I don't own a pair of drums, but I REALLY want to learn and hopefully one day be as good as you. For now, I'm in my room learning with some pencils. I think I need to start saving for those drums!! Thanks for the massive help!! :)
If you put an O'Ring on each drum they will sound a lot better. They take the ring out of the drum. They are just a plastic ring. Great video's and enjoying them, getting me back into playing again. Thanks.
i can play some stuff on the drum kit, i love playin but now i wanna learn those rolls i see people play like really cool ones used by the opeth drummer and many other people not the basic 4s jus very cool soundin ones i donno wat they r can u please help me!!!!!!
hey man, i just have to put my 2 cents worth of praise in...
ive always had an affliction for 'air drumming' and only now that i have a drum set, have i gotten to really grasp the basics of percussion, and i would have to say thats mainly due in part to your awesome videos!
also thanks for some of your lessons they really got me flying when i started out, now im using all techniques and things you've taught me to create my own music, you havnt just taught me, you've given me a purpose in life! you the man tod <3
ur really helping me out. I can sing, dance, play guitar, and bass, and trumpet. I started to play drums just two and a half weeks ago and i can already play very well thx to you. My friends say i have natural talent. I might have some but ur a great help! plz continue until u cant teach no more!!!!
If you are right-handed. But, whatever works it's best to be as ambidextrous as possible so if you are already playing with your left, don't stop, just add being able to do it with your right as well.
i just started playing on the drum set not too long ago, ive played snare and quints in the marching band. thanks for ur videos they are veryvery helpful!
Always very helpful! Thank you for taking time out of your life and helping those in need (of drumming lessons). Wish there were more people like you.
I really love your videos and have learnt heaps but I am still having trouble seperating my feet and my hands. Do you have any exercises that I can practice to seperate them.
Time and practice. What worked for me was just practicing lots of different beats. I started with the normal beats and practiced them from slow to moderately fast. I bought books of beats so that I had lots to practice to minimize boredom. Once that right hand could do straight eight, shuffle and swing on auto pilot I moved on to fusion beats.
I've also heard good things about Gary Chester's New Breed book. I'll buy a copy and check it out and maybe do a lesson based on it.
I just use a double-bass pedal on mine. It wasn't really designed for it but it works. The Roland V Drum kick trigger has an extra input jack. This allows you to buy two triggers and put a single bass pedal on each and chain them together into one input on the brain. I prefer to practice with my double bass pedal because that is what I use on my acoustic kit.
There are lots of good electronic kits, but I haven't played any since I got my Roland V Drums years ago, so I'm not up to date. Keep in mind if you want to jam with her she will need a P/A or a drum sound reinforcement system. Guitar amps will not cut it for electronic drums. For practicing, headphones are great (for your sanity and her enjoyment).
Thank you so much for taking the time to put these vids on youtube, it's a great way to start for beginners I think, without having to be put on a waiting list for a drum teacher in reality.
I play guitar, but I have recently purchased Rockband and started messing around with the drum kit. I didn't know where to start but you have really helped me. Thanks.
Hooking up the rockband drum kit to your computer so it acts like an electronic drum kit is like actually playing the drums. This lesson did not help me with rockband, it helped with my actual drumming. Once again thanks for the lesson.
Well you said this 8 months ago but it worrys me , a rockband drum set is pretty much nothing like a real one. The closest video game drum is the ghwt drum set and thats not really like it. The system is like this. If you can play real drums , you can play ghwt/rockband good. If you play rockband/ghwt then your not nessesarily good at the drums.
well the kits are not alike, but thats how i learn songs for real drums is from rock band. i used to suck at rb drums and then i started playing real drums and now i rule at rock band
This is not always true... I've been drumming for like three or four years and I can barely play those video game drums. Mainly because they're nothing like an actual set though.
Wow this thread won't die. I've never played Rockband but if the kit lets you practice limb independence and use all four limbs then IMO it will help your drumming and sounds like a great low cost first kit.
These videos are rad! I am learning things really quick watching them, showing them to my brother and girlfriend too so they can learn along with me... Thanks Tod!
your videos were great Scoop! May i just request if possible if you can flash the notes longer while you demonstrate it and if you can include the counting for it. Thanks a lot !
