  • @s0ggyrice

Question, what about situations were you are in say 4th gear and you wanna go to the 2nd gear? Can you still do the Heel and Toe thing or do you prefer any other methods (ie Neutral, break and then 2nd? or Push cluth + break etc)

  • my car is so old and the pedal placement is so bad i cant even properly heal and toe.... but i do it anyway :)

  • can you explain why i must do heel and toe and what happens if i don't do it. shifting down by just clutch and brake ?

  • @hasoozel Absolutely nothing. You'll only "need" to use heel-toe when your racing or downshifting for control. A Blip will occur which is a rev matching way of controlling throttle by clutch-brake-gas allowance.

  • @hasoozel If you downshift often and are at a higher rev range when doing so it is beneficial to use heel-toe to put less strain on the clutch while downshift. Since you wont be going from 7k-2k rev instead with the blip you'll do more of 7k-5.5k rev range. Making a smoother/faster/more effecient shift.

  • @hasoozel also like rclewis said, its a racing technique, you don't need to use that, but if want to know why you use that on race, its because before a corner, the driver needs all of car's braking capability, so he uses the downshifting to help braking, using the force to rev up the engine to slow the car, but if you simply clutch and shift down, you have the chance to lock your tires, so you blip the throttle to make it smooth

  • @doggdoggy thank you so much

  • @doggdoggy if i simply clutch and shift down (not using heel and toe) do i harm or damage the clutch, gearbox... or anything ?

  • @hasoozel nah you don't, if you stay inside the limits of your car... well you have a small chance of damaging the clutch the whole time you are driving but you wont have higher chances doing the downshifting, if you want practice rev matching first and then go to heel and toe

  • This is a difficult technique to get it right as your blips must be precise (not too much nor too little).....it's best to master Rev-matching first to get a feel for how much throttle you should give

  • i thought heel and toe was for saving the engine now turning :S becasue it saves the engine from such high revs so fast

  • I like this video! A lot of the videos I see don't have a shot of the pedals. The pedal cam helps out A LOT with learning this. The slow-mo at the end is also great. Thanks!!

  • @sunzhenyufrank this technique is considered advanced, and you should not try it, unless you have enough experience. For me, it was when i needed to go faster from where i live to work( rular area) so i learned it... Allways drive safe and do not put yourself or other drivers into the risk of an accident... Find a nice parking or some place without traffic and give it a shot, like this guy. Stay safe and wear a seatbelt...

  • @TkMToM1993 you mean, you would hate to drive on the correct side of the car

  • acceleration sounds like an ariel atom

  • @poketraderjack Thats because of the supercharger used in the older Mini Cooper S, the newer one uses a turbo

  • ahha now I know why it's difficult for me to do heal-toe is because my clutch isn't as direct as yours

  • ilove drifting

  • nice drif for all

  • I just got my licens a year ago, so I'm still a new driver, can I ask what's the purpose of doing this heel-toe driving?? I mean why do you want to down shift in that way??

  • @sunzhenyufrank its manly for racing as it dont slow the car down and gives it a nice gear change and the power is there 2 leave the turn in a hi rpm so u can come out of the turn a lot quicker :)

  • you are the ninja of stick shift

  • I would HATEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE to drive on the left side of the car....

  • purpose of heel n toe is to make sure your RPM doesnt drop too much or u'll lsoe momentum at exit of corner.

  • did you... did you shift from 2 to 4?

  • @MrAdnan252 yea he did.

  • or you could just buy a 370 Z.

  • couldn't this also be done using a clutchless downshift?

  • @schleim5 no - a clutchless downshift cannot be done while braking because there is load placed on the transmission in the same way that load would be placed on it during acceleration. so just like you release the gas when disengaging a gear without the clutch, you must also release the brake for the same reason.

  • @rodneystar Clutchless down shifting can be done but it takes timing between the engine and transmission rpms. Braking would slow the transmission rpms so yo would have to slip into neutral before braking to get rid of the tension. The reason I asked is because if you watch the footwork of racecar drivers with unsynchronized transmissions they do down shifts without the clutch. In theory I would think you could do it with a street car but a lot more difficult because of the type of transmission.

