Really, that's what we can call a truly Egyptian dancer.. Fifi is one of my favorites ever!! I live in Egypt since long time, and I feel sorry that even here things are so changed now.. women come to dance, and they are so fake.. oh, good God! Sometimes, it's a shame what some people they do to their bodies/faces to try to look either better or younger.. silicons, fillers, surgeries of any kind..

See Fifi, it's a real mind/spiritual "lifting"!

My incredible teacher "Andrea" who snapped at me "No club dancing" when she kindly agreed to critique me before a performance (she sat and watched quietly, legs crossed, sipping tea while I painfully pretended to be a dancer - I have never been so terrified and humbled in my life) I have never forgotten!!! My two Goddess' keep me on the "path".

You know I've watched this video so many times and each time I have taken for granted the professional quality with which this moment was captured - on a first take!!! The fluid slow and fast zooming in and out, the held moments, the big shot, the tight shot and the flourished finish. The camera literally dances in syncronous rhythm as Fifi interplays with the band, the audience and the camera - truely phenomenal!!!

At her workshops in Dallas she specifically said "not the knees". The knee shimmies are from Raqia Hassan- who wasn't really teaching and influencing until after Fifi's time. These are true blue hip shimmies; as Mona Said, Shoo Shoo Amin and many others used to do all the time. More challenging to learn and teach than the knee shimmy. I honestly don't know how to describe them in written word.

So is it a bent knee shimmy that where you use your oblique muscles to drive it? so if you were say to stand on one leg you could keep it going? I'm intrigued!! I was taught a shimmy in a deeply bent knee first - then straight leg later on (which i find hard to keep going).

There are also bent knee shimmies where you are stabalizing with your hamstrings and using abductors. To make them with really big hip movement, keep the glutes really really loose. Fifi often did them with the knees a little straighter and her glutes a little tightened, which resulted in more "jiggle" above the belt.

Aaaaah, yeah i tend to go for the mega hip action and mega floppy glutes - i find in a straight leg shimmy my glutes are tighter and so are my thighs (plus with straight leg you get the full body 'vibration' more than a bend leg shimmy and i think that its less attractive. Sounds like fifi's shimmy is somewhere in between?

I recon it is a hip shimmy but with only slightly bent legs. So something between hip and knee shimmy. However, I recon her legs are totally relaxed like in a hip shimmy. Knee shimmies are more concentrated, involve thigh muscle and won't last forever like these. Just lots of practice and relaxation I recon.

Would you call a hip shimmy the one wiht the deeply bent leg? I find knee (straight leg) shimmies very hard to continue for long periods, where as bent leg its a doddle now that my muscles are strong. I mean if your hips are moving lik ethat, you can't 'not' move your knees.

legs don't have to be deeply bent in a hip shimmy. Even slightly bent legs activate hips. I use 2 ways to check if it is a hip shimmy or not (and that's what I tell my students): 1) hip line should be rocking 2) when you look down you should see your knees doing backward and forward. if you can't see one at a time, means you straightened your leg. Straight legs shimmies tend to use more thigh muscle, that's why they are more concentrated and tiring.

you have to move your knees anyway for any shimmy :) just whether you straighten them completely or bring back to a slightly bent position - that's what makes the difference. Hip shimmy is more about maintaining momentum, not so much muscle strength. That's my theory anyway. Now if you do a hip shimmy with slightly bent legs and slightly tuck in your pelvis, you will get a wobble around your belly button. that's another variation I came across when experimenting

yes thats what i thought - and what i've found, i mean, how could one shimmy without moving ones knees? So you're just basically saying keep the hips lose and wobbly (thats what i do anyway), i find this fascinating as ther eare SOOO many types of shimmy - this one i like the most to look at.

@misswishstorm - I have to say thats the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. More talent to move a fleshier body than a thin one? Actually I would say that this dance looks BETTER on a body like this (Which by the way is NOT fat, you have to be very fit to shimmy that long for a start), and fifi's body is feminine and has produced TWO children and still looks incredible! Hard bodies suit modern dances more than this wonderful old school belly dance.
