Here's something to think about. If you chew your food 200 times, how much oxidation are you introducing to your food? Now, which is faster, chewing 200 times; or blending for half minute then immediately drinking?
I call BS. Even if blending raw fruit & vegetable smoothies together does cause oxidation, & even if it does cause putrefication, & even if it does cause a loss of 85%-90% of the nutritional value of the foods, is it not still better than eating pizza & washing it down with a coke? Because most people are nutrient deficient, dehydrated, & eat like they're still 19 at university. ASSuming what you say is true, only getting 10%-15% of the nutrients is better than getting 0%. Oxidation only harms a portion of nutrients, and the claim that 90 seconds of exposure to a very small amount of air (blenders are generally airtight with lid on) can do almost a non-existent amount of oxidative damage.

I think you just need to get it in ya anyway you can. Also, they have found that there are nutrients in the skin and pulp of fruits and vegetables that you just throw away when you're juicing. Fiber in the pulp also helps with digestion. So any way you look at it you find blending just as good as juicing. Sorry Doc.

Blending allows you to eat more greens in one sitting than you normally would also. Better I get full on a pound of spinach, an apple and some water. Than eat about 1/2 of that, run out of time because I have to get to work, drop the kids off at school, and be deficient by the middle of the day.
@Bigpussycat5 Green smoothies allow you to eat raw greens that most ppl wouldnt normally be eating. Do you usually eat raw kale? Dandelion greens? Beet greens? Id be surprised if you said yes.
This is where smoothies come in. They allow me to get a ton of greens into me that I wouldnt otherwise be eating.

believe it its difficult to eat optimally like this. but its possible. i dont drink juice. the closest thing that i eat that resembles juice is when i blend up my greens only to eat it as mush(i dont strain anything out;i like my fiber). these raw juices are a "not so sticky" bandaide to a diet issue. IMO there is more hype then actual nutritional benifit. better than no greens at all i guess.
Juicing versus blending is just like politics. If your an extremist one way or the other your probably selling something. Real people do both. If im thirsty from working or excorsise im going to drink a juice versus something thick and granulated. This guys argument that juicers dont oxidize fruits and vegetables just as much as a blender is absolutly absurd when fundemently its the same process. The key is how quickly you drink it after its been juiced or blended to get the maximum benefits.
That can't be so, Blending is superior than Juicing. I've done both. Blending gives you more diversity. We blenders use Nuts & Seeds and entire leaves of veggies. You juice freaks can't use Nuts & Seeds or Sprouts, etc. Naaa, no argument.

Its about what you put in them. Blended clean fruit and veg whole is great for you. When you put crap in it, Thats what you get. But, eating it whole if you can is good. There is an energy you get from eating the whole food. I agree. But any whole food is good for you.

I think there's middle ground, don't mix; just juice ONE type of fruit/veggie and chug it immediately before it oxidizes/ferments and never refrigerate for later and the next day do another single fruit/veg.
I have smoothies every morning, but have wondered the same thing. How is this getting digested if I'm drinking it? Chewing food mixes it with enzymes in your saliva which is what aids digestion.

The fact that the vegetation is being shredded/exposed to oxygenation will start the oxidation process - but the process is NOT instantaneous. It deteriorates over time.
Blend your green smoothie for 30-45 seconds in a good blender, drink it in the next few minutes and you will ingest some great nutrition.

This guy is not factual. you are not going to lose any significant value by blending. And for things like oranges, the juice is more harm than good for you. You want it blended to provide enough fiber to slow down the fructose overload in the liver. It takes a long time to oxidize the carbs in plants exposed to air, even if blended, and especially not if refrigerated after blending. This guy is bull artist.
This is incorrect. The nutrients are NOT very exposed to oxygen in a blender and NOT for a long time and so it does not NOT destroy all the nutrients. There is not a lot of validity to this video. Blending the food breaks down the food into smaller pieces so that the body can absorbe the nutrients easier. It's as simple as that and this video's claim is simply an attempt to get exposure. Put a potato through a juicer and it will turn brown from oxidation almost immediately. put a potato in a blender and it will have lighter coloration because from what i understand the fiber in smoothies prevents oxidation. smoothies are superior to juicing. also think about cooking your food. it breaks the cell walls, just like smoothie blending, making the nurients more accessible. this guy is an idiot.