  • This is actually a really interesting technique, dad tried to show me but he failed. I'm anxious to try now =D

  • Do you have to brake first or brake after the clutch is in?

  • @BreastsIsBest try not to think of it as a shifting technique - rather think of it as a braking technique. So you are braking the whole time, the first thing you do is start braking because you want to slow down, the rest of the stuff goes on while you are braking, the brake pedal is then the last thing to be released.

  • so when you brake, the rpm is not correct for the lower gear you are shifting into? that's why you rev the engine before you throw it into the lower gear? this is only if you don't plan on slowing down for the turn right? do you do this when slowing down behind a car in front of you in a straight path? how angled does the curve have to be when i need to do this? will i spin out on a highway if i don't do this at a slight curve?

  • @RunsLikeaNose no you wont spin out on a highway. racing drivers are at the limit of grip while going round a bend, they need the smoothest shifts possible to maintain balance and avoid going over that limit of grip. on the road the goal of this technique is preserving transmission parts, reducing wear and tear on your clutch and gearbox by rev matching before you release the clutch.

  • " you could uh... you could upset the bala..... well you spin out" lol. The first time I drove on a track thats exactly what happened when I didn't heel toe

  • hi is heel toe for racing not regualr driving right

  • @12344richard heel & toe is better for your car to down shift and if you get in a slide say on the ice to get your self straight again buy having a higher reve which will straighten you out its also called a drift technique called power over

  • @12344richard it can be used to good effect on the road to reduce wear and tear on transmission parts. in racing it is absolutely essential.

  • 12 people push the clutch in ALL THE WAY every time they shift a gear.

Wait...this guy does that too. STOP GRANNY SHIFTING soggy!

  • @foozybearz Yeah, I learned how to push the clutch down only the necessary amount when shifting when a I first learned how to drive a standard car.

  • @zlee415 I know right? It's just one of those things you pick up when you get to know a car and it makes for better driving and shifting. It's not something for racecar drivers like brnb thinks

  • @foozybearz So what? This is a normal car not some high performance race car. Unless he has some kind of performance clutch/tranny then by all means.

  • @brbn93 Why do you think you need to have a racecar in order to shift without putting the clutch to the floor? I did it in a Dodge Neon, Volkswagon Jeta, New Beetle, and even a Saturn..... It will make your clutch last a lot longer, provide faster shifts, and it's smoother. But hey if you want to wear your clutch out by extending the time it takes to lock with the tranny be my guest.

  • Soggy you should put a video up to demonstrate push starting. I know everybody seems to think it doesn't work on modern cars anymore but it does. It's possible even when not on a hill. I could start my old neon by putting my foot out the door and kicking the car backwards and then popping the clutch in reverse, it would start right up with a little effort.

  • great tutorial!

  • i do this but with releasing the brake entirely and press the gas with my right foot, then release clutch on the target gear

  • Great vid! It does depend on the position of the pedals and seating position though. In the Toyota Vios, I'm a bit too tall, so even sitting all the way back and all the way down, the steering column gets in the way of my knee when I twist to put my heel on the accelerator. I can pull it off in the Megane RS, but generally it's easier if you've got a floor mounted accelerator. But of course you already know all this. Just for those who don't. =)

  • whats the easyest way to shift? never driven a manual before

  • I cant do this... I brake deeper while pressing the accelerator... so its not that smooth...

    Nice videoS anyway...

  • is that a mini cooper?

and i would love to lose control!

  • would be more helpful if you showed the tachometre

  • Nice job

  • Nice video, this actually is the best Iv seen on trying to teach this technique.

  • that was crazy

  • so in a racecar the point of heel and toe is to get a smoother downshift and to keep the rpm high so the acceleration is faster right?

  • what is the main use of heel and toe in racecars and like on the road, please answer!

  • hey have you ever worn out a clutch? & how many miles?

  • niceeee!....

    thanks dude!

