Male Garibaldi will aggressively protect their nest sites which are basically a mat of algae. I'm guessing that the spot he keeps swimming back to is his nest. One reason why they protect it so fiercely is that other males will sometimes invade and eat the eggs they are protecting. (the females don't protect the nest at all)
Hope this clears things up a little =) Thanks for posting such an interesting video.
i snorkel dive on the mendocino coast--never had such clear water---always turbid. what underwater camera do you have. where were you--in baja??? think about a musical score. dr. john
This video was taken in La Jolla, Ca ( san Diego) This was a very good/calm day. This area is also slightly protected by a sea wall and I was only at about 30 ft. I am using a Canon S60, noting fancy.
thats awesome you got to do something like that(Go under water,NOT CHASE THE FISH)im going to be a marine bio. Sooo ill get to experience this as well :D
It's pissed off because you were getting close to the nest. they only behave like that in late spring and early summer. look for a reddish patch on the rocks close to it, with yellow eggs. it's fun to let them grab your fintip and shake it like a dog.
it was nice to experience the under water feeling, i have never scuba dived only snorkled. i am now a little concerned about the fish and their anger management skills hmmmm
I was on Webkinz and it said 'Gerabaldi's have laws pretecting them' so I wondered why they're so special. I know now it's because they're beautiful! At 1:03 I loved the side-view. Thanks for taping this, gottascube!
