  • There are 'Josie's' in every village,town,city..People who, through no fault of their own, life has passed by.They inavriably end up single, doing "menial" work, often living alone..characters as they may be patronisingly called. These are our fellow human beings.often far more intelligent and sensitive than many people in mainstream life. And it is our duty as humans to encourage them, help them, respect them and not overlook them.Thats what life is about

  • great film. had never heard of it, it was on rte and just sat down watching it and got sucked in. not an action film or anything so if you need to be actively entertained don't bother, you won't get it. coming from a small town in ireland it really made sense to me, there are people like this all over the place, all over the world i suppose. beautiful film and pat short surprised me!

  • my uncle directed this:D

  • I only watched it aswell, felt sorry for him at the end, such a nice and innocent guy that he is.

  • I have just watched the film now and what started out as a film about a sound man which was lighthearted and funny at times, ended up being very sad and heartbreaking Josie gets into trouble for showing his young friend an explicit video to him, but he did not mean any harm as he is very innocent,he is told to stay away from him and the town. With no friends and no love or care from anyone, he commits suicide by drowning himself. The horse which was his only friend left in the world is seen at t

  • just watching it now a sad film indeed reminds me of a sad period of my own life where i done the same thing but i done it in to shallow a river to be lonly is a horrible thing indeed so sad it made me cry and reminded me of my experience

  • @graham640 However u are still alive and I hope, have come through that part of your life. Many people feel like that at times, its not a sign of weakness.Fair play to u for being able to say it here and never be afraid to reach out to others for help.Peace graham

  • can someone explain the ending? i watched it but missed the last few mins -_-

  • @dageezerboi i want this too, he goes into the water..and the horse, what's with the horse ?

  • is this meant to be a scary vid because from what i have heard all my friends say its SCARY SHIT :/ ?????

  • Superb movie, cannot remember seeing much better tbh, personally i think it helps a film when you arent familiar with most of the cast.

  • dennynua, learn how to bloody write.

  • I want to see this movie SOOOOOOOOOO BAD. I am in America and its not available here. This is bullshit.

  • i love this movie 100% Pat Shortt is awesome

  • it does some up Ireland if you don't have the lingo or talk alot bullshit bout man u or somtin cudn't give 2 shits bout it or are kinda of quiet which i am they look at ye like ye have two heads then theres the drinkin all the fuckin time at 24 im fuckin sick of it can nearly predict every night thats why i want to see the world or il end up like poor josie

  • was this produced by FOX?

  • I read someone asked below "Did Josie die and come back as a horse?!!!" NO that didnt happen.Josie died,by suicide, the horse represents freedom.Josie was a man left behind by the celtic tiger, misunderstood, such lost souls live all around us.Therefore love thy neighbour people. What a film

  • I think this is the finest irish film I've seen in a long time.

To answer some other comments I read below..Yes it IS irish (not english) but please dont turn this thread into a debate on anglo-irish relations!

I believe it was filmed in county Offaly.

It was written by Mark O'Halloran,an irishactor, writer and directed by Lenny Abrahmson.Casting was by Amy Rowan. The star of the film is Pat Shortt, well known irish comedian, actor and british born, irish descent Anne Marie Duff.

  • thanks for ruining the film maxwell you tart.

  • It looks like Lough Mask in County Mayo, I believe. Can someone please explain the ending? Did Josie commit suicide and come back as the horse? Lost in translation I guess.

  • guinness02122: I believe Josie does commit suicide - he does not come back as the horse. At the end, the horse, which was previously locked in a gated pasture or chained, is now free. Josie, by killing himself, is also now also free.

  • @maxwelljames44 thanx for ruining the fuckin film.

  • Hashpotato: Dude, I didn't ruin the film. I am educated and the ending is obvious. Spend a little more time on your homework, learn words other than "fuck", and you will be able to solve easy problems someday.

  • @maxwelljames44 so it encourages suicide?

  • The guy who plays david gos to my school nd i luk like he did in this movie acordin to him

  • Comment removed

  • The ending remember me Mouchette by Bresson.

  • It's an Irish movie chuckdizzle420 not UK, keep your ears open in Geography class a bit more.

  • what are you the geographical enforcer ?

or do you just scour youtube for peoples mistakes to correct them your an asshole

i had nothing bad to say about the film

    but your just a dick

    so thanks you gomer

  • Hit a nerve have i chunkdizzle420?

You really shouldn't really name call when your wrong, it just highlights a complete lack of any brains.

I suggest your return to school and listen more to the geographical and English enforcer. It would be no harm while your at it to have a meeting with the school counselor enforcer while your at it.

  • asked you to fuck off have i padi89 ?

    yea actually you have

i cant stand arseholes like you that assume there smarter than everyone and correct people on the tiniest of errors your a dick dude

you probably dont have any friends acting like a fucking snob do you ?

  • Telling someone to fuck off on the internet is about as pointless as an ashtray on a motorbike.

"the tiniest of errors" Did you even watch this film? How you even believed you were watching a UK movie is laughable. The director and writer are Irish, majority of the cast are Irish, the whole movie is set in and has a very strong rural Ireland tone.

