This song is the coolest. There are plenty of people today who could learn a bit of prudence and frugality from it. (i.e. Some European countries and the United States government). You can't spend your way out of a debt crisis.
This gentleman and the father were just trying to instill a sense of responsibility and an understanding of basic economics in these brats, instead of letting them squander their tuppence on subsidizing a useless activity like feeding birds. Birds don't need us to feed them! No one owes that old bat a tuppence or her diseased birds a crumb.
lol half way through the song i would start walkin away and they will be like "were r u goin" and im like "to feed the brids and make them fat like u said"
What a wonderful piece of work this is. Mr. Van Dyke, Mr. Tomlinson and of course Mr. R.M. Sherman and Mr. R.B Sherman for the song. There's nothing like this being done anymore which is a shame...and how prophetic the England and Banks reference.
@dglass3090 Yeah, I recall him snatching it back before they run away, because then later Michael offers to give it to his father again after they cause all the trouble.
banks used to be this solid, responsible and prudent. then the 80's came along, reagan & thatcher deregulated everything and naturally banks turned into casinos.
I so HATED the really old guy. Only wants the money for his OWN personal gain you could see it in his eyes at the end, that glint. Ever since i understood what was going on at this segment in the film (which was pretty quick). I would say in my head something like "don't do it Michael". Now i say that as well as try to come up with ways that Michael could say in retort. Marry Poppins is sooo not only for children.
Recently, they were doing a production of the Mary Poppins musical in L.A. and as a speical surprise Dick Van Dyke came out doing this role (despite the fact that the musical doesn't have the character, they wrote him in for this performance). Despite not looking like he did in the movie with all that makeup, he was playing the character at the proper age now. It's kind of cute when you think about it.
Michael knew what's what. I would rather feed the birds than give my money to the banks and lose it all to inflation. A rare instance of Disney teaching the kids a useful life lesson. (Although the old guy's skinny pants are awesome.)

I think when I first watched this as a child I had the same look of confusion as the children. Makes sense now though.

"Think of the foreclosures!" Indeed. Inculcating within children the predatory instinct. The hellish cycle extends itself into perpetuity.

How sad they try to make capitalism look like the bad guy. I would love to invest in sound currency.
