Thankfully TnT Isn't a true solid block. It's pretty much identical to the old sand trick where you'd stick yourself at an angle inside falling sand.

While it doesn't give you were the stronghold is, It really does help in finding it if you are prone to killing yourself in lava lakes like myself :P

A better alternative for the TNT would be Glowstone, since it is a transparent block (doesn't suffocate you, just like the TNT didn't) and it doesn't kill you if you screw up :D
