If the Japanese were naturally bigger in size, they'd be absolutely perfect at the sport.
Football fits right into all of the Japanese cultural strengths. Strategy, unity, and discipline -- all required and rewarded more so in football than maybe any other sport.
there are so many guys who do nothing but return kicks, Josh Cribbs(search this guy), Devin Hester, Dante Hall, and tons of others. sign him today an he'll make some noise.
Hey guys, I played in this league for 2 years while I was teaching in Japan. Ken Shimizu is good, but he is only 5'8 and 165 pounds, runs a 4.75 forty. So, as good as he looks against Japanese players, he wouldn't get much of a look in the NFL. The language barrier is also a huge issue, he doesn't speak English at all.
Another good Japanese player by the name of Noriaki Kinoshita tried to bust into the NFL for the past two years playing the same position, but lack of English and size held him back, even with a 4.35 forty time. But yeah, Japanese are great at football, most likely 3rd after Canada as far as international talent. I hope someday a Japanese player will succeed here like Ichiro did with baseball, but with the language thing being much more important in football might not happen anytime soon.
with the growth of american football, very soon we'll see player like Shimizu and Kinoshita, there national team is on the same level as canadian and american national teams. Even so, he should at last have a chance to compete on a NFL team.
They were like that in Baseball too ... now they have player in the American Major League.
American Football is picking up in Japan and in other countries. I'd give it a decade or two and we'll see Japanese or Europeans in NFL or NCAA 1st Divisions.
There already Europeans and Japanese in the NFL and in Division 1 college Football. Once American football gets more populer around the World it will be more noticeable.
@notredamefan98 of course they are better they initiated it and have a high class professional league for it this beside having mixed nationalities which gives many options to their every play. in Japan it's less than this but they still do just fine and are world champions in 1999, 2003 and finalists in 2007 "USA plays the cups without most of NFL players through". respect for USA creating this amazing sport.
