A while later staff at Wentworth were informed that there had been a fire at Barnhurst and Bea Smith had died as a result. I guess they figured she wasn't going to come back into the show so they wrote her out completely.

I've got a "greatest shows" type of DVD with 12 shows from the whole series and the last episode is one of them. I thought Bea died in a fire during a riot after she was transferred, but according to Wikipedia, she died DURING the riot as others have noted.

I like the way Minnie Donovan was pictured for just a few seconds. Not just the worst top dog in Prisoner, but the worst character ever in a television programme. It was completely unbelievable that she could rule a prison. Bit like that dog that Homer Simpson voiced for Itchy and Scratchy, really not popular.

Kath Maxwell ends the show as boss cockie. Talking of Smith, I think many people regard her as the best TD purely for sentimental reasons. I found that the character prolonged her stay by well over 100 eps and it was a relief to finally see her shipped off to Barnhurst. I think in retrospect the honour of best TD has to go to Rita Conners for bringing a different dimension to the status and for being a REAL match for The Freak! Lest we not forget, she also masterminded Ferguson's downfall.

Sandy Edwards was killed by Kate (dont remember sir name) she was a doctor inmate. Sandy was going to kill her but kate turned the tables on her and put her in the garbage crusher.Her body was never discovered. However this was not shown on screen but Kate later confessed to this.

It was Kate Peterson, (Olivia Hamnett). I'm not sure whether a confession by Kate actually guarantees her culpability. She appeared to brag that she killed Sandy, but as she was bonkers at the time and there was no body, it's difficult to ascertain whether she did or not! One of the best phases of Prisoner on reflection.

Perhaps she meant to put Kate in the garbage compacter by putting her in the bin just before pickup and then escaping somehow in the confusion of them searching for Kate. The fact Kate was alive and present after Sandy left proves she DID kill Sandy in that garbo truck

You mention proof SharnsiR. I don't think there's ever any proof that Kate actually killed Sandy. She intimates that she may have done the deed during her schizoid rambling state but she is clearly confused between Sandy and Conrad at this point, so even this 'admission' is doubtful. Sandy's so-called murder is NEVER proved - it's merely a suggestion by the dillusional Kate. Sandy may've escaped and given Kate the knife for protection from Marie. It's left to the viewer to interpret the end.

You're right. It was never actually prooved, so I may have used a harsh word there. I think the initial intention was to leave it up to the viewer but the way the characters talk about it around when Kate's ramblings happen seems to me like the writers made some kind of last minute attempt to change the open ended view and suggest Kate did do it. That's just how I took it but it did seem quite strong to me. Kate's ramblings were also pretty convincing to me as it was more plausible than not.

It's a possibility as Louise Le Nay, (Sandy), was pregnant at the time. The writers left the story open-ended in case the actress wanted to return to the show, alas she didn't. It's really difficult to be sure what took place. The final scene involving Kate and Sandy has Kate lifting up a dustbin lid as Sandy bends over - perhaps this was the murder weapon? As Sandy had an escape plan, maybe she got out elsewhere? It would be interesting to get the official verdict after all of these years!

I think Bea Smith was the ultimate top dog, I remember being so in awe of her as a child.

I think Myra Desmond was the most fair top dog and I just loved her, she made mistakes but always with the best of intentions.

Nola McKenzie was strangely likable even though she was evil.

Rita was brilliant and will always be special for toppling the Freak which EVERY other top dog had tried and failed.
