Exquisite rendition, second only to Victoria de los Angeles.
Translation: Sleep tiny one, little black boy who doesn't want to sleep. Head like a coconut, little coffee bean. With pretty freckles, big eyes like two windows that looking out to sea. Close your tiny eyes, frightened little black boy. The white bogey-man may eat you up. You are no longer a slave! And if you sleep a lot
The master of the house promises to buy you a suit with buttons, so you can be a groom. Go to sleep little black boy, head like a coconut, little coffee bean.
Thank you MusicaParola for the words and the translation. :) I have not heard this before. Shirley Verrett's treatment of this gentle lullaby is incredible. She hangs onto every single note with passion.
vaya mierda

Bellissima versione, tutta giocata sui "pianissimo", molto delicata.....

Certainly my favourite of all the recordings of this lullaby I've heard so far. Beautiful.

It is difficult to honestly compared a soprano and a mezzo soprano. To me this a valid interpretation, equal to that of los Angeles.
But listen to Bayrakdarian's version of the same!
