The part that makes me laugh here everytime is "...which is a little more tricky." Just how rediculous it looks to most of us, and the sheer ease at which he's doing it. And this is supposed to be some sort of tutorial.
This is like playing video games for the first time ever, picking Devil May Cry, and throwing it on Dante Must Die difficulty.
@zebatov It's just a pentatonic pattern.. or so. I'm not too sure.
Either way... It's just a 5 note pattern being repeated in intervals and switched up in syncopation into the lower frets.
Yngwie has some chops, but his patterns here aren't difficult. Paul gilbert is slower because he chooses a melodic route, but his patterns don't repeat (atleast with his classical stuff). .
Yngwie is running laps, paul is running then swimming, then flying an airplane.
You're comparing Gilbert's classical "stuff" with Yngwie's self-taught methods? Which, as I stated, he learned playing classical violin sheet music.....? That's absurd. Yngwie is as classically trained as you can get. Comparing Gilbert's classical stuff (which there isn't a lot of vs his normal pentatonic pull-off riffs) to an everyday Yngwie riff (since it's all classical based) regardless of how simple the pattern, is a losing argument.
Compare Yngwie's regular patterns to Gilbert's regular patterns (5 note pentatonic). Yngwie picks 98% of his notes or more while Gilbert is frequently using hammers and pull-offs. I'm not saying Gilbert is a terrible guitarist by any means. He's phenominal. I'm just saying you're comparing a very small amount of his playing to all of Yngwie's (or in this vid, a small tutorial) and I'm going to have to disagree with you.
@zebatov Um, you needn't say "5 note pentatonic", Einstein. Pentatonic means 5 notes! lol Was that supposed to make ya sound smart? JK I actually agree with you, just had to point that out. Neither Yngwie or Gilbert are half as fast as Al DiMeola anyway!
The only other thing I'm getting out of this from you, is that you're saying Yngwie is basically using a sort of "memory" in this scale he's playing. Up and down, up and down. While Gilbert plays all over. Well, aside from the fact that Yngwie can do what Gilbert does, that's all from memory too. Once you've memorized the first twelve frets, you've memorized the second. Then you just play the notes... Just because he isn't displaying "talent" here, doesn't mean he can't.
I'm just comparing one lick vs one other song lick. It's his Bach prelude no.15 to be exact No need for a thesis paper.
I can't speak for Yngwies self teaching because i don't really worry about his origins.
You said you couldn't play this right? i told you to understand the pattern. But basically what i'm saying is that this lick compared to the other is just practice, but since he already got down with muscle memory(yngwie) it gives the illusion of complexity with his speed. It's just practic
I see. That's what I was saying before about memorizing it. Gilbert's arrangement of prelude 15 is memorized too... Versus Yngwie just playing that. I mean, I'm sure it's something he plays all the time, but it wasn't a studio release that was played until perfect. It was sort of on the spot. I would like to see Gilbert create something in the style of Bach on the spot that Yngwie couldn't do also.
he certainly has speed. I would love to see him play this on a Les Paul Custom turned all the way up w/heavy guage strings...that would be the ultimate test.
Eh. His style is like a 17 y/o boy rocker. Like he never grew out of that phase. Uses quite a lot of pull-offs and hammers. Idk he's decent. Yngwie has that classical background since he learned using violin sheet music and a metronome. Paul's good. But I'm not sure if it's as good imo.
Actually the truth is , his guitar neck was never scalloped . as a result of shredding, miniature trenches were bore into the neck from playing . .... lol
@juandiegometallica the hardest part's not picking the fastest possible, but to make your left and right hand syncronize well, you know. While I like metallica, their fast picking parts are only done on an open string, even I could pick faster than what malmsteem did there if i had no left hand movement to do.
@mustaine8282 Haha, hate speech on the internet, if you're immature enough to think it will do anything else than to shows you're a retard, then fine, swear all you want... However, don't expect it to do anything.
@blobliblo35 do legato stuff.. it builds up the speed.. and having the thumb under the neck at about have way makes ur hand freer to stretches and faster playing.. malmsteen doesnt do this.. cuz his hand is soo fat!!... my maximum speed is 280 bpm using 16th notes. it took me 2 months to get there tho
TR TR TR TR TR TR TR... And the you know.... TRTRTRTRTRTRTRTTRTRTR... Which you can also... TRRRRrrRtrRtRTrrt.... but after all.... TRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...I mean... RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.... you know...
You can't take anything away from Malmsteen, but Buckethead is faster...both are amazing, though. Saw these guys in Dallas, and both are truly talented.

