I live right next to Daytona Beach FL, right on the beach and my family decided to ride it out at home. One of the coolest experiences ever, especially being so close to the beach.
Ah, I lived through Charley,Francis,Rita,Fay,and all the hurricanes that struck FL. I still live in the same house That went through the 2005-2010 Hurricanes and Tropical Storms!
mmmmmmm good old charley! he sure did some damage! i remember standing out under the carport and pretty much leaning sideways into the wind so it wouldnt knock me over! shit flyn everywhere and trees gettin pulled up by the roots! it was definitely entertaining for a couple of hours! not so fun being out of power and gas and food and water for almost a week and a half! GREAT VIDEO THO 5 STARS
That was sick, dude!! Being in Charley was like being in an EF4 tornado. If Hurricane Ike would have hit Houston with winds this intense, just imagine how the potential damage would have compared to New Orleans after Katrina!!
I located the gas station on Google Maps and it's only 300 feet from the bay. How did you not get 15 to 20 feet of water washing around you? Didn't you think of going any farther inland?
@triton115 i live there and went through charley the storm can from the southward direction and was too fast for storm surge thank the lord or i would be homeless or worse dead, with anywhere between 25 to 30 feet of storm surge when my house sits at 8 feet
This is the single best video of eye wall footage i have seen in my Storm chasing career. Could also be some of the highest wind gusts ever recorded on daylight video....160-185mph gusts??
I lived on Easy street which is off US41. Our whole house was destroyed. Never imagined losing everything except for my life all in one day. Charley was suppose to hit Tampa. Charlotte High looks so nice now!
@TheBeastFrom941 That was definitely hit hard, I was there too, I was lucky roof held up, my buddy wasn't so fortunate helped him tear it all out and start over. He only made a down payment for his insurance and house and then Charlie hit, finally someone gets the insurance company. The whole landscape and skyline was forever changed.
i had no power for 9 days and the roof almost came off but there was a bird that hung on to our fence for deer lief throughout the whole storm when the storm was over it flew away
i was in lakeland at the time and i was scared and it was the worst night of my life so far until a little bit of ike, francis, jane and one more i cant remember hit. when the eye went over everything was quiet and all of a sudden someone in our house said,"are we dead?" i'm sure they were joking.
I remember my mom, for some random reason, parked 15 feet away from her original parking spot, and a tree fell right in her normal spot, was crazy, Fuck you Charley, you killed my plant man.
that is some crazy shit right there!! I was in hurricane charley too..central florida. by the time it got to us it was 100 mph but dont underestimate that. it did alot of damage. We had no power for 9 days!! Imagine that in florida summer heat.
Ive lived in Florida my whole life and been through more than 10 hurricanes,Charley was by far the worst I've been through.(live in central Florida and was 4 years old when Andrew hit so don't remember it much)
that hurricane was soo huge it covered the whole state of florida and i was in that storm visting my grandparents and all i can remember is that my mom and dad didn't come back for 2 days because the were flooded in
me and my family moved down from new york to florida so hurricane charlie was the first hurricane i had ever seen...and when it was happening my dad took a chair, opened the door, and sat there looking at the storm lol
it was kinda cool but then after it was over we went outside and part of the neighbors roof was missing, and a whole lot of crap got knocked into our pool it was bad.
August 13th is my birthday - I was staying at the Plaza Suites on International Drive, Orlando with my hubby and 3 kids - What a day and night!!! a birthday to remember!!
My family and I were staying at the Ramada in Kissimee when Charley hit. It was the most frightening thing I have ever experienced. It knocked the end of the hotel out and moved cars and trees around the car park like chess pieces. We were due to fly home the next day but got stuck for four days until the airport opened again.
As a resident of Port Charlotte, I still cant believe we stayed in our house while that was going on outside. Our roof eventually collapsed and all our windows shattered among other things. 08/13/2004, A day I will never forget. Thanks for the video
If the NHC upgraded Charley to a cat. 5 sometime down the road I wouldnt be very surprised. Right now its a 150 mph cat. 4, so it would only require a 5 mph increase to bump it up.
Wikipedia: (Hurricane Charley was the second major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season.) (...peaking as a 150 mph (240 km/h) Category 4 hurricane. The hurricane made landfall in southwestern Florida at peak intensity, the strongest hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew) (Unofficially, the Charlotte County Medical Center recorded a peak wind gust of 172 mph (277 km/h).)
Winds at the end of the video were probably near 170.
@megamadnezz hi, can you tell me the strongest hurricane that ever hit the US,and its peak wind in km/h. i live in Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and the strongest cyclone that hit our island had peak winds of 280 km/h officially recorded.
hard to imagine stronger winds than that. i would think that if you stood out in that you'd get blown down the street. well thats as close as i ever wanna get to something like that!
That was absolutely crazy. If Charley was a Cat. 4 and seeing the destruction on this video, I can't imagine a Cat.5! Nature at its worst right there!

This hurricane happened 6 years ago yesterday (8/13/10). Ironically enough, yesterday was Friday the 13th, as was the day Charley hit.

amazing that palm trees brace hurricanes better than structures. they're like lil titans made to ride out the storms and grow coconuts

Right around 1:07 in, you probably got sustained winds of 140-150 mph with a gust over Category Five. Very extreme hurricane, in Charley.
