Plz tell me where I can purchase this kit. I live in Michigan and when I called a few vw dealerships here, they acted as if they had no clue of what i was referring to. Or can you tell me where to get the "new handle with keys" PedroRacing is talking about in his comment to you. Need help ASAP. Thank You. Joyce
I'm having the same problem with my VW golf 2000.. my key would turn all around but would not lock or unlock my car... how much would u think the shop would cost me if I bought that part from VW and paid someone to do it for me
@sinamallie No idea. Call the dealer and ask. Mechanics usually charge between $1 and $2 per minute. Probably cheaper to replace the entire handle if paying someone to do it. /John
@PedroRacing23 I didn't want to have two keys: one for the ignition, trunk & other door and a different key for that door or doors. I'm not that cheap.
you know what is funny, that this took one day for you, imagine how much time will take for me :D...when you start reparin this it was daylight and finished on dark :-)
@ionutzis If I remember correctly, I took it apart one day and the wife then went to VW to buy the kit. Then I put it in another day. I hope you can do it in an hour or two. /John
Thanks a million for your how-to video. Freezing temperatures and ice resulted in a broken lock. The parts department found the package with your part number and the install went well. (minus the flying spring that took forever to find).
Does VW sell those small springs? Mine are pretty rough looking...
@oxygen454 You used to be able to buy all the parts (including springs) separately but now I believe you have to buy the kit. Best to ask the VW parts dept. Thanks and I'm glad the install went well. /John
Hi guys, I have a 95 golf gl and my door will not close. I think the latch mechanism is jammed or something. Also the cylinder type thing that the key goes in to comes out of my door. I'm more concerned about the door closing than the lock. In can't drive to work if my doors wont close right.
This mechanism is not representative of my American 2002 Cabrio. There is no 'loop' on the back of my lock cylinder, and therefore all of the parts connecting afterwards in the mechanism are different. This does happen sometimes with VW's. Just wanted to point out that there are different mechanisms out there, and this video, although very helpful to some, does not cover all Mk3.5 Cabrio's.
This vid is awesome - anyone have advice on a cheaper sourcing for the parts? Given that this used to be $20 in parts and is now $60 in parts - that's messed up.
@Meatwad650 Thanks for the comment. I have no idea where to get the parts cheaper - other than a junk yard.. but then you're getting the old style part that will probably break again. /John
I replaced the whole unit rather than carry out a repair but the tips on removal and installing the replacement (mechanism ( particularly partial turning of the key and putting pressure on the handle ) was most useful. Much appreciated. Thanks once again. Chris ( UK )
I ran into this exact problem yesterday, but both lock cylinders are shot/the keys fell out. What do I have to do to go about getting new ones? Do I have to get a new vw key for the doors that are diff from my ignition key? Thanks
Thanks for the video, this is what I'm looking for.. how to remove the handle :) I have a polo, a bit different handle but I believe it uses the same method... Haven't done it though, still waiting for the inner part.. thanks!
@bearing01 yep, it helped for sure.. I was thinking to open the door panel and access any screw from the back/inside.. apparently only from this 1 screw it opens easily. My polo doesn't even need to key to be turned, I think they have simplified the design, just slide and pull out. I think I'm done with the wole thing in less than 15minutes.. Thanks again!
@bearing01 Thank you so much! It came out anyway really easy. I fixed it myself just right now. Saves me a lot of money and especially time. Only spent about $31.00 for the latch including the door lock. It just took a bit of trying to get the latch back in but now I know how it's done:-)
@Flamingo001 That's awesome man. Yea, takes a little fooling around to get back in, but great that you got her fixed. Keep your eye on the other door lock now. That one will probably break soon also. If you can get the parts for that one for cheap it may be a good idea to change that one soon also. /John
First, thanks so much for the great info! you are an asset! Secondly, we were able to get new handles for 12.00 apiece FYI of the net and rekey them with the old tumblers like in the vid! There are many vw parts sites online! happy hunting!
hi,i have 2 cabrios,1 has the same locks as these, the 2nd is slightly newer and doesnt have the hook arrangement as described, rather a rounded end with a paddle? do have any hints?
@jiminbmth Sorry, I'm not familiar with any other VW's besides this one. I suggest taking it apart to see what the problem is. Ask the guy at the VW parts desk about any kits that may be available. Ask to talk with a mechanic, they sometimes will tell you what you have to do. Good luck /John
What do I do if the entire lock cylinder of my car comes out when I put the key into the drivers side door lock? I have a 1999 Cabrio, and don't know where to begin. You just seemed like the most knowledgeable person i've come across! Thanks for your time.
@toriwalding That means you have this exact problem. It is the little loop and hook on the inside end of the cylinder that keeps the whole thing inside the handle. When the hook breaks off, the key can pull the entire cylinder out. Go to VW and tell them you want this kit and good luck. Thanks for commenting. /John
Just want to say thanks again. I finally done both side of my VW Jetta 97. I was very excited! Just a hint that I found the number on each of the key inserts. I found it helpful to writing down the numbers in their slot sequence prior transfer the keys to the new cylinder. I was chasing a few little springs too.... Thanks so much for the posting once again!!!
Also just used this DIY with my 96 Vento/Jetta 1.6 Mk3. It worked a treat! Many many thanks. the part cost 300NOK (Im in Norway) thats about 53 bucks. Miles cheaper than a repair bill though
John, thanks so much for the video. Our cylinder actually snapped with the key in it and one of the tiny springs is missing. I am assuming they are necessary and their is no way we are every going to find it. Do you know where we can get one? Once the keys have been transferred to the new cylinder should it be able to turn when your key is in it. Ours does not and I fear we have placed the cylinder keys is incorrectly. Or is it because of the missing spring? Anyway, Happy Holidays/Claude
@cjstarbuc Claude, Yes, the cylinder should turn in the bore when the car key is inserted in the cylinder. If you lost a key-spring then I would just leave that particular key out of the cylinder when you assemble it. If you got the key order messed up you should be able to find their proper location by trial & error. Inserting the car key in the cylinder should make all cylinder keys to retract flush with the cylinder. Thanks for watching & commenting and happy Holidays. /John
This is one of the best instructional helping videos available for such need. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience. Very helpful!
@drbizzocox Thanks for uploading this vid - very useful. A further tip, if you lose one of the little springs (like I did), just assemble the lock without that 'plate'. Putting the plate in without the spring will appear to work at first, but the next time you use the lock it won't work any more!
I agree , it's an excellent video. I am going to try the process soon myself too. Still shopping for parts for my right and left side 97 jetta door locks.
my new best friend.... seems easy enough. will try soon! my old mk3 worked until one day the cylinder popped out. i just purchased another mk3 and the drivers door does not work so im sure this will fix it!! many kudos to you
@leperkuan I'm sure this is your problem. It's an easy fix as you can see. It happened on both my doors so I'm sure it's a very common problem.
