  • to me, its a rocking john mcgloughlin(sp?) sound, and not missing much of the snaz or speed either

  • nice rif going down

  • The best Rhythm guitarist in the world is Robben Ford!!! Incredible tone and dynamics

  • fucking water on the dumble.....noooooo!!!!

  • its not just robben and larry who are playing awesome, its the whole band...

exspecially the drummer and the bass player are playing an awesome groovy style and the organist is just playing a little bit but it allways fits perfect in my opinion

  • @RaymanXXL Toss Panos & Travis Carlton are really good I see them with Robben really tasty!!!

  • true professionals

  • Love it.

  • 335Records -- Why is this playlist called "Michael Hedges Pieces?" Nothing against Robben Ford and Larry Carlton, but they don't have anything to do with Michael Hedges

  • bluesy funky JAZZY riffs

  • I LOVE Robben Ford's chops! And, his tone is always AMAZING! BTW, seeing that cup of water sitting on his Dumble amp head just made me cringe!

  • FuNky groove

  • guess the drummer wasn't listening

  • Wickedly cool fill by Toss Panos at 7:00!!!!!!!

  • Wickedly cool fill by Toss Panos at 7:00!!!!!!!

  • Larry Carlton is good but he seems like a goofball.

  • Just blows most everyone else away...Lot of posers out there that couldn't hold a candle...Amazing that Larry Carlton survived a random act of violence, being shot in the neck and left for dead....Comes back by God's grace and performs at a level beyond most...

  • Just blows most everyone else away...Lot of posers out there that couldn't hold a candle...

  • that is the best tone out of a les paul ive ever heard, sounds like hes got a ross compressor. and i think hes saying his volumes too high

  • what does Robben say at 1:38?

  • @maxwellph - he's telling Travis , "Db", which is the key the song is in. One of them got off key, but it's hard to tell which one.

  • @jconstant ahaha *just to tell u* no one got out of key here o_O empozzible ahaha

when one of the soloist call a certain key in a certain moment it means he is going to solo over a certain scale or substitute, it's just a hint **

  • @maxwellph youre just fine

  • great players .... only thing missing is becker and fagan and it would be a steely dan jam session ... those boys would sound great with any guitar and amp combo, it ain't the arrow it's the indian

  • Holy gawd, this obtuse and angular frame forces the soloists to deliver above and beyond the call of duty and damned if these mofos don't rise to the occasion. Respect.

  • I think he would sound better with a strat

  • this is super great music!!!!

  • They are so good..... why don't write better tunes, like a melody or somethin

  • @mmorper1987 they write soloing vehicles for themselves. like miles did (all blues, so what, most of the later stuff). it's their genre.scofield, metheny, carlton, ford . a few riffs, a few complex syncopated hits, a couple stops on a wild sounding chord, and then just play over a couple of chords. if it was misty or a beatle tune it wouldnt work like this does. not enough room to really do what they do best, blast endlessly creative bluesy funky riffs. think about it.

  • A glass of water over a 30,000 Dumble - funny accident waiting to happen.

  • @webcityguy

    $30.000 Dumble???!!

You must by joking mate, minimum 100.000 and 1959 gold top LP (belonged to Larry) also 100.000.

    Be cool.

  • There's a lot to be said for keeping a such simple groove so entertaining.

  • There's a lot to be said for keeping a simple groove so entertaining.

  • I love both these guys...for decades... but sorry its a boring groove...they have so many better songs...please

  • I love both these guys...for decades... but sorry its a boring groove...they have so many better songs...please

  • @7of9kids You dozy shithead lol

  • Awesome grooooooooooooooooove.

  • Chromatype

please show us a link to your videos as you are obviously amazing

    Thanks

  • @suegab7

    He's got a bigger amp..

  • 9 people were burned

  • poor drummer got hung out on an island a few times but made a good recovery! Drummer is good but he is no Keith Carlock. Carlock would have ate this for breakfast and shoved the groove so far up Larry's ass that he would have been smiling for days!

  • Toss Panos is a legend!!! love this groove!!!!

larry carlton is amazing! and robben ford WOOOOOOOOO =D

  • 2 of the greatest guitar players in history. food for thought: clearly a jazz player playing blues and a blues player playing jazz

  • Great Stuff - 2 masters playing together, as good as it gets...