  • @ 3:24 you could end up with massive under/over-steer which could end up in a spin :)

  • Nice driving skills, man. And thanks for the video, helped me a lot. =)

  • when do u burn ur clutch?

  • So effectively this should be easier not only on your syncros but also on your clutch because you can release the clutch quickly due to the rev match yeh??

  • Can u do this with a 8 size shoe

  • Great video dude!

  • soo every drivers know this?? :D

  • definitely supercharged..

  • is your mini a drive-by-wire system? the lag of the DBW makes this skill a lot harder to try and learn for me

  • Can anybody tell me what REV MATCH means?

  • @AlexEttelis Rev matching is basically a smoother/efficient way of down shifting. I'm not sure if u ever drivin a stick shift or not, but If you downshift without matching the revs, the car will jerk, resulting in a unsmooth downshift and in some cases doing this a number of times without matching revs can ruin the gears. When u downshift, the rpms will automatically rise, so buy matching the rev B4 a downshift u will have smoother downshifts without putting extra stress on the gears.

  • @lotusboy24 Oh ok, dats whats up, but most of the time the rev match technique is used when braking from high speeds. Some people do it all the time tho(me) because its just a habit of mine, but yeah, as long as your not racing its really not mandatory, because in regular driving the gears aren't spinning as fast, so its possible to have smooth downshifts without rev matching. REV Matching is mostly reserved for aggressive driving/racing. And good luck on getting ur license man ;-)

  • @AlexEttelis (REV MATCH=raising the RPM's before downshifting.) I'm not sure if u have drivin a stick B4, but when u downshift without matching the revs, the car will jerk, and in some cases, if done on a regular basis can ruin the gears, Cause when u downshift, the RPM's automatically rise. So buy raising the RPM's (REV MATCHING) before u downshift, the gears are already spinning at the right revolution before the car is in the lower gear, resulting in a smoother, more friendlier downshift .

  • @lotusboy24 I still don't have a driving license but im having driving lessons and when i down shift i basically take my foot of the gas press the break and at desired speed clutch and downshift.. no jerking no nothing

  • @AlexEttelis Oh yeah, and practice makes perfect, but when u really get comfortable driving, I would say in a empty lot or somethin, U should still practice ur heel toe/REV MATCHING technique, cause if ur anything how I was when I first learned how to drive a stick and drive it with confidence, u'll prolly find urself needing to REV MATCH, because after dat I became a very aggressive driver. So I REV MATCH almost every time thru my downshifts. good luck again on ur license bro B)

  • @lotusboy24 well i still haven't tried heel and toe yet, since this is illegal thing (test-wise) im probably not gonna try untill i get a license i watched this video and other out of curiosity

  • nice mini

  • If you don't break hard enough your brake pedal wont be pressed in far enough and it will be hard to reach the gas. Hard to do, especially if your gas isn't very sensitive or responsive.

  • awesommeeee!!! ma dad got a evo 10 but its 2 powerful 2 drive n i wanna learn 2 drive it.. add me on fb.. york jackson :) teach me more plzzz

  • Nice vid. Car sounds great too!

  • so when you chnage from 4th to neutral that is when you tap the accelerator?

  • i like that thanks

  • this is good to know if your vehicle is stuck in snow or ice...if one tire is stuck on ice you can "trick" your vehicle to supply power to the other wheel that has traction by using the brake and gas pedal at the same time...this worked for me when my jeep had one front and one rear tire on ice in 4 wheel drive

  • i thought this kid was mclovin but looked closely and nope just a kid with a cooper.

  • @TheZoelzer2 thats supercharged.

  • @Blueball0120 sorrry lol supercharged cooper.

  • anyone know the benefits of heel toe double clutch in one move, been able to do this for a while, i believe it saves the syncros but not sure. any help would be much appreciated

  • Probably just to help keep torque while re-accelerating after you slowed down.

  • @Eclipse1988 there you go!

