THANKYOU SO MUCH!!! You explained it A MILLION times better than ANY OTHER tutorial I have tried!!! THANK YOU!!! My iPhone is slowly more reflective of my Legend of Zelda obsession :D I owe you my first born child! [[not really, but thank you!!!]]
Hi I am just needing some advise I do everything right and then wen I get right to the end and double click on the m4r file it says to "choose the program you want to use to open this file" and there are like 10 options and I choose iTunes but nothing happens, wondering if anyone could help me by any chance????
Hi - thanks for this. Very clear. However.... I now have the edited songs in my Iphone and Iphone ringtones tab on Itues. I have synche'd the Iphone but when I go to the sounds options on my phone aI do not have the song I downloaded - all that is there is the crappy Iphone default sounds. Is the track stored somewhere else or am I doing something wrong?
I have converted the file and done all the other procedure, it is there in the itunes under ringtone, but still cant find the file in the settings/sounds/ringtone :(
@Shooter13JMH yeah that happens sometimes, it normally happens if you already automatically sync your iPhone and music, as opposed to manually syncing.. the only real solution is to deal with the resyncing and switch to manual syncing of the library and ringtones unfortunately.
This was SOOO useful! Thank you sooo much!! It was especially useful how you even showed the step where you go to edit and can change the type of format you would want to create. Great job!
this is starting to piss me off..i had no problem doing this before but now after i sync a song to acc i right click the song on my desk top or in the windows explorer i try to rename it but it does not show me the full songs name or the file type as m4a so i cant even change it to m4r i have windows vista 7 can u help me ??
so if i dont have 'my iphone' thingy in the um, itunes thing, do i just pop it back into itunes? and download it to my iphone? or? let me kno soon plzzzz
I'm using iTunes 9 now. No AAC option. But i know that by clicking consolidate file i'm kinda doing the same thing. After I do that, however, my file turns into an MP3 format file and when i rename to .m4r, its okay. The problem lies when i drag my .m4r file back into iTunes. It does not show up, as in it is not added into the itunes library whatsoever. Tips?
@1ShadowRock9 The option to create an AAC version in iTunes 9.1 is now located under the "Advanced" > Create AAC Version - this is the best way to do it, as you can't simply convert an mp3 into an AAC or an M4R file just by changing the file extensions, it won't work. I've updated the video accordingly. thanks!
Brilliant video. Followed your steps perfectly, although it doesn't work for me. Have to hunt down the copied file then after-all-is-said-and-done I am unable to put it into my phone. I get error messages. Perhaps there are different methods for different countries??? (I'm in Canada). I know it's not your instructions because you did a perfect demonstration.
the ringtone was successfully made into the library..but when i click my iphone icon..and ringtone icon...the synchronizing of "selected ringtone" is not availble!! why is that?
I've gotten everything to work. Only problem is ITunes wont let me delete the original for/new clip. When I right click or hit the delete button nothing happens.
okay err, i tried to drag the ringtone from dekstop back to my itunes, it just couldn't sync.
and also i tried to drag the ringtone to device in itunes, it is there but it doesnt show in my iphone. i have dont it several times but it just couldnt work.
the best thing for you to do would be to manually add the file/ringtone from the File menu. Remember valid ringtones show up in the "Ringtones" category.
A few people have issues syncing the ringtone to the phone, the only solution really is to try various types of syncing, automatically syncing or manually syncing. As this differs between person to person, depending on settings, the best way is to try a few methods
@applewbanana you can't have followed the tutorial properley, you need to make sure you show extensions for known file types in windows, the tutorial explains.
thank you SO much!!!! that helped me so much... just bought my iphone yesterday, and since i am 13, i really wanted a ringtone .... this way was so easy, not to mention free! :) :) :) thank you SO much. 5 stars!
hi there, my customized ringtone, doesn't seem to show up in the ringtone options of my options. It's visibile when I view the ringtone section on itunes however it doesn't seem to show up on my iphone nor the ringtone menu.
unfortunately this happens sometimes, keep trying with different mp3 files, try lengthening the time or shortening, it really is a case of just getting them to work sometimes. I find that 1/10 ringtones dont work for whatever reason!
On your iPhone head to Settings > Sounds > Ringtone and scroll to the bottom to see the list of custom ringtones, if all has worked, you should see the ringtone there.
This used to work for me...now when I open in Windows Explorer after making an AAC version it's a movie file. When I double click it, it opens up a little window where you can play, pause, etc. and doesn't feed into iTuns automatically...anyone know why?
Remembering that you do need to change the AAC file to an M4R file, this problem is likely because your AAC files aren't associated with iTunes anymore. Right Click the File, > Open With > iTunes should solve that!
dude i did everything you said thank and it worked except for the last part everytime i sync the custom ringtone to my iphone it keeps saying "iTunes has stopped working"... need help... =[
Not sure how to help here, as it seems to be a system specific problem. Try re-installing iTunes, or rebuilding your iTunes library. I've heard that it can be an iPhone specific issue that sometimes can only be resolved by wiping the phone and starting from scratch!
hey. thanks really much. i had this problem where i couldn't change the .mpr manually. i tried downloading a lot of converters but they did not have .mpr. but the converter is no longer needed.
Yeah, but for the benefit of people who need full instructions on how to rename the extension, its all there... thats the reason why I made the video..
hey i did evrything right..the song is converted to m4r and its on the ringtones section but wen i click sync it dusnt sync it to my phone not even wen i try 2 drag the song to my iphone..can u help please?
Nicely done. Excellent attention to detail. Just added a few custom ringtones. I am really starting to love the iPhone but the ringtone situation is ludicrous. My 5 year old Razr V3 could do mp3 ringtones. Greedy Apple and AT&T. No ringtone revenue for you!
Hi, for some reason...songs in my library can't be found. I can't even pick a song on my 3g iphone cause the songs are all grayed out. I was able to pick a song from purchased file and it worked on one song but, not the others.
If I go to "playlists" towards the bottom and click on a song. I get this message: None of the selected files can be converted because they cannot be found.
I'm not sure what the issue is there, have you made sure the computer is authorized with itunes and your device? that sometimes grays out all of the playlists and the songs, so they are unavailable.
Not too sure on this one, if it's worked in the past I can't really see how it could literally stop working! Odd, I've had a few songs not work at all, but only the odd song though. Afraid I can't help on that one! apologies.
Brilliant instructions fella, 10/10. I've gone through a few but yours was concise, succinct and spot on. Thanks very much mate, you've made me very happy! :oD
hey, I'm stuck. I've been following your instructions bit by bit but when I try to change the .m4a to m4r it doesn't work. First of all, when I copy it to the desktop, I don't see the .m4a ending. it goes alright until i have to double click on the 'm4r' to get it to go straight into the 'ringtones' section it just keeps playing the full version in the 'music' section am i doing something wrong?
if opening the .m4r version simply keeps opening the original version of the track, you can try to import the .m4r version directly into itunes through the itunes menu itself, other than that I've never experienced that issue before, the only issue that has occured is that some mp3 files simply do not convert or import at all!
I CANT DO THIS ON A MAC: I CANT SEE IT ON RINGTONES :(((((((
