If it was a video it had to be in the sixties this version was from the 1930 Paramount sessions. Nobody was really making videos of poor southern black ex-preachers back then, white people were still painting their faces with black makeup and dressing in grass skirts to play 'natives'...
I'm 40 and have been listening to the blues for many many years, but I am embarrassed to admit that I only recently discovered Son House through my best friend, who happened upon him on one of the torrent sites. I don't think I've ever felt the music as much as with Son! So far, "Live at the Gaslight Cafe...Damn!
Son is too cool, as a bluesman and preacher. Sounds like he didn't try to push his beliefs on anyone, the way it should be. I'm a Christian also, but what I call a realistic one. He seemed the same. No reason ya can't be a Christian have a great time and dig music good music.

He is okay? I don't have as many children as he had. LOL In fact I have no Kids. I am a blues lover. I do not hate any blues Music @ all. With the exception of Billie Holiday. I hate her.
Good Googa Mugga. I love this stuff!!! I am Black American who love the blues but I can't find this anywhere but you tube. man I am diggin' this man . I have always know of him but never got into him. 10,000,000 thanks.
Life is only what you make of it. The blessings, or the curses that you find in this world when you come into it, can only force influence on how you choose to deal with this one life that you have. We are at nature's mercy. Then character comes to play. Some fair well.......... others fall by the wayside without a blink of an eye. And still others judge. But the blues, the real blues, well, that is just a significant representation of our humanity......... or is it inhumanity?
stop being so technical.just listen, and figure out how to play your own way.if you figure out how to play this,or any blues song, note for note, good for you,but you will be missing alot.all about the soul, not the following.
Tabs for blues may be bad, but they still are better than trying to get the feel of the song from scratch. I'm trying to learn this song too and I need something to go by. Yeah you have to make the song your own but it really helps to have some substance to work from
I'd say tabs aren't the worst thing ever, I think you just have to get into that style of playing like these Delta Players, I've got the Robert Johnson Book and I've mostly used it to get some kind of Grip on the style, and the open tunings
I apologize if I didn't express it properly, that's all me.
When I say tabs are bad I just meant to avoid trying to replicate these tunes note for note. If you do that you lose the magic of the blues, which was perhaps the most spontaneous and improvisational genre the US has seen.
Just start with the chord progression, keep it simple and experiment.
It's almost always a pre-tuned bar cord like E-Major or (C-Major) / Minor. Then there are relative majors and minors. ( A-Minor) goes with C-Major, and so forth.( Move the slide to the bar frets ) Tune the guitar with a tune fork like in the old days. Use medium gage strings, not light gage. Use an old guitar. Record with one microphone in front.
Yeah, to elaborate on what blaqfather said, tabs for blues songs are bad. To play the blues properly you cannot play a memorized arrangement, it's all about improvisation and feeling. What you bring to a song through your own voice and experience makes the song what it is.
Tune your guitar to an open chord, usually G (DGDGBD), get a slide, and make bar chords. Feel it out and get a groove on. You never have to play it the same way twice.
You're absolutely correct, I apologize, in this case it is indeed tuned to open E. However you can play this song or any song in any key you want, and that's a good way to develop your own strength and confidence as a musician. I think The Good Son would approve.
Tune your guitar DADF#AD, then stick a capo on the second fret, get out your slide, eiher figure it out, or go on to another Video so you can watch him play it, no better way to learn Son House songs than watching the man himself!
Yes Tracy, another Youtube friend of mine turned me on the Son House. This is what makes Youtube so great, we can learn from and enjoy things shared with new friends world wide.
I've loved jazz and blues for nearly 50 years now.
Thanks Jimbo. The video is of a local, falling down black Baptist Church. I thought it was fitting for the Son House music. Glad you enjoyed the vid and thanks for commenting.
An original video? IT WAS RECORDED IN 1930! So if someone has the original video of this song and posts it, I'll sell you the sun for only 10 billion USD (buyer collects).

Tunnning to Open G is no good for this song, this is one of the few where Son was in Open E ;) Otherwise thats all good!

Thanks for posting this, Richard. I'm glad to see you have discovered Son House, the greatest bluesman of all time!
Somewhere I have a cd with a 12-15 minute rendition of Levee Camp Moan, and it's probably the best blues performance I've ever heard.
