Dude acting smart ur taking the wrong generation thing completely out of context. Maybe pp just don't wanna sift thru shut to find some good. Back then the weirdos u complain about, beiber and gaga, at least stayed inside and no one saw them daily on tv. I'm not sayin be ignorant just agh I'm done tryin to make sense of ppl.
You know, pessimism is self-fulfilling. If you think the world around you sucks and the past was so great...then you are setting yourself up for disappointment.
The world today is great in its own ways. You just have to be open-minded and look for the good instead of brooding over the bad.
@BeverlyHills2ndGen i hope you dont mean bieber and gaga when you say "look for the good," and i hope you dont mean being hormonally decadent when you say "be open-minded," cause if you do then open-mindedly looking for the good would have the price tag of ignorance and debauchery, particularly amongst teenagers, not looking for a scrap here, just thinking aloud, someone ought to criticize the pop culture abnormalities we idolize today
@dragonbukid: I most certainly do NOT mean Bieber or Gaga or any other pop tart when I say "look for the good."
There is plenty of good music that is nothing like that: bands like Muse, The White Stripes, and Arcade Fire have all done excellent work this past decade. And they're just what I thought of in 10 seconds.
You say "someone" ought to criticize today's pop culture...but just look at YouTube comments: it's NOTHING BUT criticism! Everybody's so damn pessimistic these days it's sickening.
@BeverlyHills2ndGen nah, youtube comments are more like hate or like comments and not objective criticisms, and by the way criticism is not pessimism since more criticism means more improvement, provided it's a constructive criticism
@dragonbukid: That last sentence is a BIG qualification. Granted, constructive criticism can be helpful, but how much of what you see under YouTube videos is constructive?
Then there's a big dilemma: how do you define "objective" criticism? I mean, everybody seems to think that the artists they like are amazing and those that other people like are garbage. I don't like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga, for example, but what right do I (or you) have to say that they are "objectively" bad?
@BeverlyHills2ndGen simple, look at their impact on pop culture, bieber is a spoiled rascist, and gaga is a decadent homosexualist, but everybody else thinks their cool and wants to be like them right? being objective or unbiased, you get to look at what others dont want to (flaws, insignificances, cultural impact, etc), and then in turn criticize them, well not on youtube of course, point is, (de)constructive criticism is not about liking or hating, at least it shouldn't be
So many of these covers were the Brits "thank you" to their influences from the '50s when these guys were teenagers. I've always thought it amazing that a bunch of English kids saved R&B and '50s music.

