when mike pinder left the group the moody blues lost their heare and sole.this song is awesome on the lp, John needey pinder and thomas to and to his voice
OK the singing's not fantastic and The Moody Blues have never, in my opinion, been The Moody Blues since Mike left, but how can someone keep talking throughout a concert? They shouldn't attend such events if all they want to do is chat.
John is a wonderful performer and song writer, but his voice used to be better than this. Perhaps it is the strain from all the touring year after year. Makes you wonder.
the reason this song doesn't sound right is that john can't sing real well- when ray and mike pinder helped with the vocals this was a very strong song- I saw them play it in 1972- and it was a show stopper. now higher and higher and this one a a couple of other standards are greatly dimished because of the vocal quality- and while just can still sing with the best of them- john is very hit or miss and his hi jinks on higher and higher are laughable.
No offense to them, but wow, their ability to do music has gone down a lot in older age. If you hear the original of this song you will know what I mean!
@YoungNubb I agree... I'm a Moodies disciple...been to 3 shows...but they miss Ray..... and age is catching up.... they need a long break... get back to the orchestra
I am so glad that this video is on YouTube! I love this song. I saw them a few days ago in Orlando on April 1. This song was amazing! I wish that this song was included in the live 2005 album. I'm 23 and it was my 3rd time seeing them (certainly not the last time)!
Thought you would like that. But seriously, it was a great song. I'd heard in the past there were problems with it in concert so I was apprehensive when they started. It was wonderful though and as I said it was well received! Hopefully looking forward to POUGHKEEPSIE in October!
Yes, I know what you mean! I keep checking MBT to see when they go on sale. It is not a great venue, but at least another chance to see them. Not too far for me to travel either.
When I saw them earlier this month, they played this song much better. To me besides NIWS, this was the best song of the night! They received another well deserved standing ovation!
I just found this place and am in love already. berrygirl, I too am a Lodge fan. John is a year older- and finer. This song is a long-time favorite of mine.
Oh wow! They performed this song live and as recently as last October! I'm blown away! I hope I am as fortunate that my boys will surprise me with a lesser known classic when I see them live in Boston Next month! I would give anything for a "hell freezes over tour" that would reunite them with Mike and his melotron to perform "Melancholy Man"!
I was assuming this was before Pinder's departure, but I guess not. I mostly was wondering why the camera did not focus at all on the keyboardist. Was there no keyboards?
I'd had to buy that obnoxious chatterbox broad seated nearby a footlong, (spiked with Ambien/and some quick set cement) had I been there. How inconsiderate she was (and will be forever now). Thanks for postin anyway.

Lovely song. And the Moodies sing it so wonderfully. Thanks to John for writing it, and to the Moodies for singing it. Just beautiful!

Nice to see this one being done again.
Saw them do this song in '72 - with Pinder.
The EGBDF tour.
The chorus resounded nicely...and John Lodge totally owns this song in concert.

It's on the album "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour"
I advise that you get the album because that version is excellent.

Yea, I know. They're finally doing all the background songs; maybe it's because Ray left? They would then need more filler songs
Kevtheguitarist 4 years ago
I agree Kev. I would prefer this to "Isnt Life Strange"
What I think is strange, is that they waited till so late in their career to some of the great old stuff. see "higher And Higher" on you tube. Wow!
davdna 4 years ago
Holy Crap! I can't believe they did this song. it's rather obscure, but excellent.

Now if they could find someone to sing along like Ray or Mike. Sad