  • is that what i have to do to downshift? cuz my car wont let me downshift.. its like there is something blocking it :S

  • your mini sounds nice bro

  • @s0ggyrice, does this damage the tranny at all? Since it's doing alot of the same things as power shifting doesn't it?

  • @champion909xxx In my experience, no. I often heel-toe as I slow down in everyday driving, but more so, I just rev-match my downshifts. Which sounds more likely to damage your tranny, releasing the clutch slowly to bring the revs back up to speed, dumping the clutch when you're over a thousand RPM off, or blipping the throttle to match the revs to your gear and speed, then let out the clutch?

  • during heal toe method is to keep ur rpm's high so that when u exit ur turn u arent losing power as u exit not while or before ur turn it has to b done not while continuously breaking. once u heal toe to the gear needed then continually press the gas. if u r in a rwd then even amounts of gas is needed not a full on pedal to the metal or else u will lose control and spin

  • Sounds like an R53 Cooper S?

  • @jshek00 John Cooper works , maybe..?

  • if you keep clicking 8 it looks like he's whacking off haha

  • @mrrrxxxxx Seriously? Do you only call it a car if it's a V8 and over 2 ton? The mini-Cooper S is a nice ride, small, agile... I don't see any reason why it's not a "real car"..

  • @Despereaux01 It's a nice ride if you're a woman. Perfect car for ladies, but for racing..come on!

  • this has no use on the road, because if its an emergency and you don't want to unbalance the car, just push the clutch in and leave it there...

  • I can't do heel toe, tried a lot both driving and parked in my car and in my set of PC simulated pedals. I can't reach the accelerator while pressing the brake with my toe, I don't know why, maybe I don't have enough flexibility in my ankle.

I can't reach it neither if I press the brake with the left half of my foot plant and then with the other half the gas. Any advice?

  • @altoso99 grow bigger feet lol

  • what exactly does this do?

  • click my chanel to see my mini doing some snow drifting :P

  • Good instructions, thanks for making this video.

  • or you can simply shift to a lower gear on mid-turn

  • @hjen The idea behind cornering is to break before the corner, then accelerate through it. Shifting mid-turn isn't a fast way of doing it

  • Or..you could just drive an automatic! he he just kidding.....

  • what is basically the point of heel and toe?

    i realy don't know..

  • @germankid93 they have a new thing you can buy that plugs into your cars computer that helps a lot I can't remember the name of it but it was SEMA product of the year in 2009

  • god damn I hate these stupid drive-by-wire things that produce lag between pressing the pedal and actual engine speed increasing! it makes it almost imposible to do on my Mk4 jetta

  • im glad i have a 3rd foot

  • well uhhh well well uhhhhh well uhhhhhhh u could spin out lol!

  • Good to see somebody that knows how to drive. I use this technique all the time. Skill like this really set good drivers apart from the bad. When I see a ricer going 30mph and then drop it into first without rev matching it just makes me laugh. I was driving some folks home one night that needed a ride and they didn't even know I was driving a stick until they got out of the car.

  • @hinesdeal82291 Thats some sneaky hand work from you or some blind passengers :P but your right not sure about the procedure in the US but in the UK you are taught all this stuff and tbh if your not a good enough driver to know how to make seamless rev matched ratio switches just stick to autos

  • @artx4321 I wish the US policies were similar to the Uk's, there would be a lot less problems on the road if people were actually taught how to drive. It's nothing but auto's here in the US because nobody has any idea how to drive. The only people that drive manuals are car enthusiasts and truck drivers...that's about it. Let the idiots drive their slush boxes.

  • @hinesdeal82291 I'm not familiar with the US road test but the UK one is quite challenging it is common for people to fail at least once. ( Ego boost = passed first time :P ) I believe it helps you drive better because your more in touch with the car

  • @artx4321 The U.S. road test will enable anyone that can turn a wheel and press a pedal to be on public roads, it's pathetic to say the least. I seriously know a couple different girls that when a situation occurs on the road they literally let go of the wheel and close their eyes even if the situation can clearly be avoided...these same girls have cheaper insurance than me because (women get into less accidents according to stats) bullshit. I could go on forever about bad drivers in the US.