The Hollies are the GREATEST. The energy and electricity of this performance shows their versatiity. The Hollies were the BEST of the British Invasion!!! They could sing any genre and cause a fuss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@KinDeRDrummer: Why? If you were born in the 50s or early 60s, you might have never even seen this clip, since relatively few people had televisions back then, and there were no personal computers.
But thanks to the MODERN technology of YouTube, you are able to find this clip (and countless more like it) with a few clicks of a button. You should appreciate what you have today.
Allan's a wonderful singer, the Hollies are great, the best looking and most underrated band from the British Invasion. But nobody can touch the Beatles, they leave everybody else in the dust.
I agree with mickyhollie 110% .....Allan Clarke can sing better than anyone in the Beatles, and Tony Hicks is a more accomplished guitar player than George Harrison ( sorry, George )...their 2 and 3 part harmonies are unique and unmatched in pop/rock music...The Beatles songwriting put them over the top ( as per their catalog of hits ) I'm a huge Beatle fan, but a REALLY huge Hollies fan...
I wouldn't say Paul sung more beautifully on ballads eg: Mary Skeffington and I Thought Of You Last Night (In The Hollies Style) make my spine tingle everytime. Maybe sweeter is more the right word.
Maybe sweeter sounds better. Paul can't do sexy and seductive like Allan, but Allan hasn't got that soft, melodic voice suited to ballads like the one Paul has.
Hey bearis I forgot to say. Tony Hicks is better than Harrison but of course you dont understand anything you taliban, Allan Clarke has a loud voice register, even higher than John and Paul and of course neither compare Elliot with Ringo nor the vocal harmonies, Understood ALA ?
Enough with this nonsense of who is better and who isn't. That is all subjective and will never come to a conclusion. Both the Beatles and the Hollies were unique and talented bands. They were both different, and it would be silly if they should even try to sound alike. Having a loud voice register doesn't make you a better singer, and Allan paid for it in the end when he lost his voice. I'm saying this as a Hollies fan and a fan of Allan.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hey bearis26, the beatles were better composing but not singing, so if you wanna talk about music you should know somethimg about it. I highly suggest you to learn something about music or dont talk if you dont know, are you arabian ? I ask because just the muslims may be so ignorant
The New Musical Express concerts of the early 60s are fantastic timepieces of many great and rising bands before they got REALLY big. The Hollies are a perfect example.
I'll admit this is not the best version, but it is not terrible, like a couple of idiots here said last year. You have to remember, this is live. How is a song going to sound like the studio version when your singing and playing live?
Brings back memories of the best times - I was at this concert at Wembley Arena, Allan Clarke made me go weak at the knees then and he can still do it!! Thanks for posting this video.
Love The Hollies and I love Tony Hicks, he was such a cutie, and this song is great. But have you ever herd the Icelandic version of it?...It's not as great as this but the text is allright (if you understand Icelandic:P) The man who sings it is callt Raggi Bjarni. If you would take the Icelandic text and translated to English than it would sound something like this: ''cool jacket, cool jacket....it's a little bit funny if you have herd the real version and then the Icelandic;)
Sou fã de tres bandas inglesas,OS HOLLIES,THE ZOMBIES E THE ANIMALS.I like tree english bands HOLLIES ,ZOMBIES AND THE ANIMALS,but i dont like BEATLES,and STONES
Bobby Day did the original but I think the Hollies made it a bigger hit. Like how the Beatles took the Isleys' "twist and shot" and popularized it (rockified).
and about mcfly I don't know. I mean, this is more how the song has to be, but their version is more... fun? (apart from that I used to be a McFly fan.)
Yes Bob Day performed the original version in 1958. It was his only hit. The song was then a number 1 hit in both the '60s by The Hollies and the '70's by the pedophile Michael Jackson. Was also a minor hit by the Gay rocker McFly. The Hollies probably saved the song from utter invisibility.
sub par vocals and harmonies, the playing doesnt sound all too good, granted the time it was shot could have something to do with it, but w/e its music people can disagree its all subjective :)
This was a live performance with screaming fans all around. This isn't going to sound like the studio version. If you watch the whole NME concert from 1964, you'll see shaky performances from everyone, including the Beatles and the Kinks. At least they and the Hollies were singing live, which is more than what I can say for the idiots who lipsynch performances today.
the beatles carried it off though thats why they are most renowned band of all time. Yes alot of artists have to lipsynch TV performances due to timing issues/cost and even just down to studio techs.
In the sixites it was done for contract issues between the record companies and the TV studios. Today, if they are under a time constraint, they can cut the song down. Some bands and singers lipsynch during concerts, which was common with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the other pop tarts of the time. There were also bands that did so, but sang live vocals to the accompanying recording. Either way, it's misleading. The audience will know it's the studio recording instantly.
yes which is common knowledge, you're not some know all deity ive worked and work experienced in various parts of the music buisness. you need to get a life or just grow up youve been fighting a non-needed battle on here for 2 years now lmao. its MUSIC its all subjective WHO CARES?! all i did is voice an opinion on mcflys LIVE performace and THIS live performance and that TO ME Mcfly's version is alot better performance wise and sonically
And what you have posted is common knowledge, and you are not a know-all deity either. Did I say something to insult you? Explain that. I thought you were having a simple discussion with me, so I replied. If you didn't want to reply, then don't. No one says you can't respond to an old comment. You're telling me to grow up and get a life when you're the one getting angry when someone responds to you civilly. I could care less about McFly.
Well if its common knowledge stop going on at other people voicing an opionion again and again. I'm not getting angry in the slightest. And obviously you could care less other wise you wouldnt bother defending against a comment made about them and the Hollies
I made my points already, too. If you were done commenting, then you didn't have to respond further. Everything that is commented on at YouTube is pointless in the end. You can't stop a person from commenting, and even I get the private messages from people over comments I made long ago. I just respond and that's it. I was also voicing my opinion, too, and telling you what I knew, too, as you did. There was no intention of starting an argument. I'll leave you to troll away elsewhere.
I wrote in you tube,-several times before-,thar Hollies (and Allas Clarke in specdial) was the unique band at the level of Beatles.Allan Clarke was the best lead singer in all pop rock times.
A mi no me coloniza nadie.Respeto la opinionn de los demas,a rajatabla.Pero del mismo modo hago respetar la mia.Y tu "tonito boludo" de que yo "stop writtingf this kind od coments" te lo podes cuardar.Por favor
No one was bashing the Beatles here. Xoxstrephy was simply saying that the Hollies are one of a kind. That's not being detrimental to any other group.
Eric Haydock appears to be playing a 6-string bass. His bass lines also were quite unusual, listen to Just one look, more inventive than McCartney at that point in time.
Found it in the net! Fender Bass VI, tuned an octave below a normal guitar (so yes, a baritone). Bit like a Fender Jag with tremolo! It says the Beatles used one from the White Album... come to think of it... think I'll check out Hey Jude on David Frost.
Ok fair enough novoda.Everybody has there own taste. If the people that dont really go much on this live performance by the hollies, i suggest you listen to the actual record track on the hollies album stay with the hollies.Listen to the stereo mix at high volume.Out of this world.
This is a live version performed in large stadium in front of screaming crowd. How good do you expect it to sound? Have you heard their recording of it?
Mcflys version was total shite, what the hell is wrong with you.U got shit in ya ears or something. The hollies version is way way way better by far.I havent heard any group match up to the standards of the hollies version yet. What do you expect anyway.Allan clarks great vocal and graham nash high soaring harmonys, bobby elliotts clever drumming and tony hicks guitar work all combined into one hell of a very talented group. The hollies forever!.

