Basically what makes it ska is the style. The guitar play a skank where they play on the downstroke and mute on the upstroke. The bass play a kinda walking bass line and the drums do their own thing.

It's a Ska band. It's basically just an assortment of instruments (beyond guitar and drums) used to create a song. SM specializes in songs with a meaning, at least more meaning than that of Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber.
