Holy , ----- . Every Song on this Album is better than the last . These Guys were definately clickin on All Cylinders .. I'm in My Fifties and I used to listen to this on Eight Track every day
1 of the greatest songs EVER from 1 of the greatest albums EVER with 1 of the greatest album covers EVER from 1 of the greatest bands EVER....DAM thats a mouthful.
This song always gives me that "Lord Of The Rings" feeling when I Listen to it. Entering the Halls of Mordor and travelling through the Misty Mountains.... Memories of my past lives....
This is absolutely my favorite song off this album! I used to listen to it and others until I memorized every nuance of the song, and each time I listened to it, I'd concentrate on one instrument at a time. Each one was just so essential to the whole song it was just incredible! Such intricate orchestration! Who needs a traditional orchestra with these guys!? These guys are like the Bachs and Beetovens (hmm, something wrong w that spelling) of rock! TY so much for posting! Wish I knew sooner!
@tbollman88 We've been discovering greatly talented local acts & follow truly talented ("famous") artists dedicated to their roots. I hear your pain but I think it's radio/media that's REALLY to blame in letting us down!!!!!! Oh, and ignorance of the common listener.
They were NOT just a studio group. I heard them live in 1972 in Nashville TN. I sat 2 rows from the stage on the floor directly in front of Steve Howe....They were incredible even though they had Alan White on drums instead of Bill Bruford.
When this album came out, (if you look at the album cover, in my mind it says the world is fragile, and we are flying high! superior to all animals on earth!) I didnt have a clue to what the cover meant! They were genius back then!
@Slohands Maybe it's better they don't get so much attention, you know? In this way, the the brilliance and wonder of their music is kept preserved and untainted by pop-culture.
Plus, I also hate when Rush is brought into this. They have their own unique sound and genius and should never be made "at odds" with Yes.
@sponsler Hey man, a lot of the stuff you said to describe the beauty of this band sounds like how I feel about Rush(Caress of Steel is my fave album of all time) You got me really psyched to delve into this band's material. Got any tips for where to start listening??
Zeppelin was great no doubt, but no one can even put a thistle to Yes, the depth of meaning in the lyrics is perpetual and changes with the times. The instrumentation and composition takes many 'listens' to capture with head phones in in some songs...takes a lot of listens to capture the depth of it all..it's a total ear and mind candy extravaganza.
every fifteen seconds of beauty will scoop a sateeite pie out of mysky from thereon, hath i knew you plated that waty with the balanced aliens i hadn't . ask the alien's ant. dressed for the day. warning sea floor for all of eternity. all in the sea. turn the sea over to the sky when you're finished, honey. of course. love , bye. and vice versa
Let's get The Mighty Zep into the Pantheon talk here. For you "buddies who always seem to bring up Led Zeppelin??...There's no point,we know the power of Page,Plant,Jones&Bonham!Yes just iced the cake!Who could keep up with these giants?Unbelievable times.
Listening with head phones on, only. Sorry, you can't listen to the shoes, explosions, and wind without them. If you're not wearing head phones, please pause the recording and get them now. We'll wait . . . . ..
Yes is that once-in-a-lifetime band that can make freezing to death in the Antarctic so badass and sweet at the same time.
This is honestly the closest thing Yes had gotten to pure hard rock. And my God, it's sweet. Then again, "Yes Album" up to "Close to the Edge" are the band's apex in my opinion.
This album pretty much put the entire rockland on notice. Not any kind of bad thing ,just an uptick in music ideas.Yes steered the course to the source. Many of us know this. It's cool to be in my mid 50's!
South Side Of the Sky is so out of place that know one knew it it could happen.See that is what makes these bastards GREAT!Are not we fortunate?Possibly the greatest!!
If you would also like to hear some same era/same talent type stuff try Gong, namely 'Angels Egg' ...'You'... or other Pothead Pixies stuff... I really like it. That band is Gong. Their first three albums are a whole story, as in a concept trilogy. If you decide you like it, get the whole lyrics sheets, as the content makes all the difference to the whole appreciation. PS- Have you met Bob Dobbs..?
This and Heart of the Sunrise are my 2 faves on Fragile. Bill Bruford is phenominal on both tunes. It almost sounds like he is experimenting with different beats and sounds as he goes. It doesn't sound in the pocket at anytime. Very pleasing; at least to my ears. Steve Howe also shines on this. His playing is very articulate and crisp and he sounds very hungry. Rick Wakeman leaves us wonderful memories with his playing as well as Chris Squire and Jon Anderson. Xcellent band!
I'm trying to learn this song now for the 40th anniversary of the "Fragile" album. Imagine the vocal part in the middle if it were done by CSN! Great leads by Howe in the reprise.
'It is my opinion that if the liberties of this country(USA) are destroyed, it will be by the subtlety of the Roman catholic Jesuit priests, for they are the most crafty, dangerous enemies to civil and religous liberty. They have instigated most of the wars of Europe.' Marquis de LaFayette
Ever here the story .Jimi at the Marquee walked into Chris's dressing room and pleaded for him to replace Redding.Squire said "no" Thank You Chris!History would have been altered . There would not have been YES.
steve howe is one of the best guys to ever pick up a geetar. i just love how his classical/country-influenced style manifests itself within his little sporadic riffs that go all over the fretboard. i just love that style.
Fragile is the album which at fifteen years old accompanied me into the world of psychedelic drugs, along with Dark Side of the Moon. On first hearing Yes, I was uncertain of Jon Andersen's gender, but I knew those lush, overdubbed vocals practically put me into a trance. I quickly bought up their previous releases, and awaited the release of Close to the Edge. I have seen the band live, with various line-ups, including the Drama tour.
It's funny because when I play this to my my friends they all have weird looks on their faces and they want me to play something else. I simply say no and that they should appreciate good music. Oh yeah did I mention I'm 13! I love my dad for showing me Yes!
@MrBobHand Wow good for you at such a young age! My dad used to sing in a band in the 70s and they covered some Yes songs as well as a bunch of other great stuff. They had a reunion concert when i was 16 and they played Roundabout. I told him I liked it and he said listen to Fragile. I was hooked since then! And yes I've gotten many of the exact same looks, it's totally normal! If it's not Katie Perry or Fitty Cent they don't wanna hear it. But Yes actually contains depth, keep listening!
Alan White has been YES'S drummer since 1973. Jon Anderson has been the lead singer and main lyric writer on all but 2 YES albums. If he ever said to pay no attention to the lyrics, he was kidding.
I once heard that YES singer Alan White said in response to an interview query concerning the content of their lyrics...something to the effect of "...pay no attantion to our words, they mean nothing...ignore them."
@gracealone420 I never care much for lyrics, they only add to my overall enjoyment of a song. I love lyrics that I can sing along to and whatever but I don't listen to lyrics too much when I hear a song for the first time. I'm all about the melody, the sounds or the passion that I can feel in the vocals.
you should have seen them live in'73 !!!!!! MAN....Blown Away!!! the"Greatest"live show I ever saw,and I've seen 'em since'70. you have to appriciate the musicians!!
@n64wilbert Actually, Yes never really wrote a composition, per se. During the recording process, the songs' structures were indeterminate; for exemplification: the timing of the recurrence of certain themes, where the song would refer back to itself, rather than being a totally random and atonal peice of shit, was not decided by the band members. It was their producer. They could perform a song live correctly until their producer had already mixed their miscellaneous 'jams'.
I saw Yes at least 70 times since the Close to the Edge tour. Seen in "Galic Park in the Bronx when I was about 12. I just started writing song recently... Started a band... Check us out... Harpers Ferry Raiders - Remember... the world turns easier on an axis of love!
You see, I'm only 13, living in this world full of terrible cheesy pop music. And while everybody within a 12 mile radius of me is playing the new JB single on their ipod or something, I take out my dad's old walkman and pop this tape in. It's the best sensation in the world when someone asks you what you're listening to, you tell them, they have no clue what you're talking about. So they ask to sample this. The look on their face is the best ever.
As classical pianist, I got most of my inspiration from Rick Wakeman...still trying to use ALL my fingers like him!! love to be at their 40 th anniversary concert. I was only 17 when I heard this for the first time.Undeniably immortal music!
@ubertrooper6300 No, they were not. Ian was born in Scotland, but grew up in Blackpool. The 1971- '75 line-up (with Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play, War Child and Minstrel in The Gallery) were all Blackpool guys with the exeption of Martin Barre, who is from Birmingham. All English, dear. :-)
@Innerspace100 Yeah, thanks for this, I actually found out that it was true a while ago, and I effectively realized that I've been horribly misled my whole life...o_O
@Sam24 You forgot King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis (before Gabriel left), The Groundhogs and Deep Purple (the original mk II era). Oh, and Led Zeppelin.
@1803fe "The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monsterous he cannot believe it exists."-J. Edgar Hoover
"We shall have World Government whether or not you like it, by conquest or consent."-James Warburg(Council on Foreign Relations)
"No one will enter the New World Order unless he or she will make a pledge to worship Lucifer. No one will enter the new age unless he will take a Luciferian initiation."-David Spangler(United Nations)
@1803fe 'I do not like the reappearance of The Jesuits ... If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in hell, it is this society of Loyola's. Nevertheless, we are compelled by our system of religous toleration to offer them an asylum.' John Adams, 2nd President of the U.S.A
This Album--Fragile--should be listened to from beginning to end...many times !
Audio level is set at HIGH for me...album plays well at any level !!!

