  • pretty great. my personal favorite is done by Redbird. pretty much anything they do is quite stellar though.

  • this guitar is mind-blowing, can't get enough of it!

  • I would marry this woman! If only to have her sing to me at night.

  • Trouble is, I don't buy the idea of Cat Power being a rum runner. Jay Farrar yes, Bobby Dylan certainly, but somebody as conventionally attractive as Cat Power could never pass of as an illegal alcohol merchant.

  • The redbird version is amazing. This one is too slow for my taste, but that's just me.

  • This version is too slow and boring compaired to Uncle Tupelo's version. Red Bird does a decent job with it as well. But this one is kinda lame. I'm probably just saying that because I'm a die hard Jay Farrar fan and you simply cannot beat perfection.

  • @kycarlson83 I'm sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree. As much as I like Uncle Tupelo's (and Dylan's) version(s), I think this particular song really shines as a slow, drawn out song like this, particularly because I've spent many lonley drunken nights slowly swaying back and forth to this vixen's wonderful version. It's a sad, depressing song, and I think she does it proper blues style. I can REALLY feel the emotions in hers. But hey, that's just me! To each their own.

  • I love her feet....and everything else.

  • Those that came before BOB check them out

    Rosco Holcomb

    Buell Kazee

they are both here on youtube both sung moonshiner.

  • I'm crazy about this song!!!!

  • This is amazing.

  • im in love with this version...

  • bugger off ok computer, THIS is the album of the 90s

  • Her voice soothes me. I just want her to sing lullabies to me at night. So I wouldn't be cruising youtube at 3am. Fuck.

  • epic..

  • I just don't believe that she was ever a moonshiner.

  • moon pix is my favorite cat power record. the instrumentals dirty three povided her are just amazing, such a slow-mo, kinda heroin-fueled vibe

  • if you listen to Dylan's cover off of the Bootleg Series Vol. 1 it sounds like Dylan in fact had been a moonshiner for seventeen long years he was about 21 at the time and he gives it that pain filled feeling. his was definitely the best but Cat's is great also.

  • shes the female version of morrissey...

  • heard this track for the first time on alternative radio late one night . was speechless. beautiful.

  • if you cant appreciate dylans version of this, uploader, then you really like your music watered down, and easy to take, rather than confronting and haunting. no disrespect to miss power

  • Now I'm confused. Is it a "traditional folk tune" or is it written by Bob Dylan in 1991?

  • @SimLego2000 came out on bootleg series 1-3 in 1991. recorded early sixties traditional composer

  • Good song amazing artist great cover but Bob Dylan's is the best but this is a great cover

  • These lyrics sounds weird in the mouth of a lady...

I prefer the Tallest Man on Earth's version

  • -----> just reminds me a lot

this slow, monotonous, melancholy rhythm....... you might be hypnotized....

  • she always does great covers.

  • bob dylan's version is always the best because it has the REAL feeling of the song. this one is second best.

  • @snowfairy13 i counter with uncle tupelo's version, and follow it with pink floyd's "bob dylan's blues"...

  • not bad rendition but roscoe holcolm is the best

  • On the contrary poster! As a Dylan fan we're glad musicians still find inspiration and new creative ways to present his work. Bob himself was comfortable making controversial renditions of folk songs. Good song!

  • Yes, this is quite an inspired and dramatic rendition, but yet, quite far behind Bob Dylan's sublime version. This one is good art. Bob's, pure magic.

    Thx 4 posting

    1

  • shes so hot in that picture

  • Does it sound to anyone else like a female Will Oldham trying to imitate an aeolian Uncle Tupelo?

  • You just don't believe that she's been a moonshiner

  • @tcontarino09 thats 'cause you don't know her

  • It's good. Don't get me wrong, it's very good, and I worship Chan, really.

But there's something lacking about it. Feelings-wise.

Dylan just captured a kind of loneliness so perfectly, y'know?

It's a kind of depth that Chan doesn't possess. Not in this song, anyway.

  • she is amazing ! sorry but i prefer Cat Power singing the song than Bob Dylan - her voice is so perfect and full with feelings .. she can make you travel and get lost inside yourself ..

  • This is a wonderful take on this classic traditional. Still, Uncle Tupelo's version of the song cannot be touched.

  • she's battled with booze for a long time and is now firmly on the wagon. i guess when this song was recorded years ago she was in the rut. this is not emo poop. bob's version, is of course, better though.

  • Sorry not the pain or feeling of Bob's version.

  • her toes are craaaazy :D

    i love this song.

  • @dramaticafantastica i love herrrrr toess :)

  • Oh and a mirror

  • I just like the song, I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains, my grandfather was a moonshiner, pulled time for it, had a newspaper article make him seem like a hero, got old and died. Alll he left me was a taste for mooshine.

  • 1. i wasn't saying this version was folk

    2. i'm glad you're learning how to insult things

  • yar thanks.