urrm obviously ....u idiots , when u wanna search for the fastest , the strongest , the biggest of whatever things , it would be related to guiness world record and its also true for the fastest picker
@kamatewarrior23 Which he also does greatly... Yngwie is great, i personally don't like him as a person but he's a great guitarist and whoever dismisses that or says "there's no soul" is just a bad guitarist that doesn't know that technique and ability equate passion.
@LOLPombaer lol wtf like the guy from linkin park XD
Just shut up lol
What i was on about was the fact that every song he does he does it a million notes a second in a classical scale. As a musician you should always be expanded and growing into different way. Btw playing slow (if good) can be just as good as quick. 1 note can easily be worth 10 if it is the right one.
@MrGamerBazer Shut up... a musician plays what he likes, you can't tell jimi hendrix to play pop, just like you can't tell britney spears to play blues.
Your own style and bettering it- is what you should focusing on, sure you can play different genres, but don't say- just because your only really good at hard rock, that means you suck and dismisses your skills entirely.
And if yngwie prefers playing fast, that's his thing. That's what he's comfortable doing.
@Jamsessionroom1337 eeerm firstly no i wont and secondly. I'm not saying play a completely different genre of music and i do appreciate the skill and speed he does have. But as a musician you should always look to expand your knowledge. That why 1 album gets lower or higher ratings than the one before. Because you experiment. Your not a musician if you jsut stick to doing on thing only. And no its a double edged sword. You should only play what you like in respect of fans....
@MrGamerBazer He has more knowledge than most players labeled "shredder". But he plays what he wants and he's done well for it. Clapton still plays the same riffs after so many years.
@MrGamerBazer Playing slow and "expanding in different ways" isn't Yngwie's thing. His mission clearly isn't to innovate the music world with unheard arranging and expression methods. What's so hard about acknowledging something and showing some fucking respect for something he's better at than you could possibly get. Does it make you feel better about it if you find something far-fetched to fault upon?
Jeez, i hope yngwie plays something interesting some day. Listened to him for almost his whole career. I get it, you love Bach, now what? Seventh sign was a good album though, defintely prefer the bluesy stuff.
he is not the fastet he is an amateur compared to michael angelo batio check out speed kills on youtube hes so fast it looks like hes been speeded up when he plays seriously insane he is the guitar god and if u watch mabs guitar tutorials he will give u the keys to the lamborgini
I learned to play "Secret Agent Man" on the E string of my guitar too! Seems to me that this man could use some coaching from some of the REAL guitarists on how to use the rest of the fretboard. There ARE five other strings dipshit.
@lido672 i dont care who you are or why you even bothered commenting, but yngwie is probably in the top 5 greatest guitarists in the world. he is in a league so high above yours, you are a microbe to him. take your troll hating elsewhere.
"Well the pattern I use is, OF COURSE, this" oh of course Yngwie how could we NOT know that the pattern we use is *insert shredding ass guitar solo here* its simple music theory
i have the fucking line 6 pod hd 500 and i fucking cant set it to sound like that.. i mean so clean. please guys, fucking help me, give me a preset or tell me how to set it.. :(
So many Malmsteen discussions revolve around the lack of feeling in his playing, This may be a conspiracy, it may be a coincidence or it may be, as is often said, that "anyone who can't appreciate the feeling in Malmsteen's playing is a drunk/retarded/gay/jealous/loser who has sex with his grandmother". I wouldn't want anyone to think that so let me say that Yngwie's incessant scales and arpeggios bring a lump to my throat and the speed of his endless shredding moves me to tears.
@warguy58 Amen brother! I get so sick of those "no feeling, no soul" comments. What is he supposed to do, make a face like he's taking a shit? Like he's in pain? That is just an illlusion to create the impression that it's "hard work" to play well. Vai is a good example. Watch his face contort when doing a hard solo. It makes mushy headed people think he's got oh so much feeling when he plays. He's awesome, but a showman. Yngvie is a cool customer and it shows.
@0Heavy0Metal0 I understand the weak-minded might get lost in his fast playing, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have feeling. If they want to see him jump around and make faces, they should look up Evil Eye.
@0Heavy0Metal0 Have you seen Malmsteen and Vai on stage together?
After watching Malmsteen playing Voodoo Child with Vai and Satriani, I'd find it hard to label them "Vai - the Showman" v. "Malmsteen - the cool customer"
@warguy58 you've seen not many. I don't wan't to say he has no feeling, because I don't really know any of his work, but here's a deal, I show you something with BIG feeling: watch?v=8akmP6Sjv2o solo starts at 1:40, now show me something from Yngwie with more feeling. Iam not trying to fool you, I really want to hear something . maybe Iam a future Yngwie fan. Or youre a future Buckethead fan.
@warguy58 Youre funny. I said I don't know any of his playing. If you mean that this video is his most emotional playing then he has not much feeling in his playing. post a damn vid were he shows his emotional soloing. I WANT to hear it. Iam not trolling.
he may not be the fastest, but he's one of the best and one of the most creative artists the world will ever know :D And that's why we all fucking love him :D Marshmallows for everyone!