  • Larry on his iconic Gibson ES-335! Love the sound!!!

  • I like Carlton's tone and general approach, but he can't hold a solid line when he tries to double time...it just sounds like wank...he should know better by now.

  • Oh my God!... How can anybody play in that different, complementary and magnificient ways both?...

  • Larry likes to control the dynamics of the band a bit doesn't he? LMAO

  • @Chromatype

Of course! He hires them (=pays them) to support HIS vision of music!

    This simply ain't democracy,

By the way - he does go into dynamic extremes.

  • Robben 'The Godfather' of Rythm.

  • doesnt panos also play with jeff?

  • Is there a studio version of this on CD anywhere?

  • sounds like scofield when i saw him in early 2000s..no?

  • Carlton looks like Gandhi. He´s a great player..but i´m sorry,i dont like the way he moves.

  • Well that was cool til Larry decided to take it way down the whole solo. Annoying.

  • Brill

  • I've got severe Dumble envy.

    Just wonderful stuff.

  • although i am partial to carlton, i do think that robben does outshine larry on this one

  • @suegab7 why is larrys guitar louder? same when i saw them in jacksonville, britt theatre???????????????????

  • @wsalviso I'd say its because he's a bit of a wanker !!

you seen him there with the drumer in this video it seems like he gets his way all the time !!!

nothing against his playing though !!

  • what scales is he using from 1:58 to 2:02 ?

  • @svidrigajlov I think its half-whole diminished mixed with minor pentatonic cause they are playing over an altered dominant chord

  • larry tells 'toss' that he is playing too loud twice during his solo

  • RF was made for this kind of groove. won't say he buries LC (no one does that) but there is an edginess to his playing that gets your attention immediately. his effortless capacity for going "outside" without flaunting/overdoing it really sets him apart. works like crazy in a blues setting as well.

  • @truthero plus he's about the hippest rhythm player imaginable.

  • All of you guys out there keep on talking about these two talented guitar cats, which of course is not particularly surprising since it is their show :) but you all seem to forget the engine in this concert, Toss Panos drummer extraordinary. No matter what you have to believe this Toss runs the show with his brilliant and magical drumming. So keep on discussing lines and riffs, guitar amps, chords, who plays better than the other, whatever...but tha drummer is the man in this show

  • @ZZDROSS You're dead right, Panos is an ANIMAL, in the best sense of the word....

I was lucky enough to catch him with RF and dang that boy rules the house.

  • This is sweet. Robben + Larry

  • this is friggin' amazing! WOW!

  • I really think robben outclassed larry on this one. His lines seemed to fit in more comfortably and with more funk than larry's while not being so unashamedly jazzy as larry's; he kinda stuck to blues scale for most but with some really expressive lines with amazing dynamics. Better luck next time larry old chap

  • that was absurdly good.

  • maybe my favorite opener for these 2 guys together... sweet baby J.... they will tear it up in boulder, colorado this april 29th 2010

  • So tasty. This is how I wanna play guitar...

  • not sure if those dumbles are worth all you have to do to get that tone...i can get a similar tone with my fender twin reverb and a delay, and SAVE 60 G;s

  • Lick using fragments of Auxiliary Dimished Blues scale @ 1: 54-1:59- typical of Robben -check him on Jing Chi Live w/ Jimmy Haslip & Vinnie Colaiutta

  • non ci sono parole per descrivere questo spettacolare duetto ....due grandi .... ciao a tutti gli amanti della buona musica

  • Travis Carlton plays the bass

  • Hey! Is that Howard "Alexander" Dumble on bass?

  • that is two world guitar chillies, never heard that type of fine tunes on that typical instruments ,

its defenetly will sick in memory

    well done

  • dumble divas in a dumbalistic dynamo

    and a duo at dat

  • Nice two Dumbles behind Larry.

  • these guys are smokin' !!!

  • Nice Dumble right behind Robben...

  • ...and let's not even mention the '57 Goldtop!

  • I just saw them last night at the blue note in tokyo. It was SICK!!!!

  • Listen to the vamp the bass player starts at 1:53. Then Larry doubles it at 3:02. Pure Jimi jam

  • you are an IGNORANT FOOL! can you play any of this song? can you tell us what key it's in? can you even improvise???? you are making a statement based upon what??? hopefully your ears one day will be able to handle such fine music and world class musicians. Who do you think is better? PLEASE enlighten us all!!!

