Frozen Warnings has a story dating back to when Nico during the bombings of Berlin went with her mother to her grandfather's house; he was a station master in the countryside and there little Nico saw the trains bringing the jews to the concentration camps and they waved to her from the loopholes smiling, not knowing their future and there was snow everywhere : this is the origin of the song.
i was at this concert, there was about 20 people there, laughing loudly at her and walking out during the performance, its amazing that this gig has somehow survived and that people enjoy it now, i saw her play in manchester about 7 times, never to a full audience, no one cared, but she was always great
I saw her perform in the planetarium in Berlin on the 6th of June 1988. It was a lifetime experience! Later I learned that she felt sick after this concert and died a month later in Spain. So I assisted to her last concert. I was so baffled by her performance thatI was about to go to speak to her after the gig ended, but I din't. What a shame - maybe we would have got friends and she wouldn't have died.
@themixingitsession A beautiful, beautiful song. Mr Cale's version can still be found on google videos as the last few minutes of the 68 mins Nico Icon vid. The whole thing is worth watching
Haunting and beautiful. I recommend reading 'Nico the lies and loves of an icon' by Richard Witts. I couldnt put it down. It tells of Nico's life in Nazi germany right through the Andy Warhole years and beyond to her death. x A real tribute to an amazing artist
When asked about Jim Morrison, Nico said, "He told me that I should write songs for him and that he should write songs for me. One of them on the very first one - "Frozen Warnings." "Frozen Warnings" is about a hermit crossing the borderline...He was so much ashamed of his Christianity. He was a Jesus freak for a while. It was during the "Purple Haze" era."
Well, you know, it is rather a matter of public record that she became a sad and pathetic junkie in many ways, and she could have used help. Who can't use help, though?
One of the most beutiful songs ever written. It´s very easy to see the images of cloudy and frozen borderlines when listening to this. And look at her total concentration- she´s escaped somewhere in her own world. Touching.
Wow! Trawling through all the shit TV music channels earlier today I came across this. It was not the usual crap that MTV et al usually disgorges. I watched and watched and fell in love with it. I was familiar with Nico only through the Velvet Underground. But today I have discovered a GREAT song.
And you learned something I never knew until I'd been listening to the song for 30 yrs, namely that the first verse was "about Andy Warhol." I always pictured some medieval monk, stumbling over that "frozen borderline." In fact I still do. I liked Andy, but he is not what I want to think about when listening to this mysterious, haunting song.
She was referring to the song that she had just played, not 'Frozen Warnings'. Notice the she says "was". And the one that has the first verse about Andy Warhol is her song 'Innocent And Vain'. I know because I have a live album of where she makes that comment after finishing the song. It might even be the recording from this Manchester concert here.
Yes, a very nice song:). I don't like, to admit it, all the boasting and snob-talk from many in related scenes, a tendency to bash so many others. But the songs are great... There is also another nice version of this frozen warnings by John Cale. Again with him, sometimes I found his interviews arrogant and even foolish ("hiphop is the only future" and you as yourself why??) - but many songs are just wonderful! I even like the Cale-version more, coming from a film about Nico.
I've seen this tour, I guess was this tour, in Roma ages ago. We were no more than 100 people under a tend. It was a show that I'm sure nobody of these 100 people has forget. The obscurity of human soul has never been so fashionable as per Nico's music and voice. Unforgettable.

My favorite Nico song. Talk about obscure lyrics. Or obtuse. One of those.

Yeah, Nico was a heroin addict who died relatively young. I might also point out that she died in a cycling accident.

What's so sad about Nico is that she needed help and never got it and it caused severe suffering that she did not deserve.

You must be on glue to think that a heroin addict is normal. Or maybe you are mentally ill.

You better fucking believe it. She could smack Lou Reed & John Cale and still come out ahead. So much time, so much music to hear. Gosh.
