I was in field artillery and I have to say that the 81 mm morter that he used is a glorified firecraker and the damage it does against building is extremely small (compared to the gun I was on). In other words if the morter he fired into the town hit a building it would do no more than make a small hole in the roof. If it laned in the street, it would suck to be in the street, but the people in the houses would be safe.

I was in field artillery and I have to say that the 81 mm morter that he used is a glorified firecraker and the damage it does against building is extremely small (compared to the gun I was on). In other words if the morter he fired into the town hit a building it would do no more than make a small hole in the roof. If it laned in the street, it would suck to be in the street, but the people in the houses would be safe.

I read an article by an Army officer in the British Army Review that analysed questions of escalation and degrees of force used by US troops in Iraq. His conclusion was that compared with UK troops, the US was much more likely to open fire early and much more likely to escalate to heavier weapons early on. US forces are viewed by their allies as lacking a sense of restraint or proportion in terms of when and how they lay down fire. This is what these video testimonies are about, I think.

Well, I think that people who comment on what makes a good soldier and what makes a bad soldier are often talking our of their arses. A good soldier in modern times should have the awareness, discipline and moral fibre to avoid unnecessary casualties in the pursuit of his objective.Officers and NCOs have the repsonsiblity of making sure soldiers are not killing civilians at random. And any military system than can't make that part of the core ethos of each unit is basically very unprofessional.

Okay, sometimes you have to distinguish between war-fighting and peace-keeping. You have to shift up and down in degrees of aggression, according to the situation. Some places like Northern Ireland were mostly about policing. You couldn't drop 500 pound bombs there. They were UK citizens in those houses after all. And other places like Bosnia and Cyprus too. So being able to change gear in terms of weaponry and aggression is essential if you want to be successful in counter-insurgency. Right?

However, I will continue to call on my leaders and leadership to bring me and my fellow servicemembers home.
