Roosevelt Franklin was set up by the man... last seen in 73' he was racially profiled and lost his job on Sesame street... now he's been seen disrupting White Women receiving music awards and even stating the President hates muppets....
He was a true star. So much more "real" than Elmo ever was. I miss him horribly. I guess if they brought him back, they wouldn't let him be the Roosevelt we love, which $%^& sucks ass.
LOVED Roosevelt Franklin! As a little white chick in Colorado, Sesame Street was just about my only exposure to other cultures! THANK GOODNESS FOR JIM HENSON AND CHILDREN'S TELEVISION WORKSHOP! xoxoxoxo
Yes good call. That is Holly's dad Matt Robinson the original Gordon. Matt sadly passed away a few years ago from Parkinson's. He was a Philadelphia native. To my generation the 1st viewers of the 69 70 time period he's our Gordon mutton chops and all.
such a positive characterization before it all got blown away by "sensitivity". In 1970 people told it like it was...and on this project the right minds were in charge.
I actually have the album "The Year of Roosevelt Franklin". It was my brothers album before it became mine. Doubt if it plays well anymore but what great memories. Thanks for posting.
True, but in white-dominated American/western culture, the message had always been that white is beautiful, black isn't. The song was written only a few years after the civil rights movement. The media is still dominated by images of white beauty.
Also, I will never understand why they got rid of Roosevelt Franklin..he was SOOO koo...and we really didn't get another major "ethnic" Muppet till Rosita *a monster at that*
Well, they couldn't really bring him back now, because the character belongs to another era. The Funk Era, the pre-hiphop age. The way he talks and the "kind" of cool he represents would be totally alien to kids now.
It says on wiki that Mr Hooper died of a heart attack in 1982. It also says he was blacklisted for years by the McCarthy witch-hunts for being a Communist. How paranoid is that. He was a great character.
I love it! +

@parkercadie1
Roosevelt was taken off the show because there was rumour that he was being stereotypical to the African-American population.

yeh that is true. I am just trying to put it into perspective. I am white and I think black women are the most beautiful on the planet.

Marbles471 3 years ago 2
That's true. They'd have to create an updated hip-hop version. Some of the Roosevelt Franklin sketches sounded alot like early rap though.
oclandestin 3 years ago
If old Roosevelt DID come back as an evolved-with the times li'l hiphop kid, they'd better leave his yellow striped shirt alone. XD
Marbles471 3 years ago 3
lol. Was that shirt ever in fashion? ; )
