  • We are last in the developing world. All the nations that are ahead of the US are doing things much different, and completely opposite that the US is doing. They must be doing something right.

  • What a great debate this is on here.

  • Just by watching these comments one could come to the conclusion that you didn't do very well on the education department...

  • @Darusdei The truth is most of our country doesn't.

  • @Charlie12241 Well that came out abit stereotypical to begin with... It just seems that the stupid yanks are the most vocal

  • @Darusdei I'm only saying a lot of people in the US don't know things they should. Its nothing against my country education just sucks here. I am from the US and have heard a lot of stupidity.

  • @Charlie12241 well i listened to some republican debates when obama won... i wasn't very impressed...

i know when my ideology differs from another, but the things they said were just stupid...

  • @Charlie12241 It is true. It is embarrassing when people in other Nations know more American history than Americans. But I think the problems is that we worry to much about teachers jobs and not enough about kids educations. You can't deny that private schools out perform public schools. Poor kids are forced to go to public because rich parents who send their kids to privates school "believe the system can work".

  • @mixmastermeeks You're right and I wish politicans would see it that way.

  • were the people commenting here listening? katie at no point said she agreed or disagreed with the content of the film. she did say that it would probably stimulate debate and bring the problems to more people's attention. that is a good thing.

  • Katie, you are a shill for the liberals and a total hypocrite. It is a pity that you still have a job, because you are the worst evening news anchor ever! Go back to your fluff AM news gig, where your pimp journalism is more appropriate!

  • @pdbosp look there is nothing wrong with Katie Couric just reporting the news, she doesn't even have a position in this matter, she did say that it would stimulate debate and bring the problems to attention. That is a good thing. Ever heard of Amendment 1 from the US Bill of Rights, Freedom of Speech, if you don't like her don't watch it! i'm an independant for this is what Washington didn't want, political parties fighting each other, he said that in his farewell address

  • God BLESS the director of this film!

He SPOKE OF his support of the school unions, but when it came time to send HIS OWN KIDS to school, he BRAVELY and COURAGEOUSLY admitted, he sent his kids to a PRIVATE school!

Instead of living a life of LIBERAL HYPOCRISY, like the Obamas do, he directed this HONEST film because he REALLY CARES about the kids!

This man directed "An Inconvenient Truth," so no doubt about his LIBERAL CREED!

He chose the welfare of CHILDREN over his ideology!

  • waaaaaaah, let's all blame katie couric for being successful at what she does. how dare she have an opinion. get over yourself and deal with it

  • @jtbro86 NO! Let's talk about the HYPOCRISY of Katie's SUPPORT of the public school system teacher union, but REFUSING to send HER kids into one of THOSE schools! If public schools are soooooo good, why does she NOT send her kids to one? Why doesn't the Obamas send THEIR daughters to a public school? Why didn't Chelsea NEVER see the inside of a public school?

They KNOW public schools range from average AT BEST, to MEDIOCRE to PITIFUL, to PURE SHIT in the educational quality! continued.....

  • @jtbro86 When negotiations are going on between the school unions and the board of education and US government, I NEVER, EVER hear the unions say, "How can we better educate the CHILDREN?"

Oh yes, the CHILDREN! When do we QUIT PUNISHING the CHILDREN simply based on their PHYSICAL appearance, where they LIVE and if their parents just HAPPEN to be POOR?

People WELL KNOW teacher pay isn't great! If you do NOT want to sacrifice YOURSELF then teaching is NOT for you!

  • People like Katie Couric are the reason why we can't fix our schools. She is a big government liberal masquerading as a journalist, and like all big government liberals she kisses Teacher's Union butt right in the crack. Guarantee you she sends her children to the best private school her money can buy ... just like Obama does.

  • @MaryWaterton If there was any doubt where Katie Couric leans this should put all doubts to rest.

  • I have a hard time believing that only 1 in 5 private schools perform as well as public schools. I'd love to see the data and how it is twisted to get that result.

  • I can't believe a grown person would say such things

  • @ilooovejustinbieberr I have managed, 4 aprox 10yrs different reatil establishment with teenagers as employees And I can run a succesful store. one thing I teach my kids is not to whine but to fix problems. And I am returning to school to get a teaching degree because I believe I can do a better job. Maybe you all should try retail management w/spoiled adults as customers.

  • @ilooovejustinbieberr - He has a point, the teacher makes or breaks that classroom. A bad teacher, as every student has had at least 1 of, can destroy both the children's AND parents' initiative. So, before passing the blame, please look around at your co-workers.