  • i agree

  • lol. how is this 'low-fi emo pop' in the slightest?

  • Comment removed

  • @Rawrzies the only emo poop here is you (your mother is emo)

  • This is really good, but if you can try to find the 2nd Street Rag Stompers version of this tune. I would say the Rag Stompers do it the best.

I like the eerie-ness of this version a lot.

  • eww.

  • This version blows compared to the dylan version. She sounds like a calf dying in a hail storm.

  • Although I cant agree with you kivlov thats pretty funny

  • I am a huge Bob Dylan fan, he is my favorite artist, I also LOVE Chan Marshall, I get so excited when I hear her do a cover of him.

Usually it isn't as good as his, but I must admit I like her version of this song better. Sad.

    =D

O! by the way, I love this photo of her, it's just so cool looking, I see it everywhere!

  • They did memphis blues great. but this was a butcher.

  • yer funny, you have not been around the sun very many times, is my guess probably think einstein was somebodies dog

  • why would I think einstein was a dog?

i think you are funnier than me :)

  • ya that's sexist - you don't think women could have made moonshine back in the day?? gimme a break

  • no I don 't doubt womens drinking abilities :)

it 's just that this song is about a kind of loneliness only a man can understand

i 'm sorry but it 's not sexist for me to say this

i 'm sure that there are lots of emotions women can feel wich i have never heard about :)

  • Believe it or not women too have the propensity to be alcoholics, and drown in the bottom of a bottle.

  • I grew up here in the blue ridge mts and the skill is passed down from father to son. My Great grand pa made it ,my grand pa made it and my dad made it.

  • Sa voix transcende les mots ; un vrai feu d'artifice de langueur, de fièvre...

  • je suis d'accord :)

  • Cool ! Quelqu'un qui comprend le français ! :-)

  • un peu ;)

  • I love cat power

  • A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

  • i heard both this and dylan's version and i have to say this one is amazing. it is done with so deep feeling that i can't stop playing it again and again

  • simplesmente excelente! a melhor versão sem dúvidas! arrasou demais! >D

  • i love this cover

  • I love Chan, but this just doesn't work. This song has to have some fireworks.

  • Rumbleseat (hot water musics chris wallard and chuck ragan) does a pretty mean version... but this is a very unique variation.. i like it.

  • its not even a real dylan song tools this version is meant to be wha tit is a pretty voice felt ...yes dylan is the man but cmon let girls have some fun

  • oh man this song melts me

  • Overproducing a song with pretty music does not make up for the singer's monotonal lack of empathy for the writer's anguish and message. Might be good enough for a cabaret act, I suppose.

  • internet tough guy

  • I'm very fond of Cat Power music, but even so I agree with your comment. Perhaps it is not a lack of empathy what makes this version so weak compared to Dylan's. I rather think its weakness comes from the fact that "Pop" (in a wide sense of the word) tends to make music "easier" to be listened... Nevertheless, there's something I like better in Chan's version, which is the last two verses: "When the bottle gets empty / Then life ain't worth the drown". (My english is not so good, I'm sorry)

  • i'm pretty sure she wasn't popular before or after this album's release (moon pix)

  • i've read about her struggle with consumption. i'd think she would be able to empathize; check your facts people. perhaps it's just the singing style you don't like. youtube comments are so retarded most of the time...

  • I never agreed with the lack of empathy someone here spoke of. Anyway, it's true what you say about youtube comments. Sometimes anonimity isn't good at all for discussion.

  • Couldn't agree more olyguy2000, the lack of range delivered drastically decreases the power of the song. Cabaret is a perfect comparison, I can picture some sultry woman singing this in fishnets and a top-hat

  • Awesome! And I'm a huge Dylan fan. She's a friggin genius and not even aware of the fact. More Cat Power, everywhere!

  • Rumbleseat does a great cover as well...they are all very different versions.

  • she is f'ing AWESOME!!

she does a GREAT job with this song...I love the darkness in her voice

  • it doesnt have the same feel as dylans..... not as believable

  • this sounds darker than dylan's to me... i love it.

  • loll "don't hate me dylan fans"

seeing cat power moonshiner, spelled disaster for me -but listening to it, i'm pleasently suprised. I still prefer Bobby's version, ofc :]

tbh, i never thought a woman's voice would be able to bring out this song, but she has done very well

  • wow, I'm suprised 4,991 views and only six comments. I'm surprised more people havn't been moved by this beautiful rendition of a great song.

  • Maybe it's just too good for words

  • This was nice o.o

I still think Dylan's is better, but this was really good.

  • i agree

  • i think i enjoy kentucky moonshiner by dave van ronk best. though this is a great rendition.

  • This is my favorite song by Chan Marshall (cat power). What do you think of her covers album?

  • I adore Cat Power's rendition of this track. <3

  • :) me too

  • This is good, but I still prefer Dylans version. Thanks for uploading it =D.
