Does any1 know the name of the piece that plays at the very beginning with the strings from 0:00-0:39 secs plz? thanks so much. it plays again when the woman finishes singing her 1st verse
@tasmiya1000 it's just the riternello (ritornello) of the prologue. I loved the ritornello so much that I went and bought a recording of L'Orfeo just to have it :) Now I love the whole thing!
Monteverdi specifically cautioned his players NOT to over-ornament their parts in this work: he instructed them to play "as simply and correctly as possible, and not with many florid passages or runs." Savall, almost alone among modern conductors, follows this conservative instruction from the composer.
Yes, was pretty happy to find this --would put Savall on the list with Jeremy Barlow, Roy Goodman, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Paul Hillier, Christopher Hogwood, John Eliot Gardiner, Nicholas McGegan, David Munrow, Andrew Parrott, Trevor Pinnock, etc...
I get the feeling that this is a very accurate representation of baroque performance.
Also, Canadian Brass have done some great recordings of Monteverdi's pieces as instrumentals for all brass. I'm not sure if Monteverdi intended to write for all brass ensembles, but regardless they sound fantastic.

I, with my golden lyre, singing, am used
to charm, sometimes, mortal ears
and in this way with sounding harmony
of the lyre of heaven I inspire their souls.
- Yes, you did Montserrat.

Adèu Montserrat i a revèure. La musica antiga ha quedat orfe.
Monserrat i Jordi, heu fet tant per la musica, que mai us ho podrem tornar, ni en tots els primis del món.
gràcies.

Savall's direction is wonderful: the orchestra sounds awesome!
I don't like much Figueras voice.