On a side note, you seem a bit burnt out. This is also quite common in the teaching profession, and is bad for students. Teacher burnout is something that can demolish an entire school; turnover is necessary.

  • it IS all about the adults....

  • Katie you little blonde hoe for the state run CBS media propoganda where was all your criticism for the director when he directed "inconvenient Truth"

  • teaching is not a job, teaching is a mission. you american should remember that.

  • I guessing there are 2 times the amount of public schools then there are charter schools. So her fact about only 1 in 5 charter schools out performing public schools seems more then a little flawed, am i right?

  • @iFataLFraMez

Sorry but you sir are an idiot! Think about it

  • In foreign countries, there is no SOCIAL PROMOTION. If a student fails, he must repeat the entire year . . . AGAIN!

In America, it is literally impossible to "flunk" a student!

A teacher must attend a "special retention meeting", where she must present her case to a panel of experts.

Even, if the team agrees to retain the student, the parents can still veto their decision!

That is how you end up with junior high kids that don't know their time tables and read at a 2nd grade level!

  • The teachers unions shold be banned

  • my parents came 2 this country speaking lil english they workd factory jobs & sent all 5 of their kids to "private grammar & high school" We did 't have all the goverment pd programs & lost an excellent teach. 2 the public school systm because he had to support his family & the catholic schools system could not pay him enough. Teachers have ALOT to blame. They are the ones in charg of that classrm. they make enough $., & We All no from gramar to universities a teacher makes or breaks the class!

  • There's no Superman and no June Cleaver, either. I taught for 33 years: I was a union member. That didn't mean one of my students didn't stay home 106 days in a simple year because his mom let him. My union membership didn't mean that one of my eighth graders came to class so stoned I couldn't keep him awake. If you want to blame teachers explain why 140,000 kids in 2009 missed a month or more of classes in the NYCity schools.

  • Blaming teachers is akin to blaming dentists for kids' cavaties! Parents who let their kids eat candy all day and never brush their teeth or floss, should they be blaming the dentist when their kid's teeth are rotten?

Private schools give the illusion of doing a better job, because they test kids prior to registration, and only accept those with high I.Q.s. Furthermore, they do not accept limited-English students or those with learning disabilties.

  • @MsJanetWood No, but teachers can help more than they are.

  • Jezz, If I had the money (and kids) I would also send them to private schools. I don't know why on earth does that bans her from expressing her opinion or reporting the news on this matter!

  • All she is saying is 1/5 of the schools talked about in the documentary is better than public schools, what is to question is if the statistiqe is telling the truth, or if she does.

  • I don't understand how the schools her children attend have anything to do with her reporting the stats about education. Does her sending her kids to a failing public school some how vest her with the authority to comment? Would it solidify her part of the struggle? #UnfoundedQuestions #ThatIsAll

  • What does Katie Curic know about rotten schools?

Do her children go to a public school?

Oooh silly me, I forgot, the elite send their children to PRIVATE SCHOOLS.

    JUST ASK BARAK OBAMA.

    HYPOCRITES ALL!!!!

  • @mkmason2002 look there is nothing wrong with Katie Couric just reporting the news, she doesn't even have a position in this matter, she is just merely stating the facts as that is her job, ever heard of Amendment 1 from the US Bill of Rights, Freedom of Speech if you don't like her don't watch it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey lets blame everyone any anyone else: the schools, the teachers, the policies..

What about PARENTS? You don't know about it unless you actually teach students, but some of these kids are out of control, disrespectful, and unmotivated....these fundamentals addressed at home! If a parent doesn't take interest in their OWN child's education then why should they expect everyone else to care more for their kids than themselves?!? At least help your child build intrinsic motivation ...

  • @Parx73 Totally agree with you!!! At morning drop off last week had a parent pull up with NO child in the car. She drove all the way to school and didn't even realize she had left her kid at home. Guess she totally ignores her kid in the car. Had another child tell the principal, "My daddy said I don't have to listen to you and do what you say." Education starts in the home!!!!

  • "not division" you say? Unity won't create good education for my kids. You don't cut out the fat when you've got unity--look at any single party state if you want proof. We need division. We need diversity. We need school choice.

  • what the movie doesnt say is that charter schools dont accept kids who have learning disabilities so naturally their overall performance will be significantly higher

  • @ssny1234, I've been in the training business for 6 years, and I get training myself. There are many alternatives if your company doesn't pay for it. There are books, and there is cheaper on-line training. If it is going to help your career, you can pay for it yourself. And if we weren't wasting so much money, we'd have more funds to pay for training. In short, *TREAT K-12 EDUCATION LIKE ANY OTHER INDUSTRY*.