  • @hinesdeal82291 well feel safe in the knowledge that at least you can drive and that those people will never no the joy of a manual

  • dont u have to push the gas when u let off the clutch when u move up a gear even know u rev match?

It looks like after u rev match u just let off the clutch i did that one day and stalled the shit out of it going 20mph through my neighborhood because i thought i was in neutral.

  • you should be sponsored by mini! Seriously! You deserve like a new S coupe or something, you have so many views

  • I had a truck that wouldn't idle and i learned how to do this accidentally just trying to keep the stupid thing running as I stopped for traffic lights. Works good for a last minute downshift into a curve while braking you can blip the throttle.

  • It's very useful for say making a right turn off a road or you're coming up to a light and you want to make a left and the advanced arrow comes on and you need to downshift to make the left while slowing for the corner. Of course you could just clutch in and coast through select the appropriate gear and worry about it on the exit of the turn. It's really just a personal preference thing to me.

  • @hartholzfanatiker just cause im not a racecar driver doesnt mean i cant use it. and its not a totally useless skill you can use it whenever you want to if you feel like it. sometimes it comes in handy. just one example, u can use it to make your ride smoother for yourself and your passengers instead of letting the clutch out slowly when downshifting. just cause you dont need it doesnt mean its a useless skill. i dont NEED to know 4 languages for normal use but its not a useless skill

  • @s0ggyrice Agree!!! I'mk a Nissan Sunny 130 Y driver and I always use this skill to make my ride smoother while cornering... It's really useful and it does work to help u to save brake pad because u juz need to depress brake pedal for juz awhile and soft...

  • @s0ggyrice I am watching most you vids tonight and you swallowed yourself @3.00 mins exact......you don't HAVE to rev match the car in every corner to down shift......what you don't realise is that when you accelerate sir...the car with jump and move with every gear change when you give it gas because you are surging ahead.....it's only obvious the car WILL call back when you down shift at speed and high rpms at that.....ppl spin out when they hit a corner too hott and don't set the car up

  • @s0ggyrice Hey, the hell with the idiots, you give good lessons, and you can never be a "good enough" driver. It is fun knowing these things :-p. Keep it up!

  • @s0ggyrice

I personally heel-toe all the time in my Cobalt SS/SC during normal driving. If you're a spirited driver who likes to nail the twisties, heel toe helps for diving into the turns and downshifting to the optimal gear to rocket out of the apex. I also use it for normal downshifting while braking so I can continue to brake while I downshift.

  • @s0ggyrice people just dont understand the art of driving anymore, they like their 8 speed automatics with extremely numb power steering and traction control that never lets you floor it

  • @n9athan If only automatics could have that many gears. 4+OD is about as good as I've seen with planetary automatics. Some electronic manuals, now, have 6 gears, but I definitely get you. Manual for life.

  • @hartholzfanatiker :

Why should this be useless in normal conditions? When you rev-match the clutc, it won´t have to bridge too different revs so it won´t be worn out as in case of normal downshifting without heel and toe.

  • @hartholzfanatiker Lol, no, you're wrong. A modification of this technique is very useful when you live in a city, say, in the middle of the mountains, where you get stuck in the middle of a traffic jam while on a fifty-degree angle hill ascent... it's either the technique or crash with the guy who's behind you...

  • @alabaska182 u 2, but this time for real

  • @11thacrASSASSIN what the hell u are talking about... first ..u should read ..and understand. Again, this what is shown in this vid has not much to do with a racing technique, u can use at such a car..and this driving situation..road and so on.. specially for this what is just shown..! And darling..in Europe..the most cars are not automatic..like in US..ok..so.. don´t tell us europeans how this works !!

  • This guys great! Really appreciate the video's.

  • great video s0ggyrice :)

  • I don't understand why you have to give some gas while downshifting.

