  • eye contacts invasive an rude an painful tu us on the spectrum

  • Whats all this about eye-contact??

I can look in peoples eyes, but what has it to do with contact? Its hard to focus on anything else besides the shades of color in the iris. Looking into eyes is disturbing contact.

  • I have AS and when I was younger I could almost never make eye contact. But, I forced myself to and, with much practice, now I hardly ever don't make eye contact. If anything people have a hard time making eye contact with me because of my huge, intense eyes. But ya, my point is if you practice it's hard but eventually you'll be able to do it. Now the only time eye contact gives me a sensory overload is when the person's eyes get to close.

  • Now they say I stare at them. It's embarrassing. I suppose I do stare, sometimes. How long should you hold it, really? If others think I don't put work into it, I do. I Watch them. Try to get it. There are things that happen between them that we cannot understand. It's something that is so obvious to them that if you asked "so, mother-in law, could you tell me that submission look I'm supposed to give?" They couldn't say. You are off sync and need to activate that animal instinct. They can tell.

  • Good for that 4 month old. It is welcomed into the spectrum. Eye contact should be personal, intimate. Not forced. How disgusting. Eye contact "codes" are primitive because they are fear based. Not to mention, eye contact is redundant and obsolete. I am engaged and am SO in love with my fiance and I do not even have eye contact with him on normal days more than 3 or 4 times a day on average and even though I like it it still feels intrusive. It is a second language to me which I am proud of.

  • I can make eye contact but save it for initial meetings and certain intervals, like the beginning of a conversation, but really, the ones with low IQ's can waste energy without a second thought.

People of high intellect do not stare people in the eyes every second of a conversation. It is a total waste and so degrading. You are supposed to reserve energy for your higher functions, but that seems to be the problem. There are no higher functions.

  • If a baby does not look at you, maybe it thinks you're dumb. Ever think about that? I remember my parents and how dumb they were. I used to scare my mom talking about being 2 and three months old, recalling lengthy conversations and remembering everything in the rooms down to what color gown she wore, where everyone in the house was. Why should I gaze into your beady eyes? Do you think that is interesting or normal for an aspiring human such as myself? No! It's disgusting.

  • I can't make complete eye contact with people, but that's because I'm extremely shy and timid. ;)

  • Eye contact among adults is ONLY avoided in America. It's not uncommon in other countries for adults to hold eye contact for lengthy amounts of time regardless of gender. I don't get what the big deal is about adults sharing eye contact in America. With babies it is absolutely necessary, as it's a HUGE part of social development, as the video describes. Don't be so ignorant, people.

  • he's scaring me with his eyebrows what's with the judgemental eyebrows?

  • those r some beautiful pits

  • whenever some1 talks to me i just look around their faces constantly like a nervous psychopathe is that normal >?

  • It because there not thinking its just a show or tought to be a law of culture to look at some 1 but it doesnt come from the heart

  • Besides, how do ppl know we're looking them in the eye anyway? When i'm speaking to someone, that's the last thing i consider important. It's enough i have to concentrate on what i'm supposed to say next. You don't need to look 'em in the eye all the time, sometimes you can look them in the forehead, nose, mouth, cheeks...there's no way in hell they can know where you're looking at, only if they are freakin psychics or smtng (you must keep 'em at a certain distance, of course).

  • Most people stare in your face,

    weird that is considered normaal

  • Winter077, you're dead on! I feel a lot the same way you do. Take some prisons for example, if look in the eye of some dangerous inmate (mostly Central America) you could be in real trouble, since they consider it a great lack of respect. Or in the army, if you look straight in the eye of a higher ranked official you're screwed.

  • what's the big fucking deal about eye contact anyway? Eye contact is an intrusive and arrogant behaviour, it's like you are invading our privacy without permission. I only make eye contact with ppl i know for a long time and have good solid trust with, and most of them are women. Excessive eye contact with men is retarded...unless you're a fag, of course.

  • We are talking about a 4 month olds - not adults.

    DrMDK

  • @drmdk sir i doubt this person made it long enough into the video to know you were going to start talking. i personally discovered this browsing the comments.your stare is too much for many aspies commenting here.

  • @drmdk look or eye contacked turns certain parts of the brain for developmentle grooth its like a key into a lock so i know what you mean.i was abandoned at 3 days old. adopted did not bond well with my new family, never liked the eye thing...jeff

  • @Podredo you sir have a problem.

  • @Podredo yes, and they force you to or not. It has to do with submission and dominance, and people don't get this. Oh, she has poor eye contact because she's being manipulative. She has poor eye contact because she's going to challenge you if she looks up. I can't feel contact or not. When I look at someone, I'm looking through them, but I get "intense" gaze every time.

  • @Podredo Aparently it's a Western cultural thing. In some Asian cultures, eye contact is considered rude. Humans are the only species that dosen't find eye contact as a threat. When people keep eye contact with me, I feel really creeped out. I would only make eye contact when fighting.

  • And everyone told me "Look at how well he entertains himself." I married someone on the spectrum as well. I worked so hare with him, he said he could either look or talk as the 2 were "too stimulating," from my 5 year old. But neither could his also "genius" dad. I asked him if he wanted to do anything to fit in and he said "Yes as long as i can still be me." He went to a small, private High School, drives, made friends which he has today with him in college. He is happy. :D

  • I VILL BE BACK.

  • Eye contact to me, is an exchange of energy. it involves deep relationship and love. I refrain from establishing eye-contact with a person I don't trust. I don't even bother to listen to their conversations.

  • I am going to say this is just in an American culture. There are cultures who don't belive in eye contact, such as in Japan. I personally don't want someone staring at my eyes while I talk to them. Just makes things unconfortable in my oppinion. I don't mind the occational eye contact, but other then that it gets annoying. And if your suggesting Autism is a desease just because of some social discomfort, I would suggest doing more research before placing someone in that catagory.

  • Trust me Autism is FAR more than eye contact. It is a difference in the way the brain processes the awareness of social mores, and having unusually literal thinking. They tend to be the "absent-minded" professor types to people who couldn't speak (or choose not to), and cannot tolerate human closeness as it's too stimulating. Or they seem a tiny naive or unusually trusting. They rarely can lie, as they don't see the reason to. I'm a mom of a successful , happy Asperger's Syndrome young man.

  • I would call society sick for they lie and think they can play games atleast autisic kids are pure

  • Eye contact can sometimes feel like staring down a bottomless pit.

  • Most of the time people look like an empty well - very few ones are a bottomless pit.

  • He's talking like Arnold Schwarznegger.

  • I need your clothes your boots and your motorcycle

  • hahahahah

  • Look, my son Josh has severe autism and is still in diapers at 9 because he is more or less aloof and doesn't worry about where or when he goes. My 5 year old has been potty trained for years, and my 2 year old has basically potty trained herself. My son made absolutely terrific eye contact at 3 mos, but never pointed (cannot abstract to a line past the finger), and would look right at our finger whenever we would point. Joshua continues to have great eye contact, and is extremely loving.

  • this could make parents help children from getting worse

  • this could make parents prevent their children from getting worse if anything

  • this is a very helpful video for parents with children who may show these signs.

  • This is the next study for identifying autism by diagnosis, since joint attention was studied & found to be useful for identifying autism at 14 months.

Eye contact length of time along with some behavioral facial expressions offers the chance to diagnosis autism even earlier than joint attention.

How often is autism diagnosed at 14months?

This is a problem as autism can be diagnosed with 94% accuracy at 14 months by testing joint attention alone.

Do we care about that information?