  • @ANIMALLOVERSnr1 your gay

  • yo, that first line robben did is totally dope! but i think he did it accidently, rad!

  • Does anyone know who this song is by?

  • pretty sure it is written by Carlton

  • Comment removed

  • FUNKY !!!!!!!!

  • whoa...that's all I gotta say......AWESOME

  • Beautifully said, Laxer3232. This is true ensemble...where everyone listens and is suportive of the soloist, while at the same time having the freedom to stretch out however they choose within the parameters of their function in the music. Nothing more rewarding and satisfying.

  • Larry has to tell Toss Panos on the drums to keep it down a few times, good clip tho

  • I love his drum lick @ 7:00... :)

  • awesome!

  • Baddest ass shit ever. I saw these guys together in Nashville with Travis & Gary Novak on skins. It was a (guitarists') MAN'S man show!

And that drummer is the pocket, son!

  • There is a reason that Larry got all the work out east back then. Whew.

  • Robben plays differently when he's playing with Larry. Cool.

  • This in not the 'A" list, it's the A+ list!

These guys define musicianship to me.

  • I think it is just fascinating-when musicians come together and make some nice music-it's nice to listen to it!!!! Especially when they are very creative in what they do!!!!!

  • i dont usually let myself get sucked into the arguments but you are a complete dumbass. chromaticism is a key element to jazz which consists of tension and release. those chromatic notes build tension to make the right ones sound perfect which is why there is such an explosion of sound at 3:15. thanks man.

  • @jazzguitar33 You're another Youtube critic, so you must know your stuff, right? Show us your videos so we can talk sh*t about you too. Or maybe just STFU......

  • @jazzguitar33 Shut up you tool everyone makes mistakes, even the best.

  • Holy shit!

  • Toss Panos - amazing drummer!

  • Robben Ford is AMAZING here

  • whoever is watching this video has good taste in music

  • Thx :-)

  • Well then! The hobo I have bound and gagged in the basement, who is being forced to watch this repeatedly has an excellent taste in music! Good to know.

  • Yeah i know

  • @adam327901 thank u

  • @adam327901 why thanks

  • @adam327901 thanks

  • Oh yeah. That's a vibe.

  • i`ve seen robben live with the same les paul...amazing.

  • isn't this the same les paul larry plays in the video with ritenour in tokyo? is it larry's or robben'a guitar then?

  • This is the same guitar Robben had when I met him at GIT in 2001. Keith Wyatt also has one that looks just like it.

  • @blume137 larry gave it to robben as a present ;-)

  • My god, what a amazing technique.

  • now thats what i'm talkin bout

  • Comment removed

  • i think steely dan get a lot of their harmonic ideas from listening to other players, but that is what good music is all about, sharing ideas, being friends

  • wow, robben kicks ass!

  • eh......

  • This is it !!!

  • The Dumble maffia

  • i wish i had a dumble overdrive special!, that would make my life!

  • I think tritone blues hit the nail on the head..this is a litte easier on people would can't get their head into hard fusion like maclaughlin,DiMeola etc....i have to say i really love the way these two guys spice up the blues with some great jazz licks...i would love to see robben doing a stint with steely dan.....

  • its cuz you're a Noob.

  • coolest handle on youtube Hoob! attaboy!!

  • Most people who like it or appreciate it will have dabbled in playing jazz or they will have been brought up with it.

Musicians' music I think, the knowledge of theory and practice that goes in to this alone is humbling to me and then there's some flippin sweet creativity too.

  • about 20 years ago. Two guys tried to break into

his recording studio and shot him in the neck.

  • ever since Larry was shot,he seems to play with more fire. Hes the middle ground between BB and John mclaughlin.

  • when was larry shot ?

  • Larry was shot in the throat in the late1980's, and Kirk Whalum the great sax player gave him blood. We almost never got to see this video!! Think about it!!!

  • Sorry to disagree with you. Saw Larry many times in late 70s before he was shot. His playing was a bit more raw and rocked out. He was always a frustrated be bopper (he told me so in an interview), and his playing after he was shot is more refined and softer in comparison. Either way, he's one of the greats!

  • Hey man? is this on DVD??? wanna get it, how's it called???

  • Aplausos desde argentina !!!!