Yo wasup! im from the UK jus started drummin a few weeks ago, picked it up fairly quickly me thinks! your videos have really helped me alot, i dont suppose you've made any on drum fills i wouldnt mind learning a few more! can u reply with the link if u have would be much appreciated! thankz agen
I'm a beginner dummer down in Australia (very beginner). I'd like to thank you Tod for sharing your knowledge. You don't have to do this and you don't get paid. So props to you my friend. One big thing for me is learning to hold my sticks correctly for things liek double strokes etc... i'm sure had I not learnt this early off, it would have been far harder to change down the line.
You might mean "cadence" which is pretty close phonetically to "Kadens". A cadence isn't a single beat. Think of it as a drum "riff" for marching band. We would work out two or three cadences for a season and play them in between songs or when moving the band in parade formation from point A to point B. Usually 4-16 bars long and played repeatedly usually with a distinctive pattern that can be inserted at the end to kick off a song.
When using eighth notes on the high-hat, all is fine and my bass rhythms have style and complexity. But, when I change to quarter notes, it all falls apart.
With classic rock being my focus, this is a necessary learn. Do you have any techniques that will help me gain independence from my right hand when using quarter notes.
Finally, thanks for your lessons. My budget is low so it's a great relief that I can continue learning without the cost of formal lessons.
Sometimes just sonic differences can help, so loosen up your high hat foot, hit the hi-hats more on the edge, this will let everything ring more and your brain will be more willing to not hit that eight-note. Then go back to the easiest beats you know and try those. If it still doesn't work, play the beat without your left hand. Just get your hi-hat and bass going. Be patient and give it time, don't expect to get it in an hour or two.
I just can't get the smile off my face, seriously, i've been watching 5 videos of you so far and you really are amazing! You are a fantastic drummer and to think that you give these lessons for free is just really generous, seriously, i think you're amazing!
I thought about giving lessons on YouTube as well but seeing you doing this changed my mind (that's a good thing btw!) I recommend you to everybody i know who wants to play the drums!
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between wood and nylon tipped sticks and is one better to use on an electronic kit? Fantastic videos. Keep it up.
I would say use wood on your electronics. To me, the point of nylon tips is to get a brighter sound out of your ride cymbal on an acoustic kit. Others may want to chime in with their opinion.
By the way, I really like how you show the notation of what you're doing too. It obviously helps us visualise the beat as well as learn notation. Excellent.
Great lesson. Hey, what video editing program do you use? And what format do you save to? It comes out really good and the audio is well in sync unlike a number of other youtube videos?
I'm using iMovie on the Mac. I save out to MP4 format typically 320X240 and I knock the audio down to FM quality mono. I think I just followed the youtube guidelines for uploaded video.
roland's electronic drums sound great. i personally own their TD-12, and they sound awesome. yea i'd rather play a nice acoustic set, but in your dorm room, these are much better lol
Roland is the only brand I've ever owned and played. I know Yamaha makes excellent acoustic drums and I would expect decent quality from their electronic kit. The Yamaha DTXpress III kit seems to sell for around $800 new. I don't think that includes a throne or kick pedal. You'll also need decent head phones. Look for one used or a "scratch and dent" sale, and I would consider $600 a good deal.
Hey thanks uncle tod! your lessons are great. ive been just starting to play the drums and i want to buy an electric drum set. i was wondering if you know of any good electric drums that are at a reasonable price for a beginner. i was thinking of something under $500?
I think it might be hard to find good electronic drums new for under $500 (but I could be wrong). You might want to look for a good used set. Make sure whatever you get includes all the pedals, stands and cables you will need. Be aware that the older generations of electronic drum kits didn't include hi-hat controllers or any cymbals so I would suggest buying locally so you can try before you buy.
The kit is the original Roland V-Drums with the TD-10 brain but with the TDW1 expansion pack. The PA is an all in one unit from Carvin. It is very convenient as it has a built in 4 channel mixer and amp. It even has a built in battery so you can play without AC power.