However, the carbs are not nearly broken down enough to be digested. NO digestion occurs there. NO digestion occurs in the stomach either. Thats where your shit is broken down so you can digest in the SMALL INTESTINE. Carbs are digested by being coupled to Sodium and transported into the blood by sodium transporters.
Moral of the story, learn good eating habits by chewing your fruits/veggies until it is liquified then swallow it, blend or juice once a week to give your digestive system a good rest or even go on a fast.

This is very odd. You are still breaking down cell walls, whether it's blending and emulsifying (blender) or shredded and extracting (juicing). There is still small amounts of oxidation in either process. Green Smoothies are really great for people to get fiber plus nutrition and juices are quick shots of energy.

Google, "Why is Blending Better than Juicing" click on the first link. See the differences in oxidation between juice from a juicer, and "whole fruit juice" aka a smoothie. That being said, what is the best juicer? The one you WILL USE EVERY day! Secondly, check out the video "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" - he used a Breville (one of the worst for "whipping air" into the juice). Look at his results... I've seen my own and hundreds of other people's lives changed due to Green Smoothies.
I try to do big natrual raw salads as much or more than juice and smothies. However, I simply do not blend smoothies anywhere near 1.5 mins. In fact I only blend enough to get it drank, perhaps 15 - 20 seconds, and I get all the fiber. My juicer, otoh, completely tears up that plant and I get 0 fiber. I love juice, but this guy is not making sense that blended fruits and veggies are not healthy. Every new "guru" on the scene must invent some sort of gimmick. Sad.

first of all what the heck are you saying...no one blends for over three minutes long thats weird. second blending anything for like 15-25 sec long will not do anything to the food think about how long it takes for the food to be picked and delivered to a market...if the food looses any nutrients its during that process. finally, blending the food makes it easier on digestion bc instead of your body doing that work when being cut up the blender does it in 15 sec. plus what the alternative?..non!

Being raw wont save you but having a diet consisting of meat,fish,eggs,vegetables,nuts,seeds,seaweeds and cacao and raw dairy if you can get it is a great balance. You end up eating less having more strength to exercise. No more dry skin, no more ups and downs and positive thoughts because your feeding you brain the good stuff and its no deprivation! Complete nonsense. I did green smoothies for 1 year straight and reversed my cancer and heart disease. Green Smoothies are better than juicers. Both are great, but smoothies are healthier. I BLEND GUYS, and I've taken into consideration what Dr. Clement has to say about oxidization. What I do is SET my blender to the LOWEST settings so it is merely chopping the vegetables into pieces. This only takes 10 or 15 seconds. After this I blend it on HIGH speed for 5 or 6 seconds and it is DONE. Clement is saying not to blend for 1.5 to 3 MINUTES. I'm only blending for MAXIMUM 20 seconds.
Joel Fuhrman (Dr.) shows that blending allows 80% more of the nutrients to be absorbed by the body by breaking the cell wall. This notion of 'deadened' food due to blending makes no sense. I suppose we deaden/aerate food by chewing it too?
Blending (and juicing with a centrifugal extraction juicer) will aerate the juice in a smoothie which can and will accelerate oxidation, but aeration alone is not the same thing as oxidation. Drinking it up right away and you're good to go.
And fermentation is the gut flora eating its food - otherwise called fiber.

Have you seen a smoothie sit for hours? The top turns brown first. This tells us two things.
1. Oxidation takes hours.
2. The top layer that's in contact with open air oxidizes first. This means that whatever level of oxygen that's mixed into the smoothie is negligible because it takes several more hours for it to turn brown.
Isn't the whole purpose of raw food movement is to just increase your intake? I dont think it really matters how you do this whether by blending, juicing, eating whole or even cooking. They all have a purpose, advantages and disadvantages. I do all methods and I feel great!

