Thats a cool little MacMini you built. Instead of IDE wouldnt it be easier to go with SATA? What were the problems installed? Why wouldnt you install an easy beginners GNU/Linux distro like Ubuntu or Mint with restricted extras for you grandma? I like your vid its fun.

Loose the IDE. You need SATA DVD and SATA HD. I see the vid was posted in 09, so I assume you were grabbing scrap parts rather than buying new in store - because the salesman should direct you automatically to buy SATA stuff.

Funny, he was so adamant on using his IDE HD that he went out and bought a 40 dollar adapter. Too bad no one told him at the store that for 10 dollars more, he could just buy a new SATA that would work and probably double his storage and boost HD speed. Live and learn.

As much as i found this quite interesting i have to say, I admire you for putting up with this bad looking computer i would never be able to to concentrate. I'm sure this was all a "fun challenge" though.

Mac experience is also having a simple, beautiful quality built with the ease/smart of us and reliable OS, if goes hand and hand other wise, is far from being the same.

The cost of this machine is about a third (yes 1/3) of a mac mini.

Use iatkos v5i for a very easy install.

If you need more graphics power, pick up a nvidia GeForce 5200/5600/6200 pci card. Use Natit or Macvidia drivers.

That case (Apex MI-100) has room for 3 drives. I run windows off one drive, OSx on the sata. If you are using an ide hdd and dvd make sure you make one drive master and one a slave..

The chipset fan on the board sucks. Invest $8 and install a Scythe Mini Kaze !

Apple claims their hardware works with mac os like nothing else because they design the software and hardware 2 b nail and finger. If nothing else in this universe works like a mac with its own OS, so whats the problem in allow people to buy mac os and install it in a clone? , Apple computers let the mac os work like GODS COMPUTER, so Apple dont be afriad, JUST LET EVERYBODY buy your OS and let people by their selfs make judments. Mostly I went with the Atom because of the price. (Cheap.) This was meant to be a fun/cheap experiment.

I've been using the latest version of the Boxee media player and it handles 720p well now. My TV isn't 1080p anyways.

So for now I'm happy. At least until I can get my hands one one of those Nvidia Ion setups. I hope a manufacturer starts making them soon.

1) Why an Atom processor for a desktop computer? Atoms are for netbooks.

2) I have an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ with 2GB of RAM and Kalyway 10.5.2 Leopard works just fine, everything works, watch me video you'll see.

Hi, great video. I've expected low performance of the integrated intel graphic media accelerator (GMA). So, what do you think about an ATi HD2400pro or a NVIDIA 8400GS that is available for PCI bus? It should handle at least 1080p videos.

No this is a little too slow for Final Cut. I'd shell out another couple hundred and get something with a Core 2 Duo, maybe 4 Gigs of RAM. That's doable.
