my doors so I'm sure it's a very common problem. Try to find the first set of parts at your VW dealer and do the fix for cheap. Don't go with a new door handle. If you do you will end up spending a lot more and have to carry around a 2nd set of keys. Stay tuned. I plan on doing more VW videos. My next VW job will be a timing belt, spark plugs and radiator hoses. /John

  • what parts N should be for VW passat 1998?

  • @wla7777 I'm not sure of the part numbers for the 1998 Passat. If the handle looks the same then it is likely the same parts that I used. Best go to the dealer and ask for the same type of kit. /John

  • Yea... I had to replace the door handle on the corolla... Not an easy job.
