Scary! But for some odd reason, the scene where the single sparrow comes out of the fireplace scared me as a kid. I have no idea but that sparrow scared me a lot.
Marc, I like the coordination of the score breaking to her audible woes and the score matching her wincing especially the leg movement. It was genius how you matched her doorknob grip with your music. This was a real treat to watch. Wow, Tippi !
@LyleLincoln: Thank you for very kind and thoughtful comments. I did a fair amount of research not only to scoring styles of that period but also studied editing techniques too. I was lucky to have the ASU orchestra and Henry Charles Smith. They did a very fine job with the score.
Apparently that scene was as real as they came because she was in a small room with birds being launched at her out of boxes and she ended up with one of them peck underneath her eye and she recieved a cut under her left eye
Hitch certainly inspires music! I integrate The Birds and a bunch of other Hitchcock classics in my original song "Here's To Alfred Hitchcock," viewable right here on YouTube. Just click on my name below or search "CraigASilver."
ppl who ask questions like why she did not turn and open the door and dismiss this bc to them it is 'fake' , must have a hard time enjoying movies or art, any art.
all art is 'fake' and never real and you can always find absurdities and unrealities in them if you look.

pity the stunted fools for their loss.

but let those poor idiots ask such silly questions, let us enjoy art !
After hearing what Tippi Hedren went through it was rather mean of hitchcock. she says it took a week to shoot this one scene, their was real birds thrown at her. she was not acting she said because she was scared. at the end of the week, she crumpled from exhaustion and cried. was hospitalized afterwards.
Great original score! I remember reading that Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herman got into many matches about when and when not to use music in some of the Hitchcock movies! And most of the time Hitch got what he wanted! ( I know that this movies score was a very elaborate orchestrated sound effects score but I did enjoy hearing it with a musical score! Thanks for all the effort and for posting this! Dave D.
@T0MMY2GUNS: Thanks. I appreciate your kind thoughts. I met Tippi a few years back and she thought I was some kind of nut, but she enjoyed seeing her most-famous scene with an orchestral score.
First i said," Don't twist the knob! DON'T TWIST IT!" she twisted it. "get out of there! GET OUT!" she shuts the door behind her. When will the horror movie characters ever learn?
What a weak ass bitch, imagine that, some birds killing you, what an embarrasing way to die, imagine telling everyone in heaven how you died "oh yeah, some birds killed me" lmao!
Alfred Hitchcock didn't actually even try to use special effects or anything in this scene. As PRACTICE, he would throw birds at her, yes, THROW them at her, and have them attack her repeatedly. One of them JUST missed her eye. Know why? 'Cause Hitchcock liked to torture the female actresses in his movies. Seriously, this screaming etc. was real. Just look it up or something - if you care. Which I assumed you would since you are taking time out of your lives and insulting Tippi Hedren's acting.
worst acting in my life...like you cant scream...they didnt even get her good enough for her to die lol..wow like 20 scratches...ive gotten worse and im not dead ahaha..
@meanoldrunk: Nope I did not. I have a letter from MCA Entertainment that states they do not object to limited "Fair Use" usage of this clip. I had written to the copyright owner (MCA Entertainment) in 1992 asking for permission to use the clip for promotional purposes. This clip has been showed in a number of film music classes and Ms. Hedren was sent a copy of the clip back in 1992. She wrote to me expressing her opinion of the clip. (See the above notes.) Everything is good.
@JoeCoolFreeman Okay come on that's unfair. If she opened the door she'd be letting them into the rest of the house, they could kill the little girl and the old woman besides it's pretty hard to focus on a plan of escape when you're being pelted with birds. If you have to be a smart arse ask why she had to open the bloody door in the first place and just stroll inside.
She's so stupid hahahaha!! so for these scene i heard at the radio station espace music that the birds was real.
