Trouble is, I don't buy the idea of Cat Power being a rum runner. Jay Farrar yes, Bobby Dylan certainly, but somebody as conventionally attractive as Cat Power could never pass of as an illegal alcohol merchant.
This version is too slow and boring compaired to Uncle Tupelo's version. Red Bird does a decent job with it as well. But this one is kinda lame. I'm probably just saying that because I'm a die hard Jay Farrar fan and you simply cannot beat perfection.
@kycarlson83 I'm sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree. As much as I like Uncle Tupelo's (and Dylan's) version(s), I think this particular song really shines as a slow, drawn out song like this, particularly because I've spent many lonley drunken nights slowly swaying back and forth to this vixen's wonderful version. It's a sad, depressing song, and I think she does it proper blues style. I can REALLY feel the emotions in hers. But hey, that's just me! To each their own.

people will hang me on a cross but i prefer that version better.. sorry bob this girl is charming and have a wonderfull voice cover is wonderfull and you're just an ugly jew
if you listen to Dylan's cover off of the Bootleg Series Vol. 1 it sounds like Dylan in fact had been a moonshiner for seventeen long years he was about 21 at the time and he gives it that pain filled feeling. his was definitely the best but Cat's is great also.
if you cant appreciate dylans version of this, uploader, then you really like your music watered down, and easy to take, rather than confronting and haunting. no disrespect to miss power
On the contrary poster! As a Dylan fan we're glad musicians still find inspiration and new creative ways to present his work. Bob himself was comfortable making controversial renditions of folk songs. Good song!
Yes, this is quite an inspired and dramatic rendition, but yet, quite far behind Bob Dylan's sublime version. This one is good art. Bob's, pure magic.
she is amazing ! sorry but i prefer Cat Power singing the song than Bob Dylan - her voice is so perfect and full with feelings .. she can make you travel and get lost inside yourself ..
she's battled with booze for a long time and is now firmly on the wagon. i guess when this song was recorded years ago she was in the rut. this is not emo poop. bob's version, is of course, better though.

The chick in the picture should pull on a string and let water pour all over her, like flashdance. Oh,I forgot the music is playing. That sounds like a woman singing a boring song. Like the picture though, if they would only rig up the string and water.
I just like the song, I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains, my grandfather was a moonshiner, pulled time for it, had a newspaper article make him seem like a hero, got old and died. Alll he left me was a taste for mooshine.
I grew up here in the blue ridge mts and the skill is passed down from father to son. My Great grand pa made it ,my grand pa made it and my dad made it.
i heard both this and dylan's version and i have to say this one is amazing. it is done with so deep feeling that i can't stop playing it again and again
its not even a real dylan song tools this version is meant to be wha tit is a pretty voice felt ...yes dylan is the man but cmon let girls have some fun
Overproducing a song with pretty music does not make up for the singer's monotonal lack of empathy for the writer's anguish and message. Might be good enough for a cabaret act, I suppose.
I'm very fond of Cat Power music, but even so I agree with your comment. Perhaps it is not a lack of empathy what makes this version so weak compared to Dylan's. I rather think its weakness comes from the fact that "Pop" (in a wide sense of the word) tends to make music "easier" to be listened... Nevertheless, there's something I like better in Chan's version, which is the last two verses: "When the bottle gets empty / Then life ain't worth the drown". (My english is not so good, I'm sorry)
i've read about her struggle with consumption. i'd think she would be able to empathize; check your facts people. perhaps it's just the singing style you don't like. youtube comments are so retarded most of the time...
I never agreed with the lack of empathy someone here spoke of. Anyway, it's true what you say about youtube comments. Sometimes anonimity isn't good at all for discussion.
Couldn't agree more olyguy2000, the lack of range delivered drastically decreases the power of the song. Cabaret is a perfect comparison, I can picture some sultry woman singing this in fishnets and a top-hat
pretty great. my personal favorite is done by Redbird. pretty much anything they do is quite stellar though.

It's good. Don't get me wrong, it's very good, and I worship Chan, really.
But there's something lacking about it. Feelings-wise.
Dylan just captured a kind of loneliness so perfectly, y'know?
It's a kind of depth that Chan doesn't possess. Not in this song, anyway.
