its not just robben and larry who are playing awesome, its the whole band...
exspecially the drummer and the bass player are playing an awesome groovy style and the organist is just playing a little bit but it allways fits perfect in my opinion
335Records -- Why is this playlist called "Michael Hedges Pieces?" Nothing against Robben Ford and Larry Carlton, but they don't have anything to do with Michael Hedges
Just blows most everyone else away...Lot of posers out there that couldn't hold a candle...Amazing that Larry Carlton survived a random act of violence, being shot in the neck and left for dead....Comes back by God's grace and performs at a level beyond most...
great players .... only thing missing is becker and fagan and it would be a steely dan jam session ... those boys would sound great with any guitar and amp combo, it ain't the arrow it's the indian
Holy gawd, this obtuse and angular frame forces the soloists to deliver above and beyond the call of duty and damned if these mofos don't rise to the occasion. Respect.
@mmorper1987 they write soloing vehicles for themselves. like miles did (all blues, so what, most of the later stuff). it's their genre.scofield, metheny, carlton, ford . a few riffs, a few complex syncopated hits, a couple stops on a wild sounding chord, and then just play over a couple of chords. if it was misty or a beatle tune it wouldnt work like this does. not enough room to really do what they do best, blast endlessly creative bluesy funky riffs. think about it.
poor drummer got hung out on an island a few times but made a good recovery! Drummer is good but he is no Keith Carlock. Carlock would have ate this for breakfast and shoved the groove so far up Larry's ass that he would have been smiling for days!
I like Carlton's tone and general approach, but he can't hold a solid line when he tries to double time...it just sounds like wank...he should know better by now.
RF was made for this kind of groove. won't say he buries LC (no one does that) but there is an edginess to his playing that gets your attention immediately. his effortless capacity for going "outside" without flaunting/overdoing it really sets him apart. works like crazy in a blues setting as well.

I really think robben outclassed larry on this one. His lines seemed to fit in more comfortably and with more funk than larry's while not being so unashamedly jazzy as larry's; he kinda stuck to blues scale for most but with some really expressive lines with amazing dynamics. Better luck next time larry old chap
not sure if those dumbles are worth all you have to do to get that tone...i can get a similar tone with my fender twin reverb and a delay, and SAVE 60 G;s

Exactly! You're looking at maybe the 2 single greatest jazz rock guitarists. So shake it off, dude. There are a lot of us who will never be that good. But watching this sure as hell inspires me to become the best player that "I" can be. 'Nuff said! By the way, I totally dig the vamp during Carlton's solo.

Larry Carlton is so versatile and talented. I love listen to him play. He plays with everyone and does just great! He's a the guitar player for Fourplay and I love those guys. Their music seems to get better each new CD.
His son's name is Travis. I saw Travis guest appear in Los Angeles at a Cartlon show in which Carlton introduced him as a recent MI graduate who was gonna sit in on a song. He sat in for the legend... Abe Laboriel & every note Travis played Abe stood with his mouth open smiling & leaning in as Travis played each phrase & then laughing in disbelief. The song ended & Carlton said "watch out for him is up & coming... & he also is my son". It was pretty fricken sweet. & yes his playing is amazing.
One of the best drummers on the scene today. MASSIVE feel. Not to mention the two guys messing around on the guitar... just saw them live last week. Great guys, absolutely zero BS attitude about them.
Who is Toss Panos? I'm a Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta, Billy Cobham, Chris Parker, Harvey Mason, Joel Rosenblatt, Alex Acuna, Sheila E, Steve Smith, etc. fan. I have many favorite drummers. Those are just a few. Where is that guy from? I like his style. If he's playing with Larry, he must be good!
Toss has been around the LA scene for a while; one of the underground guys who has been on a lot of sessions; especially with players' players like Mike Keneally, Jeff Babko, Karizma (99), Robben Ford (Toss has contributed to Robben's last two studio efforts), Frank Gambale, Mike Landau, etc. He taught at PIT in Hollywood from 87-96. Certainly a qualified cat.
The "Big Boy" on bass is Larry's son.... Don't remember his name but, He smokes! Larry is very proud of him. I saw them 2 years ago.. same line up but without Robben. Great blues show... Saw Robben at the same place last year... Crystal Bay club in Tahoe, small room, very intimate. Great shows!
Ahem. Looking at this, I guess I'm possibly partially to blame for the 'competition' thing, though unintentionally so. These guys are both amazing. Amazing! Can I play like this? Hah! Not even close. Can I appreciate different aspects of their styles? You bet. LC is older and perhaps more audibly seasoned. RF might be younger, but I dig his phrasing and articulation more in a way. Can I express an opinion? Why not?
But I'll say it again: Both of these dudes are absolute monsters. Peace.
for all the shit on this wall about 'competition' these guys complement each other incredibly well. if ur not musically inclined or just plain smart enough to notice how they work together in these songs, maybe u should go throw out your guitar, and ur inferiority complex along with it
Amen dude, i've been studying these two guys for 25 years or so, never got to see them play together till now, they are not in competition, don't listen to these rookies talk shit, maybe the should throw away their god damn guitars and take up needle point or something! Ha Ha.
to me, its a rocking john mcgloughlin(sp?) sound, and not missing much of the snaz or speed either

Ha Ha.