What i was on about was the fact that every song he does he does it a million notes a second in a classical scale. As a musician you should always be expanded and growing into different way. Btw playing slow (if good) can be just as good as quick. 1 note can easily be worth 10 if it is the right one.
MrGamerBazer 1 month ago
@MrGamerBazer Shut up... a musician plays what he likes, you can't tell jimi hendrix to play pop, just like you can't tell britney spears to play blues.
Your own style and bettering it- is what you should focusing on, sure you can play different genres, but don't say- just because your only really good at hard rock, that means you suck and dismisses your skills entirely.
And if yngwie prefers playing fast, that's his thing. That's what he's comfortable doing.
Jamsessionroom1337 1 month ago
@Jamsessionroom1337 eeerm firstly no i wont and secondly. I'm not saying play a completely different genre of music and i do appreciate the skill and speed he does have. But as a musician you should always look to expand your knowledge. That why 1 album gets lower or higher ratings than the one before. Because you experiment. Your not a musician if you jsut stick to doing on thing only. And no its a double edged sword. You should only play what you like in respect of fans....
MrGamerBazer 1 month ago
@MrGamerBazer He has more knowledge than most players labeled "shredder". But he plays what he wants and he's done well for it. Clapton still plays the same riffs after so many years.
StanleyKu 1 month ago
@MrGamerBazer Playing slow and "expanding in different ways" isn't Yngwie's thing. His mission clearly isn't to innovate the music world with unheard arranging and expression methods. What's so hard about acknowledging something and showing some fucking respect for something he's better at than you could possibly get. Does it make you feel better about it if you find something far-fetched to fault upon?
LOLPombaer 1 month ago
I could do that... just give me a Redbull
Minecraftia77 1 month ago
Tiago Della Vega plays thrice as fast, although neither him or Malmsteen got the feeling of it.
Guitarmanblue 1 month ago
Jeez, i hope yngwie plays something interesting some day. Listened to him for almost his whole career. I get it, you love Bach, now what? Seventh sign was a good album though, defintely prefer the bluesy stuff.

I learned to play "Secret Agent Man" on the E string of my guitar too! Seems to me that this man could use some coaching from some of the REAL guitarists on how to use the rest of the fretboard. There ARE five other strings dipshit.
lido672 1 month ago
@lido672 He's showing a picking pattern, not how to play something using all six strings.
vOuijaa 1 month ago
@lido672 i dont care who you are or why you even bothered commenting, but yngwie is probably in the top 5 greatest guitarists in the world. he is in a league so high above yours, you are a microbe to him. take your troll hating elsewhere.

Klhaug97 1 month ago
@Klhaug97 yeah for sure to tell you the Truth i can pick faster, & ok you want some one who is know, how about EVH, Paul Gilbert, many are faster.
DONT get me i could never play like malmsteen my left hand is not fast.
its not picking speed its mainly left hand technique that makes his playing fast.
and YES i Love malmsteens music.
MetalHeart8787 1 month ago
People are so fucking stupid. He has more feeling than any guitarist I've ever seen.
warguy58 1 month ago
@warguy58 Amen brother! I get so sick of those "no feeling, no soul" comments. What is he supposed to do, make a face like he's taking a shit? Like he's in pain? That is just an illlusion to create the impression that it's "hard work" to play well. Vai is a good example. Watch his face contort when doing a hard solo. It makes mushy headed people think he's got oh so much feeling when he plays. He's awesome, but a showman. Yngvie is a cool customer and it shows.
0Heavy0Metal0 1 month ago 2
@0Heavy0Metal0 I understand the weak-minded might get lost in his fast playing, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have feeling. If they want to see him jump around and make faces, they should look up Evil Eye.
warguy58 1 month ago
@0Heavy0Metal0 Have you seen Malmsteen and Vai on stage together?
After watching Malmsteen playing Voodoo Child with Vai and Satriani, I'd find it hard to label them "Vai - the Showman" v. "Malmsteen - the cool customer"
dadicarcar 1 month ago
@warguy58 you've seen not many. I don't wan't to say he has no feeling, because I don't really know any of his work, but here's a deal, I show you something with BIG feeling: watch?v=8akmP6Sjv2o solo starts at 1:40, now show me something from Yngwie with more feeling. Iam not trying to fool you, I really want to hear something . maybe Iam a future Yngwie fan. Or youre a future Buckethead fan.

warguy58 1 month ago
@warguy58 no I'm not, why should I?
hallio111 1 month ago
@hallio111 Because if you can't pull the feeling out of his intricate playing, you're either drunk or weak minded.
warguy58 1 month ago
@warguy58 Youre funny. I said I don't know any of his playing. If you mean that this video is his most emotional playing then he has not much feeling in his playing. post a damn vid were he shows his emotional soloing. I WANT to hear it. Iam not trolling.
hallio111 1 month ago
@hallio111 Alright, I'll guide you.
Step 1: Type "Yngwie Malmsteen" in the Youtube search panel.
Step 2: Click on a video.
