A rare Tom Waits version of the 1965 James Brown soul classic “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag.” . live in 1987 at Massey Hall in Toronto Canada during the “Frank‘s Wild Years” tour. On stage that night are Tom Waits on vocals, piano, bullhorn, Marc Ribot: guitars, banjos, trumpet, Willy Schwarz ( ‘the squeeze) ’Ralph Carney: saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet, marimba, violin, baritone horn, harmonica, Greg Cohen: upright/ electric bass, box electric and Michael Blair on drums & percussion.
I have this tune (PGABNB) from a collection of live stuff on CD that's been around for quite a while. Nice to see it listed on Tom's web site under his videos. However there's a wonderful song he did in the eighties, around the Paradise Alley period. It's called Scarecrow, and has a strong Aaron Copland feel in the piano. It's a perfect, short song, that very few people know about.
This is one awesome performance. And it has, for some reason I'll never understand, propelled my cover of "I hope I don't fall in love with you" to my top song. How did this song ever get 85K views while your others are so small?
Tom Waits posted it on his Facebook page. I was confused about the sudden interest in the video as well for about a day and a half, and then I realized that it was on Tom Waits Facebook page. It's still at the top of it. I feel humbled by it. It's his song, you know. I just uploaded it because it wasn't on Youtube yet, and I knew most people hadn't heard it. Most of the things I upload weren't on Youtube before I posted them. I make sure of it before I post them.
I have some other Tom Waits performances uploaded on my channel. Well, three other ones. They are from a live performance at Lee Furr Studios in Tuscon. He tells stories in two of them and sings afterwords, and in one he reads a Red Sovine poem
There are a few performers I have on a wish list to see live and Tom Waits is in the top five . I would like also see Talking Heads get back together and play a tour.
Wow! Wow! Wow! This has to be one of the best things I've ever heard! Such an obvious person to cover for Tom without me realizing it before! Brilliant! He should do a whole James Brown tribute album :)
Check out my channel. I have all kinds of great music on there. I have 650 songs from top of the line artists in my favorites. It's filled to capacity.

@sullamaca "an ingenius and meniacal reinterpretation"? really? I'm a big fan of Waits too, but that was a pretty faithful to the original version...especially by his standards.
oh my God....never heard this version before...and I'm a BIG Tom Waits fan...agree with muzicsalesman...as good as JB's original....