  • @klb2000000 your just raising the rpm to match the lower gear, so when you let the clutch out, the rpm and gear line up perfectly so theres no jump. make sense? its kinda confusing the first time unless you've done it or been in the car

  • @mastersusaf Well I drive a manual car and I know that when you switch to the lower gear while rolling too fast for it, it will "jump" but I don't really understand that technique lol. Thanks anyway for trying to explain it to me. I appreciate that.

  • @klb2000000 jump in your car and try this out : go about 30ish mph in 3rd gear, push the clutch in and down shift to 2nd geaer, the car will jump and your rpms wil go up. Now that is a normal downshift. Now do the same thing, go 30ish and push the clutch in to downshift, this time give it some gas before you put it in 2nd, when you release the clutch this time, the rpms will line up ( a little practice) and it will be a smooth downshift. Thats what he is doing, but he is braking at the same time

  • @mastersusaf OH ! Now I get it lol. Thank you really much for the explanation. So you want the RPM to be approximately the same as when you downshift. So the car wont jump that much.

  • @klb2000000 thats right! when coming into a corner like that, if you down shift without making it 'smooth' you can loose control, so this technique he is teaching is the safest and fastest way to get through the corner and prepare for accelerating out of one. Glad i could help :)

  • hard to practice aggressive driving

  • you got really short gears so its easy to do at slow speeds, which make it easier to practive. My 350zs gears are so long its hard to really practice since i can hit 70in second gear. I need go go upto VIR. Nice driving mann.

  • WTF, I wanna be rich and spoiled and have a fancy car too!

  • @vikingablod1016 one can dream

  • @vikingablod1016 its a cooper lol go get one haha there like 18k for a type s

  • I though the whole point of this is if you stick a lightened flywheel on the motor it helps prevent the rev dropping too much on those high reving jap motors when changing gears!

  • I LOVE THE SOUND OF A SUPERCHARGER!!

  • fuck u ita pussy thing i can do that in an izuzu elf truck!!!!!! im from philippines

  • @warrenleo123412 Youre dumb... You can heel toe in any manual. It's a racing technique. Your comment shows that youve never been to the track much. And btw... who cares your from the philippines. lol Peace!!!

  • that sounds like its supercharged, is it?

  • @karter969 yes it is

  • Comment removed

  • really good driving man

  • How long of practicing would you say would get me to a comfortable legit manual transmission driver

  • @daneshskater101 one hour in a parking lot, three hours on back roads, five hours in light traffic, and maybe a couple of hours in the highway. after the first couple trys and failures you will have the basics figured and you can get out and do real driving. for the first bit you should plan your route very carefully and avoid places where you might have to stop on a hill.

  • @daneshskater101 could take you a day could take a year depends only on u

  • if u upset the cars balance, it will go oversteer. in drifting, theres a technique called clutch kick. u have to upset the cars balance so that it can oversteer. its just one of the techniques of drifting. very nice tutorial man. im gonna be a drifter one day so i have to learn how to do manual and im gonna try the heel and toe too

  • @Mclarenf1lover123 then you should know that a ff car like a mini cooper cannot hold an oversteer, and that doing your clutch kick would be the dumbest thing ever. you would just lose all your traction in your front wheels and not be able to steer

  • @Mclarenf1lover123 i know a FWD car cant hold oversteer lol. i nvr said anything about the mini cooper with oversteer. i was just finishing the guy sentence in the tutorial at 3:20 to 3:30. im not stupid :P

  • Ur a good driver..... Lol wish I was that good last time I tried driving stick I was making the Honda buck lol

  • If you are rev matching the clutch has to be out and the car in neutral to rev match the engine and tranny. That's why they call it double clutching a well. Other wise you're just reving the motor, not the tranny. Right idea, wrong technique

  • @MrF1fanatic what are you saying? if you rev the engine in neutral you don't rev the tranny, thats why its called neutral duh. its the same EXACT thing as revving it while shifting down. the only reason you would double clutch is to save wear and tear on the clutch by not revving the engine while it is engaged. but if you are racing a car double clutching will be the last thing on your mind as it adds an extra step during a turn. a simple heel n toe as this guy demonstrates is perfectly fine.