the best one is the one by bobby day deffo

Yes Bob Day performed the original version in 1958. It was his only hit. The song was then a number 1 hit in both the '60s by The Hollies and the '70's by the pedophile Michael Jackson. Was also a minor hit by the Gay rocker McFly. The Hollies probably saved the song from utter invisibility.

sub par vocals and harmonies, the playing doesnt sound all too good, granted the time it was shot could have something to do with it, but w/e its music people can disagree its all subjective :)
kinney1990 2 years ago
This was a live performance with screaming fans all around. This isn't going to sound like the studio version. If you watch the whole NME concert from 1964, you'll see shaky performances from everyone, including the Beatles and the Kinks. At least they and the Hollies were singing live, which is more than what I can say for the idiots who lipsynch performances today.
sapphiretaurus 2 years ago
the beatles carried it off though thats why they are most renowned band of all time. Yes alot of artists have to lipsynch TV performances due to timing issues/cost and even just down to studio techs.
kinney1990 2 years ago
In the sixites it was done for contract issues between the record companies and the TV studios. Today, if they are under a time constraint, they can cut the song down. Some bands and singers lipsynch during concerts, which was common with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the other pop tarts of the time. There were also bands that did so, but sang live vocals to the accompanying recording. Either way, it's misleading. The audience will know it's the studio recording instantly.

yes which is common knowledge, you're not some know all deity ive worked and work experienced in various parts of the music buisness. you need to get a life or just grow up youve been fighting a non-needed battle on here for 2 years now lmao. its MUSIC its all subjective WHO CARES?! all i did is voice an opinion on mcflys LIVE performace and THIS live performance and that TO ME Mcfly's version is alot better performance wise and sonically
kinney1990 2 years ago
And what you have posted is common knowledge, and you are not a know-all deity either. Did I say something to insult you? Explain that. I thought you were having a simple discussion with me, so I replied. If you didn't want to reply, then don't. No one says you can't respond to an old comment. You're telling me to grow up and get a life when you're the one getting angry when someone responds to you civilly. I could care less about McFly.
sapphiretaurus 2 years ago
Well if its common knowledge stop going on at other people voicing an opionion again and again. I'm not getting angry in the slightest. And obviously you could care less other wise you wouldnt bother defending against a comment made about them and the Hollies
kinney1990 2 years ago
Ps im not going to reply anymore. I'll leave you to troll over the video over pointless things.
kinney1990 2 years ago

I love The Beatles....so clam the fuck down, and next time don't judge someone because of the music they like.
xoxstephy13xox 4 years ago
No one was bashing the Beatles here. Xoxstrephy was simply saying that the Hollies are one of a kind. That's not being detrimental to any other group.

Eric Haydock appears to be playing a 6-string bass. His bass lines also were quite unusual, listen to Just one look, more inventive than McCartney at that point in time.
popitinpete 4 years ago
I was just wondering about that. Are you sure it's not one of those Baritone guitars?
HumGuitar 4 years ago
Found it in the net! Fender Bass VI, tuned an octave below a normal guitar (so yes, a baritone). Bit like a Fender Jag with tremolo! It says the Beatles used one from the White Album... come to think of it... think I'll check out Hey Jude on David Frost.

This is a live version performed in large stadium in front of screaming crowd. How good do you expect it to sound? Have you heard their recording of it?
sapphiretaurus 4 years ago
nothing beats the original
mcshadowreppine6 4 years ago
We can't compare Mcfly with Hollies.Every it played in your style.I like more Hollies verse, but Mcfly I like too and is not total shit.
novoda 4 years ago
Mcflys version was total shite, what the hell is wrong with you.U got shit in ya ears or something. The hollies version is way way way better by far.I havent heard any group match up to the standards of the hollies version yet. What do you expect anyway.Allan clarks great vocal and graham nash high soaring harmonys, bobby elliotts clever drumming and tony hicks guitar work all combined into one hell of a very talented group. The hollies forever!.
