It's a shame for that poor woman who'll probably feel as if she killed loads of people,, but she was part of a system that wasn't safe enough in the first place. At a place like LAX controllers would be far better off if they worked in pairs who double chech each others work, even if it means paying out for more staff. A computer could be fed with all movement info and should show the possition of every aircraft and give warnings if any are in a dangerous place. How hard would that be to set up?
@Rob187ok The problem with that whole argument is that you're trying to use logic. The people in charge don't run on logic, they run on money, and anything that eats into their profits can't be tolerated.
So what were the crew of the metroliner doing besides waiting for clearance? I am assuming that the tower uses the same frequency for launch as they do for recovery. If so, I wonder why the metroliner crew did not perk up when the ATC gave the 737 permission to land on the same runway they were on? Another sudda, wudda, cudda, I guess.
Stupid air traffic controllers. If the fools on the ground can't see and guide a plane through with whatever means, how the hell pilots can land safely?
@titanic5577 how could they execute a go around when they were so close to the metroliner. even if they tried to, it would have been very difficult as they have to put flaps to takeoff position and full power
@liveevery My grandpa has a Metroliner. 24 years old, hunk of junk, but gets you where you need to go. I agree on your statement about the FAA. I personally think the NTSB should have authority to enforce changes as well as the FAA. The FAA is in bed with the airlines a large part of the time and since NTSB is not responsible for economics, it is a win win scenario. Especially if congress pass laws that forbids economic favors to the NTSB or lose license to operate in the US if caught,
The air traffic controller was lucky that she wasn't killed because of this accident like Peter Nelson who was murdered because he was part of the blame of two planes that hit collided into each other.
Too many things caused this accident. Blaming it entirely on the controller is unfair. In fact they should now think about building another airport nearby to ease congestion.
Im a pilot. The first thing you do before taking off is turning on strobe and landing lights... and have taxi, nav, logo, and beacon on. It was the fault of the skywest pilots and of the traffic controller.
Also, what beats me - is that the metroliner heard that US Air was cleared to land 24L, they didnt alert the plane or the controller that they are on the runway.
@jmsschooner Sorry, I dont agree. Without ground radar, or a view and heavily overworked, you cannot expect a human to keep track of that many flights. She wasnt a robot - and he didnt have any toold to do her job properly. In other words, she was crippled to begin with and its the fault of the FAA. This accident was waiting to happen ... and eventually it did.
@budgerigarz Depends on the production time. In the late 80s/early 90s, the 737-300/400/500 came out with a 'hybrid' steam/glass cockpit. Not fully-glass, but not fully steam-gauges either.
@williepayt01 The aircraft operating USR1493 that night in 1991 was a 737-300. The -800, along with its sister models hadn't been introduced until the late 90s (~1998).

@minooo44 TCAS is only for mid air collison. So if the TCAS responded it might of said GO DOWN and they couldnt cause their on the ground

How Ironic that the ATC controller Robin Wascher, had lost both her parents in a plane crash. R.I.P all the victims.

@liveevery what a pity no sanctions to FAA staff who didnt prevent this accident providing more ATC staff and equipment to LAX

@liveevery are u a pilot too plus i agree she should not be jailed cuz there was so many more planes she needs to settle with too.

@jmsschooner still it was her fault
she should have known the where abouts of skywest
although the skywest plane pilot should have known that there was a plane coming
he would have seen it or heard it

@TheCriticalCanadian It varied on the model. 733's had aalog cockpits, 734's had partial glass, and 735's were available with either.
