Laugh at the Pacer all you want. Detroit copied a lot of features off of this car that are still used today. The Taurus in 1986 was very similarly styled and Chrysler used the cab-forward design to increase interior room in their Concorde/LHS/Intrepid vehicles.
You have to sit inside a Pacer to realize how wide, ample and confortable it is, outstanding. I would proudly own one. Those mindless sheep that lack any real tastes of their own (they copy all "their" tastes from the "majority" to avoid being labeled things like "loser" plus the fear of rejection) will never understand why Pacer owners love their cars. Pacer owners are BLESSED people who can see the real value of things: TO LIKE THEM FOR WHAT THEY ARE. That causes a lot of ENVY.
Well, I have to respond to the scoffers on behalf of the late great AMC. First off, I am old enough to have seen this car when it was new. A lot of people I knew thought it was pretty good looking, and said the ride was really nice -with all the glass around you it was "like a spaceship!"
Second - Pacer, Gremlin, AMX -- I'll concede the Gremlin wouldn;t win a beauty contest, maybe -- but AMC cars were at least distinctive in an era of lookalike shoeboxes. Pacer FTW, still want!!
"Everything about the Pacer....the width...the room.... the doors....the ride....make it what it really is.....
________________________
............the most fucking butt ugly POS to ever consume gasoline on the American Road. No wonder AMC went down the tubes backwards......ass, feathers, and all. Who wants to drive a greenhouse on wheels that rides like a four horse wagon? At least AMCs Jeep division survived, and is now making some of the best looking SUVs on the road.
This is a prime example of a car built using ideas that sounded great in the executive boardroom but in fact did not work so well once the final product went to market. "Wide small car" sounded like a great idea in the '70's when everybody wanted comfort but needed economy. Seriously, can anyone tell me how ANY wide small car would not look wierd? The Pacer was also originally intended to have a rotary engine. Thank goodness AMC went with their standard in-line six.
These things cornered as flat as a pancake even at very 'unsafe' turning speeds.
Right turns were a blast, especially with a new passenger. Getting off the line...not so much of a blast. But I'd love to be able to see one of these ''ugly'' (not) things in my driveway again. Next one would be my third. I have owned 2 1971 Buick Rivieras too but I miss my humble Pacers just as much if not more.
Everyone's a critic! This car was as Unique and Innovative as Ford's Edsel, another misunderstood nice car. This "wide small car" was a great idea! They sold well until its last year, in 1980! Remeber, Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder!
Between the 74 Matador coupe and the Pacer, AMC squandered their paltry reserves on a lot of tooling for cars that were just 4 wheeled freak shows. This was the beginning of the end of AMC, some would call this a mercy killing.
Other than the purchase of Jeep, pretty much everything that AMC did since the departure of George Romney in the early 60's was stupid.
I think everyone was brainwashed by all the jokes etc. in the 70's into thinking it was "the ugliest car ever made" at a time when cars were square shaped, and so it's reputation as "ugly" has stuck, but I think the Pacer was just ahead of it's time. I like the way it looks.
I almost bought one of those in 1977. I did a lot of driving and I wanted the economy of a small car with the room of a midsize. This was ugly as sin but it had what I wanted - except a salesman who was willing to negociate. I wound up with a Pinto.
The AMC Pacer was the ugliest bugeyed gargoyle car I ever drove. I quit a job once because it was a company car. Pacer went 0 to 60mph in 4 1/2 hrs @ 8mpg since the greehouse effect of all that fishbowl untinted glass necessitated running the AC full blast all the time. People got 'see sick' from it. I parked it 2 blocks away from my destination to avoid the humiliation of witnesses seeing me get into it. The AMC Pacer ran best when shoved off a cliff.
It seems that all of the AMC vehicles shared the same platform....even the Jeeps. I had a CJ-7 and if you lookeed inside, you could have been looking at a Gremlin or Pacer from that era.
Car companys discontinued the vent windows due to cost-they were expensive to install. On larger cars full sized cars like Cadillacs, Pontiacs, Chryslers you could order power vent windows. GM started to dropped them in 1969 with Ford being the last to offer them in the 1980s.
@coldplays179 power windows go back to the 40's for the amry in the mid 50's they started putting them in cars but some cars used crank windows up to the early 2000's
@coldplays179 They look like the manual, hinged vent windows (with the latch at the front) that were ubiquitous until the early '70s. I heard that they made it possible to break into a car in 10 seconds.
@Navdan87 I agree with you. I saw someone driving a black Pontiac Aztec today and thought of this post. I said to myself, how in the world would anyone with half a brain be caught dead driving one of these god awlful cars. LMAO
Consider yourself lucky. Do you know what it's like to see Toyota Yaris every second of the day?! What's worse, some people actually try to modify those things! As if they have potential!
These were quirky cars! I always thought it was cool how the right door could open more than the left one! Very subtle too! Just like the Gremlin these also get a corny rep today unfortunatly
Laugh at the Pacer all you want. Detroit copied a lot of features off of this car that are still used today. The Taurus in 1986 was very similarly styled and Chrysler used the cab-forward design to increase interior room in their Concorde/LHS/Intrepid vehicles.

@2010mustang2 thats not what I was referring to, I meant power "vent" windows
aka- the ones that were popular on Lincolns and expensive fords in the late 70s and early 80s
also nick named smoking windows
this pacer appears to have a similar set up
