People sometimes note that CD was "past his prime" in his later works, like Jeux and the Etudes. So please explain why both the violin and cello sonatas also belong to the later years. Past his prime, really? If you don't get the music, maybe it's you, not him.
Pierre Boulez found it worth exploring - and worth revisiting. For a fine analysis, search for Hugh Wood's "Staking Out the Territory" Chapter 11 - 'Entering the Last Style'. It's available in pdf online, and fairly demolishes some of the more critical remarks here.

For me, Debussy was already past his best, repetitive and struggling to eliminate. Too much stale cigarette slime, like the old boarding houses used to smell in the 50's.
Pity, I waited years to play this piece, and in the end it wasn't worth it.
@Alexknobsob Beautifully said. Debussy's powers were indeed waning more so in the context that this piece was overshadowed by the monster that was Le Sacre. Still you can't beat the instrumental mastery of 'this piece.
Regarding 'repetitiveness' - it's a hallmark of most impressionist music - Ravel for instance. Debussy's later piano pieces - the etudes - were repetitive. At any rate I still like this piece for its color, bravura, and harmonic nuances. 'too much stale cigarette slime' Nice one.
@MrAkihiros Debussy was my motor during years of professional playing, so now too sick to play myself, I really feel a bit of what Debussy was struggling with since 1908 when the cancer prevented his dignified faecal elimination. What a life!
@Alexknobsob Too much French food for him and too much French music for you! Constipation ala glissando con much pizzicato. At any rate playing his music was not completely a waste of time I think Hope you're feeling better this days.

I've always wanted to dance to this piece. Gorgeous. Mysterious. Inspiring. A perfect ballet piece.

@MrAkihiros It was one of the most impalpable and subtle experiences.