  • does anyone have guitar tabs of this?

  • if you like this one, check out "The Prince" by these same two...DARN fine guitar playing ...and we all watch in wonder.

  • Both of these guys are two of my fav's ever. Has anyone played on the new larry carlton 335 that they have bought out?

  • its not about speed, pal !!! there are more important things in music ...

  • And plus, it just plain makes me feel good, period!

  • Exactly! You're looking at maybe the 2 single greatest jazz rock guitarists. So shake it off, dude. There are a lot of us who will never be that good. But watching this sure as hell inspires me to become the best player that "I" can be. 'Nuff said! By the way, I totally dig the vamp during Carlton's solo.

  • 1st how long have you been playing? these 2 are seasoned veterans of the road for decades now...this makes me just want to practice more and more..learn more..read more therory..even tho i'm a 30 plus yr player..these 2 are amazing and 2 of my faves

  • what is wrong with guitar players?! this should be inspiring!!! instead I just feel more insecure about my own playing. :(

  • Dude, just steal their licks. All of 'em.

  • Or at least make it your life's work. trust me, it's even more fun then sex or drugs !

  • Already done that-need something new and challenging!

  • my new favourite song

  • I wish they can come to Hong Kong.

  • This tune kinda rips Herbie Hancock's old stuff...

  • that chordal riff at 4:20 is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Larry Carlton is so versatile and talented. I love listen to him play. He plays with everyone and does just great! He's a the guitar player for Fourplay and I love those guys. Their music seems to get better each new CD.

  • gib-funk, gotta love it.

  • His son's name is Travis. I saw Travis guest appear in Los Angeles at a Cartlon show in which Carlton introduced him as a recent MI graduate who was gonna sit in on a song. He sat in for the legend... Abe Laboriel & every note Travis played Abe stood with his mouth open smiling & leaning in as Travis played each phrase & then laughing in disbelief. The song ended & Carlton said "watch out for him is up & coming... & he also is my son". It was pretty fricken sweet. & yes his playing is amazing.

  • Look at this drummer, what a great feel, mon oh man

  • Who is that drummer any way??

  • Toss Panos. He owns.

  • One of the best drummers on the scene today. MASSIVE feel. Not to mention the two guys messing around on the guitar... just saw them live last week. Great guys, absolutely zero BS attitude about them.

  • Who is Toss Panos? I'm a Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta, Billy Cobham, Chris Parker, Harvey Mason, Joel Rosenblatt, Alex Acuna, Sheila E, Steve Smith, etc. fan. I have many favorite drummers. Those are just a few. Where is that guy from? I like his style. If he's playing with Larry, he must be good!

  • Toss has been around the LA scene for a while; one of the underground guys who has been on a lot of sessions; especially with players' players like Mike Keneally, Jeff Babko, Karizma (99), Robben Ford (Toss has contributed to Robben's last two studio efforts), Frank Gambale, Mike Landau, etc. He taught at PIT in Hollywood from 87-96. Certainly a qualified cat.

  • The "Big Boy" on bass is Larry's son.... Don't remember his name but, He smokes! Larry is very proud of him. I saw them 2 years ago.. same line up but without Robben. Great blues show... Saw Robben at the same place last year... Crystal Bay club in Tahoe, small room, very intimate. Great shows!

  • YIKES!!!!AMAZING!!!! who else is in this band?

  • this is what you call musicianship with great Class. All of them sharing the music!

  • Ahem. Looking at this, I guess I'm possibly partially to blame for the 'competition' thing, though unintentionally so. These guys are both amazing. Amazing! Can I play like this? Hah! Not even close. Can I appreciate different aspects of their styles? You bet. LC is older and perhaps more audibly seasoned. RF might be younger, but I dig his phrasing and articulation more in a way. Can I express an opinion? Why not?

But I'll say it again: Both of these dudes are absolute monsters. Peace.

  • for all the shit on this wall about 'competition' these guys complement each other incredibly well. if ur not musically inclined or just plain smart enough to notice how they work together in these songs, maybe u should go throw out your guitar, and ur inferiority complex along with it

  • Amen dude, i've been studying these two guys for 25 years or so, never got to see them play together till now, they are not in competition, don't listen to these rookies talk shit, maybe the should throw away their god damn guitars and take up needle point or something! Ha Ha.

  • sick show
