One of the saddest breakup songs ever written or recorded. Simon is a master of economy: "The sting of reason/the splash of tears/the northern and the southern hemispheres/love emerges and it disappears." Too true, but who has ever said it better or more succinctly?
When I was 16 I tried to write the next great American tragic love story while listening to this song. Late into each night during the summer of 1986 I pecked away at my typewriter, pouring out onto paper all that raw teenage emotion. The story turned out pretty lame, but this song remains a beautiful and inspiring composition. Hearing it now almost makes me want to attempt that story again.
i think i can describe this song as a very rare, beautiful flower :)

This song seems to reflect on Paul Simon's lovelife.

Such a melancholy, depressing sounding song, but beautiful at the same time. Brings back tons of good ol' 70s AM radio memories:)

Crazy, but I remember being 3 yrs. old,
1978 & living on the west side of Chicago
hearing my mom play this song over and over!
I actually re-discovered this tune when I was 12.
Yes I know, I was waaaay ahead of my time!
One of my favorite Simon tunes.