No friends ? Again laughable and childish, i have plenty of friends but thankfully few stupid ones.

  • chunkdizzle420,

While your comment was complimentary towards the film, it's understandable people would get annoyed when you say Garage is from the UK. You see, Ireland and Britain had a very tumultuous relationship for many centuries, and Ireland was seen as merely a geographical fragment of Britain against the wishes of almost all the people in Ireland. It finally broke out of the UK in 1921 after a bitter war of independence. People in Ireland do not want to be seen as being part of the UK.

  • @padraic2001eire

Correct and right! Ireland and great britain are totally separate entities!

  • how the hell can I watch this movie? I watched it on IFC once but they never replayed it. And the sellers only have it in PAL format. Netflix doesn't have it and neither do any rental places

  • Great film... great ending!

  • she was dunne from way back

  • I was really enjoying this film till it got to the end. What the hell sort of ending is that???

i was hoping josie would get the courage to pack his bags & finally leave that shithole.

Still better than the current hollywood fake-ass bullshit we're bombarded with.

  • yeah its the same with the film kisses!! same directer and the ending was shit!! the whole movie was great but the ending wasnt

  • I got this dvd yesterday in tesco.

its a good movie, sad at the end though

  • "Garage" is a gem of a film. Pat Shortt was brilliant. I recently saw the Irish film "Eden". Both sad, emotional movies with great acting.

  • the film was brilliant and extremely sad...anyone can suggest me some good irish movis?

  • No, but if you liked this, check out the 1995 movie "Heavy" by James Mangold, very touching...

  • I agree with Triumph1050cc's suggestion. You could say Heavy is in the same palette of color. see it.

  • the ending really ripped me open. what a great movie & josie is the man.

  • You are a nobody, and they can't take that away from you.

  • Scintillating comeback slackjaw, you really are just a fucking dunce. Learn to spell you cretinous dolt. What a pathetic pest you are, a living joke.

  • It's because you're a cunt.

  • I'm french, and it's for me a beautiful movie, Pat Shortt is really great. The end of the movie is just... triste et désespérément belle.

  • aye, canny sad film like, im nto even ashamed to say i cried like i middle aged woman during her menstral cycle

  • outstanding movie, seen it twice and cried both times :-(

  • Go on conor:)

  • bloody friends what can you do

  • the best film to come out of ireland

  • Saw this film on DVD last night. Its amazing.

  • I got a copy of Adam and Paul a couple of years ago, never having heard of it (I'm Scottish) and loved it to bits. This looks great and I'll definitely need to get my hands on it.

  • If you're still based in Scotland, you should be able to pick up a copy of Garage easily enough. The DVD has just been released across the UK.

  • Cheers emmet. I've already told my mate (who still has my copy of Adam and Paul!) about the movie and we'll def get a hold of it some time.

  • who composed the music for this film

    cause its absolutely brilliant

  • The very talented Stephen Rennicks did the soundtrack. Stephen also did the music on Adam & Paul.

  • thanks for the info

    it is very gripping music!

it brings the emotion of the film to a climax at the end!

adam and paul had great music aswell and is yet another classic irish film

    :) :)

  • Did you check out Prosperity? I'm fairly sure that was his too. Great TV show, certainly some of the episodes were fantastic. It features some of the incidental characters from Adam & Paul.

  • yes prosperity was brilliant aswell

mark o halloran sure knows how to write good material about ireland

he sure hit the nail in all 3

    prosperity,adam and paul and garage

the creators are very talented people

    :) :)

  • Looks very good, hope to catch it soon.

  • is Ireland really like that in the movie?

  • I don't know if it would be the right thing to say what Ireland is really like,

as in, one youtuber's opinion might differ from the greater reality. But, saying that, it feels closer to the truth then any other irish film i've seen.

  • there are people like this in ireland

    no lie

i know a gud few i won't mention names but this is reality in ireland

  • some small towns are. such depressing places.

  • I agree.

same can be said for some big cities.

  • I lived in rural Ireland growing up and there are people and situations like this! This film really highlights the scourge of loneliness!

  • captures the real ireland better than any movie before it, a wonderful film.

  • Well only the more rooooral rural areas really

  • ive watched the movie last month.. and i love it very much!

  • I saw this tonight at the London Film Festival. I think it's one of the best films I've ever seen. Pat Shortt gives an amazing performance as the quiet, kind-hearted Josie. A truly heartbreaking film. I hope that lots of people will go and see it. Congratulations to everyone involved.

  • the most powerfull movie ever made

  • Eh.. no, have you not seen any other movies?

  • A fantastic film. A great performance by Pat Shortt. Lenny Abrahamson is the future of Irish cinema.

  • ARG!! PATT SHORTT. sorry...!! Hope he reads this but stops as soon as he gets to his name!! aww..

  • I saw this at the toronto film festival.. it was a lovely film! It seemed everytime anyone was kind to the main character it was as though they thought their was something wrong with themselves for being empathetic.. Whatever award that is the equivalent to the Oscars in the U.K .. well Paul Shortt should be nominated for best actor..He was outstanding!