  • @simplulo Unfortunately not every teacher can pay out of their own pocket for extra training. Especially when they don't get high salaries to begin with and like teachers in my district, haven't seen a raise in 3 years. Right now my district is offering alot of training and we all take advantage of it, but next year there won't be as much because of serious budget cuts which will also include teaching jobs.

  • @katepeachtea Objectively? Of course not. They'd grade teachers/schools as objectively as they grade restaurants, auto manufacturers, universities, banks, or any other service provider. Competition drives those companies to strive continuously to provide better service at a lower price. Competition made US universities the best in the world. Why shield such a critically important industry as K-12 education from competition? Yes: I know parents who pulled their kid from school due to easy As.

  • Look up this video on YouTube (put these words in the search box):

RSA Animate - Changing Education Paradigms

  • Teachers don't get training? Their credentials require at least a Bachelor's, if not a Master's degree! You don't hear complaints about private schools, the universities, or the business training industry. Teachers grade students, why don't we grade teachers and schools? Teachers give good students gold stars, why can't we give good teachers bonuses? Teachers flunk poorly performing students, why can't we tell poorly performing teachers they're in the wrong job? Empower parents with choice!!

  • @simplulo do you really think the parents will grade the teachers objectively? are they going to give a "good" grade to a teacher that was tough and actually challenged their child? are they going to give a "bad" grade to a teacher that gave their child an easy A? no.

  • @simplulo Training doesn't mean your required teaching degree. Training includes workshops given by school districts to increase your teaching skills, learn new ways of teaching, keeping up with new requirements, and so on. These trainings help improve your overall teaching ability and keep you up to date so you're not stuck teaching math in the 1995 style. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts districts can't afford to give alot of training to their teachers. Thanks to tax payers who vote NO!!

  • Katie, which private school in NYC do your daughters attend? Hmmmm?

  • Unions are Killing this country.

  • Ugh...Katie Couric.

  • Great for Katie to say. Wonder where her kids go to school?

  • Unions support the weak.

  • Brown vs. Board of Education ... we definitely have a diverse school system but at what cost?

  • "charter schools only do better then 1/5 public schools"

most likely the people trying to get into charter schools only have the option of attending that 1 public school...

  • @aacchhiilllleess

I think the point was that if you have 5 kids go to 5 different charter schools only one of the kids would do better than in a public school. That is only 20% out of a 100% of the students in Charter Schools would do better.

  • FREE THE PUBLIC SCHOOL KIDS!! FREEDOM! My son's Catholic school charges $5,500 per student per year. The public schools cost $7,000 in Arizona to $18,000 in Detroit to $22,000 in New York. 95% of Politicians send their kids to private. The public school aren't good enough for their kids but they are good enough for ours!? Give the education dollars to the parents not the public schools. FREE THE PUBLIC SCHOOL KIDS! Let them go already. FREEDOM!! The Democrats are owned by the union.

  • @1drdelvalle Private schools give the illusion of doing a better job, because they test students prior to registration and only accept those with high IQs. Also, problem students are immediately expelled.

Public schools attempt to teach everyone, including students with learning disabilities and/or limited English.

  • Would you BLAME the POLICE OFFICER working in a HIGH CRIME AREA?

Would you BLAME the DOCTOR working in a hospital with a lot of SICK people?

Would you BLAME the LAWYER working with a lot of CRIMINALS?

Would you BLAME the BORDER PATROL AGENTS for all the ILLEGAL ALIENS that are crossing the border?

Would you BLAME the SOCIAL WORKER with a lot of WELFARE CASES?

    NO? Why not?

Because there are other FACTORS beyond their control! STOP BLAMING THE TEACHERS!

    DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

  • @MsJanetWood Good point. There are MANY dedicated teachers in public schools. The rules and laws set up for public schools restrict teachers too much. The SYSTEM is the thing that needs to change. Pencil-pushers and politicians should stop making the rules.

  • I'm getting freaking tired of these damn ads that run before the videos that I can't refresh past. I just mute the sound and click away for 30 seconds.

  • Michelle Rhee, who is praised in this film, has spoken publicly about covering her students' mouths with masking tape as a way to keep them quiet, while she was in Teach for America. She even laughed when she explained how some of the students bled when she removed the tape. This is truly disturbing.

  • @fashionista0709 show me the info.

  • @comedycreator100 Google "Rhee talks about her early misadventures in teaching"

  • @fashionista0709 and that means that she did do it? Please give me more info.
