What Koreans wanted was stringent screen process and make sure there's no contaminated beef coming Korea way. US govt pressured Korean govt to make the screen process far more lenient, allowing greater chance of contaminated beef parts to imported into Korean market. K-govt agreed without regards of Korean public to get better negotiation on cars.
That's what Korean public was flaming mad about. For Korean govt to once again undermine Korean public for the sake of its national interest and for American govt to pressure K-govt without regard for Korean public safety so their beef industry can make more doe. Free trade allows both countries to share the same market. Common Americans do not realize Korean are third largest importers of US beef. Korea buy many part of cows that other nations do not eat such as backbones, tails and some nerves (some intenstines) as well. They are very prone to Mad Cow Disease. That is why Koreans very sensitive.
Our neighbor, Japan, also restricts some beef imports and apply their own testing/restrict some beef to market. Can Korea do the same?

The beefs that are being exported to South Korea from United States under the Lee Myung Bak government are beefs from cows that are older than 30 months of age, which are vulnerable to mad cow disease. Such beefs are illegal for sale in developed countries, due to its potential danger to human health. You're not eating the same kind of beef in McDonalds. PropagandaBuster, once again, i think you're missing the point and not realizing what's really going on. Koreans are not boycotting US beef. What Koreans wanted was stringent screen process and make sure there's no contaminated beef coming Korea way. US govt pressured Korean govt to make the screen process far more lenient, allowing greater chance of contaminated beef parts to imported into Korean market. K-govt agreed without regards of Korean public to get better negotiation on cars.

Market cannot screen the meat coming from foreign country. If it was the other way around, if US was importing Korean cars or beef, knowing it had problems to begin with, would US or it's public allow Korean products in without a stringent screening process just to get better position on exporting US cars to Korea? There is something wrong with the beef. US beef farms have had a number of occurrence of mad cow as well as foot and mouth, just like Europe. Have you seen docu's or been to beef farms in the US? The standard of the way they raise their cow is atrocious. Why do you think there's a ban on US beef in number of countries including almost entire Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Japan. They import Aussy and New Zealand beef instead. And no Roman's did not exercise protectionism as we know it today.

Thank you for your kind words and your English is excellent. You write English better than many who have English as their mother tongue. I am not offended by the rude and hateful comments. I think they are good as it reveals the rot in the cultures they write from as well as the depravity in their lives. But most of all for some odd reason I find them amusing. I know I should not laugh at their misfortune.

South Korea and Koreans are not exactly known for their fair trade policies; they dump a lot of their electronics on the US markets while they restrict sales of US manufactures and US beef (even there was no documented human cases of Mad Cow Disease in the US) and at the same time, we are nice to them by supporting the defense of South Korea against North Korea.
The South Korean government realized that they shouldn't bite the hand that feeds them.
Those protesters haven't.

Also keep in mind, that even if you consider this 150 of possible associated cases is a worrisome number, you're proving how stupid you really are. You have an inordinately higher chance to die of being struck by thunder. You should worry more about what the beef can actually do to your arterial health b/c of the fat in it, rather than mad cow disease. Really, if your one of those protesters, ask yourself how much research you did in the problem before u joined in that mob? I wouldnt bet on much

Free trade allows both countries to share the same market. Common Americans do not realize Korean are third largest importers of US beef. Korea buy many part of cows that other nations do not eat such as backbones, tails and some nerves (some intenstines) as well. They are very prone to Mad Cow Disease. That is why Koreans very sensitive.
Our neighbor, Japan, also restricts some beef imports and apply their own testing/restrict some beef to market. Can Korea do the same?

It is an issue because South Koreans want free trade to send items to the USA to sell, but do not want free trade when it comes to sending beef to Korea to be sold. Let the market place decide what should be sold, not a mob in the streets.

Thats stupid. We aren't pissed that you don't want our beef. We just think its funny as hell. We have close to 300 million people in America, and at the very least 150 million probably eat that beef on daily basis. Even if the susceptibility to it is .01% there would be 150000 people who contracted it. Keep in mind that the amount of cases that have ever been recorded is at less than 150 cases. And even those 150 can't be completely directly associated with true Mad Cow disease.

Also i just wanted to say, how you mentioned that you should boycott korean made products if we boycott american beef. Well thats a bit differnet if u ask me, korea products such as cars, microchips, etc.. all are products that pose no real threat or danger in any manner to the american consumers, its mechanical, but beef with the US past history of mad cow disease although said to be mad cow free has some risk, so its a different matter if u ask me.

junofarc: where i find the hypocracy in koreans illogical ramblings is that fact that mad cow was over 4 years agao. cases of bird flue in korea, however, happened this year. Do koreans eat korean chicken? i think so. And if the koreans want to continue such anti-american protests, i will personally push the US government to pull troops out of korea and let N. Korea take over. We don't need to pay for the protection of korean crybabies who are hypocritical and lack basic knowledge of logic.

To name a few, there was the event where two drunk american soldiers ran over two middle school girls on a pedestrian lane, that in my view sparked the whole protest events and so on. Please dont get me wrong, were grateful for the support America gives, but sometimes i guess alot of koreans feel that Korea is becoming america's slave with all these new changes because of the FTA. For now, i dont see any problems with the FTA, as long as it does not bring risk or danger to the country.