Captian Obvious talking in this lame video fails to mention that chewing and digesting food in the harsh acidic environment of the stomach does the same thing. my superfoods list consists of: nutritional yeast, spirulina, kale, spinach, broccoli, flaxseed, seseme, chick pease, avocado,raw liver, pak choi, raw garlic, raw onions, berries, callard greens, swiss chard, beet greens, most nuts(except peanuts), dandelion greens( not so much as the nutritonal profile is not optimal), sweet potatos, oily fishs...just list a few

believe it its difficult to eat optimally like this. but its possible. i dont drink juice. the closest thing that i eat that resembles juice is when i blend up my greens only to eat it as mush(i dont strain anything out;i like my fiber). these raw juices are a "not so sticky" bandaide to a diet issue. IMO there is more hype then actual nutritional benifit. better than no greens at all i guess.

Juicing versus blending is just like politics. If your an extremist one way or the other your probably selling something. Real people do both. If im thirsty from working or excorsise im going to drink a juice versus something thick and granulated. That can't be so, Blending is superior than Juicing. I've done both. Blending gives you more diversity. We blenders use Nuts & Seeds and entire leaves of veggies. You juice freaks can't use Nuts & Seeds or Sprouts, etc. Naaa, no argument.
My cats have turned into beautiful animals since I add Spirulina to their food mix; & I'm almost 100% again after a most debilitating illness. I walk three miles a day on average and have the heart of a kid; I'm 68. Blenders rule!

This is pseudo-science at it's worst, with NO references.
The fact that the vegetation is being shredded/exposed to oxygenation will start the oxidation process - but the process is NOT instantaneous. It deteriorates over time.
Blend your green smoothie for 30-45 seconds in a good blender, drink it in the next few minutes and you will ingest some great nutrition.
Juicing will cause the same oxidation issues, but you won't have the fiber that's so important to our systems.
This is pure bunk.

This guy is not factual. you are not going to lose any significant value by blending. And for things like oranges, the juice is more harm than good for you. You want it blended to provide enough fiber to slow down the fructose overload in the liver. It takes a long time to oxidize the carbs in plants exposed to air, even if blended, and especially not if refrigerated after blending. This guy is bull artist.

This is incorrect. The nutrients are NOT very exposed to oxygen in a blender and NOT for a long time and so it does not NOT destroy all the nutrients. There is not a lot of validity to this video. Blending the food breaks down the food into smaller pieces so that the body can absorbe the nutrients easier. It's as simple as that and this video's claim is simply an attempt to get exposure. However, the carbs are not nearly broken down enough to be digested. NO digestion occurs there. NO digestion occurs in the stomach either. Thats where your shit is broken down so you can digest in the SMALL INTESTINE. Carbs are digested by being coupled to Sodium and transported into the blood by sodium transporters.

This is very odd. You are still breaking down cell walls, whether it's blending and emulsifying (blender) or shredded and extracting (juicing). There is still small amounts of oxidation in either process. Green Smoothies are really great for people to get fiber plus nutrition and juices are quick shots of energy.

Google, "Why is Blending Better than Juicing" click on the first link. See the differences in oxidation between juice from a juicer, and "whole fruit juice" aka a smoothie. That being said, what is the best juicer? The one you WILL USE EVERY day! Secondly, check out the video "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" - he used a Breville (one of the worst for "whipping air" into the juice). Look at his results... I've seen my own and hundreds of other people's lives changed due to Green Smoothies.

I try to do big natrual raw salads as much or more than juice and smothies. However, I simply do not blend smoothies anywhere near 1.5 mins. In fact I only blend enough to get it drank, perhaps 15 - 20 seconds, and I get all the fiber. My juicer, otoh, completely tears up that plant and I get 0 fiber. I love juice, but this guy is not making sense that blended fruits and veggies are not healthy. Every new "guru" on the scene must invent some sort of gimmick. Sad.