In fact, they could never really perform South Side of the Sky to their liking.
TheBPSEnsemble 7 months ago
@n64wilbert Actually, Yes never really wrote a composition, per se. During the recording process, the songs' structures were indeterminate; for exemplification: the timing of the recurrence of certain themes, where the song would refer back to itself, rather than being a totally random and atonal peice of shit, was not decided by the band members. It was their producer. They could perform a song live correctly until their producer had already mixed their miscellaneous 'jams'.

Master vocals and musicianship:
Heavenly, precision choral Vocals and Harmonies
Aggressive, electrically tasered Guitar runs
Stormy, haunting classical Keyboards
Perky, sophisticated, syncopated Percussion
and...Ohhhhhh That crunchy, belching Bass!
Gotta B YES!!!!!!

@ubertrooper6300 You are wrong. Where did you get that idea from? Irish? Since when?
TheNameThatCouldNotB 5 months ago
@TheNameThatCouldNotB Oh, man, you're right...I've been misled my whole life...o_O
ubertrooper6300 5 months ago
@ubertrooper6300 No, they were not. Ian was born in Scotland, but grew up in Blackpool. The 1971- '75 line-up (with Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play, War Child and Minstrel in The Gallery) were all Blackpool guys with the exeption of Martin Barre, who is from Birmingham. All English, dear. :-)
Innerspace100 4 months ago
@Innerspace100 Yeah, thanks for this, I actually found out that it was true a while ago, and I effectively realized that I've been horribly misled my whole life...o_O
