I'm glad I watched. I knew from survival books the parts of the cattail that can be eaten but I never knew they held the toxins (if it be polluted) from the water. I always figured one cattail was as good as the other. Thanks again for the vid!
Only eat the pollen spikes when they are green. They can be found just above the part you tried to eat earlier in the growing season.(Spring) It is attached the stick that you must have found at the end of the punk (the brown part you ate-not edible) Try them again next year. They are pretty tasty smothered in butter salt and pepper to taste. Taste similer to corn on the cob. Hanta Yo! Keep on foraging
If the cattails come from a pond where there are beaver can you still use them if you cook them? Do you think that steaming them would be enough to make them safe?
hello, can you explain the water quality again? I like to do high mountain hiking and im interested in harvesting cattails to eat with fish and other critters in the water. you mentioned a spring into the swamp. will you find cattails along springs and lakes too and would those be pretty safe if like you said there are no farm animals or beaver. Thanks. good vid

Today I was bored so I picked the fuzzy part of a cattail, boiled it, put it in my mouth, spit it out. It tasted terrible. lol