Being raw wont save you but having a diet consisting of meat,fish,eggs,vegetables,nuts,seeds,seaweeds and cacao and raw dairy if you can get it is a great balance. You end up eating less having more strength to exercise. No more dry skin, no more ups and downs and positive thoughts because your feeding you brain the good stuff and its no deprivation! Ill say I am never hungry like every thing hours! :) its a great feeling.

I BLEND GUYS, and I've taken into consideration what Dr. Clement has to say about oxidization. What I do is SET my blender to the LOWEST settings so it is merely chopping the vegetables into pieces. This only takes 10 or 15 seconds. After this I blend it on HIGH speed for 5 or 6 seconds and it is DONE. Clement is saying not to blend for 1.5 to 3 MINUTES. I'm only blending for MAXIMUM 20 seconds.

Joel Fuhrman (Dr.) shows that blending allows 80% more of the nutrients to be absorbed by the body by breaking the cell wall. This notion of 'deadened' food due to blending makes no sense. I suppose we deaden/aerate food by chewing it too?

Blending (and juicing with a centrifugal extraction juicer) will aerate the juice in a smoothie which can and will accelerate oxidation, but aeration alone is not the same thing as oxidation. Drinking it up right away and you're good to go.
And fermentation is the gut flora eating its food - otherwise called fiber.
Were it not for green smoothies - replete with fruit, I'd still be junk-food vegan. Those all-or-nothing Puritan$' message is part of what kept me away from fresh fruits/veggies.

He does know that vitamins and minerals come from the soil, originally, and its survived from being dirt to being the plant, doesn't he? Where does he get his data? Does he have research to backup his claim that blending loses 80% of the nutrients? There's no proof, so I'll stick with my blender drinks. Besides, there is a time factor involved for oxidation to occur. If you drink the smoothie right away there is no time for the oxidation to take place, and the contents are already being digested in your stomach.

Dingle berry doctor, oxidation doesn't happen in 30 seconds. Yes, oxygen mixes in but the juice doesn't oxidize instantly.
Have you seen a smoothie sit for hours? The top turns brown first. This tells us two things.
1. Oxidation takes hours.
2. The top layer that's in contact with open air oxidizes first. This means that whatever level of oxygen that's mixed into the smoothie is negligible because it takes several more hours for it to turn brown.

BS as usual.....the way I feel on blending and on raw diet that is blended and mixed with others stuff if it is even not a perfect food combining......The estimation of 85-95% is BS as I experience amazing changes in my life, health, spiritual and love life....(how about that ;-)) Do whatever it takes to get the juice out.... I agree on slow juicers like Norwalk.....and preventing oxidation but I definitely against the notion that you loose so much...not doing Raw will kill you faster .

The doctor is misleading again.oxidation needs enougth time to kill all those nutrients.fruit&vegies juice are very easy digested by the healthy intestines.if there is any putrefaction is because the system is cloged and dirty.Juicing will help to clean and restore health.There is no debate about juicing vs smoothing.They are not exclusive but complementary.

This is ridiculous; the oxidation will occur with juicing or blending. The difference between juicing and blending is fiber, smoothies leave the fiber juicing doesn't. It is a scientific fact that you will get more nutrients from eating whole food or drinking smoothies than juicing. With a smoothie you get every part of the fruit of veg, with juicing all you get is whatever your juicer squeezes out. This man is ignorant.

This dudes idea of putrefaction is very bizarre. The nutrients are absorbed immediately. your juice/smoothie should be eaten with in 15 min of making so the nutrients stay in the product.
@slexson a human being should not eat bread. Wheat has terrible effects on the neurological system. ADD, ADHD, autistic effects and others. find fiber elsewhere that is not processed or a fake substitute.

Look at all you bitter individuals snapping at this guy when oxidation is a KNOWN con of blending. Blendtec and Vitamixers bandwagoners have sucked into the marketed construct of them being so superior to juicers yet when someone actually offers an opposing point and backs juicers, you all can't handle it. Juicing has no "fiber" blah blah... I put benefiber in my juice and alot of what I eat, and I eat nothing but whole grain bread (6g fiber per slice). Blending isn't superior, accept it!
